Working as a software engineer using C, C++, Python, Scheme on simulation and optimization tools and applications in the meterology/satellite data processing/atmospheric sciences domain. I'm fond of the Lisp family of languages, and am currently working on Scheme-bindings for our modeling, simulation, and analysis tools.

metaobject··on The Impact of Listening to Music on Cognitive Performance (2013)
Here's one more data point:

I enjoy a full range of musical genres and I typically go in cycles. I'll go for a week or two on trance/progressive (A State of Trance Episodes 300-450). Then I might switch to technical death metal for a bit. Even though they typically sing in English, it turns out that the lyrical content of this type of music is hardly discernable. I also happen to enjoy a lot of punk and hardcore music. I find that if I already know the words to the music, then sometimes it's not as distracting as other lyrically-heavy genres.

Also, I'd suggest investing a pair of good over-the-ear headphones (if you can tolerate them) or at least a pair of good in-ear earphones. You might also consider an amplifier as well. With my iPod classic, an amp, and my Beyerdynamic DT-770s, the music sounds so damn good. The seal on my ears is so tight that I'm basically isolated from my environment.

metaobject··on The worst distractions are the ones we love
I've noticed this as well. From a software perspective, even while working on an extended task that I mostly enjoy, if I'm presented with a novel, seemingly short task I usually have no trouble at all getting motivated and switching gears so I can figure it out and get the quick win. I wonder if it's the anticipation of a quick, clean solution that my brain's reward system desperstely needs?

I just wonder what it'd be like to be unable to take your work home with you. Writing software allows me to do my job from wherever I want/need. Oftentimes that ends up being in my bed or at my desk late a night because I fucked around too much during the day.

metaobject··on CPU Usage Differences After Applying Meltdown Patch at Epic Games
I’d go farther, anybody who is concerned with application performance may soon see/smell their hair smoldering.

We write a lot of code that needs to run as fast as possible (processing, post-processing, generating real-time weather/satellite data) and I’m concerned about time windows and whether we’ll be able to meet requirements.

Yeah, but you better define some stopping criteria or else you'll end up with a PhD if you're not careful.

Why would you want to do that? Are you running on a severely memory-restricted machine?
metaobject··on Parents now spend twice as much time with their children as 50 years ago
At least the older one is being productive and producing content. Hey, there are some silly YouTubers who make real money from just streaming their life (games, fashion, etc).

Arguably, what they’re doing is better than sitting in front of a passive device like a TV. Sure, they could be spending their time more wisely, but the kids need some sort of down time (exactly how much time is for the parents to figure out).

metaobject··on Parents now spend twice as much time with their children as 50 years ago
Looking back, what about now? Overall, are you happy with the amount of time you did spend with your parents?
metaobject··on Carp, a compiled Lisp with type inference and a borrow checker
Perhaps it's my OCD, but a Lisp with uppercase namespaces, etc. just rubs me the wrong way.
metaobject··on Carp, a compiled Lisp with type inference and a borrow checker
> The selling point of lisp is macros, and macros alone.

That's a fairly bold claim.

Bigloo has a special place in my heart. I spent a few years building scheme bindings to various C graphics and networking libraries. I can't quite put my finger on it, but I found it very enjoyable. Getting C-like performance from scheme is just wonderful.

One of my all time favorite games, without a doubt. I used to play it on the Atari 800XL, but it had a different name, I believe. "Behind Jaggi Lines", I want to say.

Edit: fixed game name

metaobject··on Ellen Ullman on the importance of making algorithms accessible to the public
Obsolete or not, I'd hope it remains in the collection of sorting algorithms tht are presented to students in undergraduate algorithms course. It's instructive to compare and contrast the strengths and weaknesses of these various approaches.
metaobject··on Ellen Ullman on the importance of making algorithms accessible to the public
Hogwash. If your CS program isn't teaching the general fundamentals (algorithms, data structures, basic machine architecture, compiler theory, etc) that's unfortunate. But a CS degree isn't a 4 year equivalent of a programming certificate.

metaobject··on Building A.I. That Can Build A.I
Let's say you have a system running some sort of RAID such that the remaining, online disks are all critical (meaning if any additional disks fail, you lose all your data). I can imagine a scenario where the system has some way of predicting whether one of the remaining disks are close to failure. If the system believes that one of the disks is close to failing, then I could see if refusing to perform some very I/O intensive task until the system health is restored (allowing for a manual-override, of course).
metaobject··on Seven habits of effective text editing (2000)
Btw, the answer is "spaces" because tabs can be interpreted differently from editor to editor.

To take it a step further, its 4-space indents. I've seen code where people pull off 2-spaces, but it gets crowded failrly quickly.

metaobject··on Seven habits of effective text editing (2000)
Going with your theory, I'd say that pointing devices are more precise which means they require more brain-CPU cycles to operate ... pixel-space is large and you must position it within some delta of the target widget you're trying to use.

Whereas in emacs, say, it's a quick "C-x o" to change to the next/other buffer.

metaobject··on Cognitive Biases in Programming
Assuming f1() has side effects, those two blocks of code may be very different.
metaobject··on Why I have no favorite programming language
Perhaps it seems superficial, but one of the reasons I don't like PowerShell is because the language is ugly.

There is something about using capital letters for commands that really bothers me. It may be an OCD thing, bc I use lower-case snake_case for all variable/class names in Lisp, C, C++, and Python.

I don't usually do any work on Windows, but when something came up where some scripting had to be done, I just installed the Cygwin and was done with it.

Of course users don't really care about the design principles used to organize source code. They care about features. The design principles are a concern for the developers, and if some standard isn't obeyed, then the users may not get those new, stable features they're craving.

I've had those popups numerous times and it makes me irrationally angry. Why does an ad get to dictate how I hold my device?
metaobject··on Scrolling your website past the iPhone X’s notch
I exclusively use landscape mode due to vision problems. In landscape mode, I can zoom the text a little more and still read the text semi-comfortably without having to horizontally scroll as much as I would in vertical mode.

I know exactly what you mean re: the bars and borders which obscure text, etc in landscape mode. If it gets too bad, I just leave the page.

I was wondering about the spatial variability of radon gas emissions. Is it possible/likely for one house to report normal levels while an adjacent house might report high/significant levels?

In other words, if your neighbor gets a test and finds acceptable levels, would it still be a good idea to get a test/monitor for your house?
