metabro··on Ask HN: Should I buy a home?
I want to buy a home so I can provide security for my wife and I as a hedge against inflation over time. I don’t want to end up a renter when I’m retired. Buying in california in theory locks in housing costs until I decide to sell.

In my mind, It’s only investing in the sense of trying to hedge against rent inflation.

So it’s out of fear of the future and not out of wanting a house for a house sake. That would be the main motivation. Plus I have the downpayment losing to inflation the longer I take to decide.

I see, you were talking about closing costs. Yeah I fully fund retirement plus I bonds plus sick some away in after tax account and kids 529. So I think I am investing the difference now.

But I still have the couple hundred grand that was earmarked for a down amdownpayment withering away in a savings account.

I agree. Could have done without the “just”.

>Keep in mind that instead of feeling bad about losing possible equity in a house you could invest that money instead of spending it on closing costs. So in a short term situation you can potentially earn more money by NOT buying a house, even if the monthly payments are the same.

Can you explain this a bit more. What is your definition of short term and by investments im assuming equities. Generally for a less than 5 years the advice is not to invest downpayment money in risk assets.

>Also keep in mind that 1 million dollar house in Bay area gets you a reasonably nice place.

I wish.houses in the east bay are listed between 1-1.5. And are sold over list. I’m not even thinking about peninsula or South Bay that is double the price for a smaller home.

For 1m I’d have to move over an hour or more away if not more or buy rougher housing stock on the east bay listed <1m. Might get luckier with condos tho.

metabro··on Ask HN: What do we do with cash now that inflation is a risk?
Doesn’t this read like “just invest in anything”?

OPs q is “what” to invest in given that one can’t hold cash when inflation is rampant.

I’m just continuing to buy us equities with a tilt towards the nasdaq 100. But I have no idea how that will work out in the next 10years.

The other option is to just make as big downpayment as I can (200-400k) in the Bay Area but not really sold on living here long term.

metabro··on Facebook releases ads advocating for more privacy regulations
You ever consider that the truth is pretty simple and fb does actually care about privacy?

It also creates a moat for them as implementing privacy well is expensive.

Brazil has WhatsApp pay
metabro··on Facebook Pay
You are right. Upi is something unique to India so WhatsApp pay in India can’t leverage the Fb pay infrastructure.

However, it can elsewhere including the us.

metabro··on Ask HN: What if you hate web development?
Yes there is but I think esp for sale it means different things at different places.

Big tech companies do hire a ton of data roles but they might not align with what people assume the role to be.

metabro··on Ask HN: What if you hate web development?
There’s a ton of non web dev work at big companies. Anecdotally all my work has been in building data warehouses and data lakes.

Having said that, there will be some cross over with web tech and it’s not a bad idea to start there and end up on the back end of you don’t like it.

I used to work with analytical data that mainly came from mainframes and such with no interaction with the web. Then things changed and I had to understand things like json, restapi etc . For people with a web dev background this isn’t a big deal but for me I struggled a bit adapting.
