metalgearsolid··on How Slack Harms Projects
The author works for bad management. I once related to all these pain points too.

On the other hand I don't think its fair to blame the author for their self-discipline or whatever. When a QA engineer tags you and your manager on Slack to raise an "extremely urgent" issue, I really cannot predict how my teammates and managers will perceive me if I just ignore these fire alarms, regardless of how real or not the urgency is.

metalgearsolid··on 8chan goes dark after hardware provider discontinues service
I think it's really important that the web be free and open and I think Cloudflare and now Voxility have done a tremendous job in exercising their freedom as private entities to shut down voices of hate.

Other service providers can step up to the plate and bear the consequences of providing service to communities that incite violence to the point of having direct ties to mass shootings.

metalgearsolid··on Burnout
I think I'm burning out because my job is too easy. I like working. Satisfaction of completing a good job makes me happy. Is anyone else experiencing burnout as a result of numbingly boring tasks rather than from intense bursts of mentally challenging work? Am I conflating burnout with something else like depression?

Writing up UI designed by a designer who doesn't understand my domain's interface guidelines, reexplaining how my software works to the product person during every product meeting, trudging along under leadership that doesn't understand the costs of all the manual things I'm not being empowered to automate and not having new features to show off every 2 weeks is what is making me feel like I'm burnt out.

I've been at the opposite end of things. I've had to sprint through terminals to catch flight after an incredibly slow deployment at a hotel like out of a nail-biting Hollywood thriller. I've crunched through long days before critical events, and then crunched even longer days to work through all the issues we came across afterwards. But these things usually resulted in satisfaction more than frustration.

My symptoms have been physical too. I've vomited before going into work at least a dozen times. I had to start embracing it to get on with my day. Thankfully this is no longer an issue for myself but I couldn't even tell you what had changed to start preventing that.

metalgearsolid··on Square’s Growth Framework for Engineers and Engineering Managers
My anecdotal evidence of the contrary: I was hired to replace a junior developer at my employer about 2 years ago. When my teammate left (team of two), I was basically handed over the entire mobile app. I even built and deployed an entirely new tv app by myself.

Our dev lead, hired months after me, has been promoted to CTO and even our sole graphic designer, hired many months after me, went from "Graphic Designer" to "Lead Graphic Designer."

So the takeaway here is classic: As an employee you are seen as a cost, and your boss will gladly let you take on the responsibilities of "Lead XYZ" and pay you as "Junior XYZ" if you let them. I unfortunately let them, so I'll cut my losses and chalk it up to things I learned in my early 20s. Could be worse.

metalgearsolid··on I work in an Amazon warehouse in West Sacramento
For a second I thought nobody was going to stick up for the bajillion dollar mega corporation.

Every employer I've worked for has had: * Billions of dollars less money than Amazon * Better working conditions

Amazon doesn't need your voice. The workers who fear an extended bathroom break might get them fired do.

metalgearsolid··on Avoid Artificial Stupidity
I think the author takes for granted the amount of work involved in software engineering. I work for a startup who's product has glaringly obvious flaws. But someone has to do the work of writing code to improve upon existing features. And there are a zillion other things that a business can choose to prioritize over improving an existing feature that gets the job done.
metalgearsolid··on The Gentrification of the Internet
At the ground floor of my former office was a cafe. It wasn't an old, established cultural icon like my local dumping spot, but it employed people who provided their goods and services. That was one year ago. It's been vacant since the rent was raised.

I work in a new building now, but I walk past the former store most days of the week. Through the wall of glass I could see people engage in their activities under the glow of a cliche Edison lightbulb arrangement. I would walk past and see the adjustments of aprons, the exchanges of cash and mugs of coffee, the hats and t-shirts hanging off slabs of wood pinned to the walls, and the sacks of coffee beans stored on top.

A dark and empty room sits behind the facade of LEDs that now occupy the glass. Advertisement.

I think you are conflating gentrification with access. My city has more people and a better public transportation system now. More people have access to the sidewalk in front of my old office where you could once purchase a decent cup of coffee. But what used to be a store, a small seedling of human existence, is now just a wall to display ads on.

metalgearsolid··on Measles Cases Top Last Year’s Total
Well I said "might be" on purpose because hanlon's razor applies very well here.
metalgearsolid··on Measles Cases Top Last Year’s Total
We learned Facebook can be used by foreign adversaries to influence elections. I think we might be learning that it can also be used to commit what you might call biological warfare.
metalgearsolid··on Bootcamps vs. College (2016)
I can say that personally, a bootcamp worked for me as I needed some kind of environment where I had some kind of obligations, real or not. I needed some kind of structure to put it simply. That being said, my success only came after the fact where a genuine interest and passion allowed me to further develop my skills for many months after "graduating"

And I totally agree with the advice to just skip the bootcamp and learn online for free. It's basically the same advice I give people who ask me about my experience. Therefore, I think the best solution would be to organize something within your community to engage with free resources together. Perhaps even pitch in small amounts of money to get a professional to review/mentor/help out on weekends or something like that.

metalgearsolid··on How not to hire a software engineer
I'm unsure why you think my anecdotes of failures hiring software engineers is not relevant to a discussion on how to not hire software engineers. I think you misread my comment, because drawing a conclusion on my hiring process from 3 data points is exactly what I'm not doing.
metalgearsolid··on How not to hire a software engineer
I've helped hire 3 software engineers to both work with me and mentor me and they were all failures.

First two hires quit after only a few weeks.

Third hire was temporarily successful. He eventually revealed himself to be both a jerk and not very technically skilled, so I spoke to higher-ups to get him removed.

My hiring strategy was designed to be simple and respectful. A simple, 20 minute assignment completed between phone screening and on-site. And 2 on-site interviews. Despite the 3 failures, I still feel like it's a good strategy. But evidence says otherwise!

I would have loved to be there the moment they first tried a funnel and failed. Bulk material handling seems pretty interesting to solve.
metalgearsolid··on Tesla’s Troubles Mount: Shuttered Showrooms and Sinking Shares
When you negotiate at a dealership the dealership is deciding how small of a margin they're willing to take. Removing the dealerships means removing this added margin that you're negotiating against.

metalgearsolid··on Intern at a YC Company
I don't qualify.

Edit: I should elaborate. There are companies out there offering internships that I would die for. I don't mean FAANG stuff or Big 5 or whatever. I'm talking small shops like Teenage Engineering or medium sized business like Ableton or Native Instruments. I have been put in an awkward position where I have experience working full time as a developer, but I'm not necessarily learning anything or developing my skills. It sucks not being able to qualify for a certain subset of entry-level opportunities because I'm not apart of the college/university institutions. I will be keeping my head up as the position I am in may just be what forces me to be extraordinary at what I do.

metalgearsolid··on Intern at a YC Company
I've been working full time as a mobile developer for 2 years after dropping out of college nearly immediately and attending a bootcamp the subsequent summer.

metalgearsolid··on Tricks That Can Outsmart Deepfake Videos for Now
There is a lot more than just law enforcement to worry about. Deepfake videos can and will be a tool for political propaganda.
