meroes··on In math, rigor is vital, but are digitized proofs taking it too far?
If rigor is the whole point why are we so focused on classical math (eg classical logic) not the wider plurality?
meroes··on AI users whose lives were wrecked by delusion
Maybe. AI has always been felt like a game too, so do many things to me. Does classical logical represent some ideal form of reasoning, or is it a game. Game helped me get through all the nagging questions and be good at it. AI RLHF also feels like a game where I do better at work when not anthropomorphizing AI and treating it like a context predictor.
meroes··on So where are all the AI apps?
Ya maybe this. I’ve found some work at the “tool level”. I’m not a programmer, just did RLHF for a few years and AI has helped me make some tools such as a way to scrape and export to excel 35,000 contacts at a company for marketing purposes. Things like that. Yes I know libraries exist and someone who is already a programmer could do this, but also there’s some interesting logic in how to avoid duplicates and interact with modern websites that was impractical for me. And maybe this job is too small for a real programmer.

There are many small, different, and one-time tasks that don’t fit full blown apps. Which I would characterize an AI building a novel app as building a house out of random bits of lumber. It will work but will have no cohesive process and sounds like a nightmare.

meroes··on Walmart: ChatGPT checkout converted 3x worse than website
Idk I earnestly tried using LLMs to find me the smallest by volume regular ATX PC case 3 months ago and it was a nightmare. That info is out there, but it could not avoid mentioning ITX, mini atx (sometimes because Reddit posters messed up) and just missed a bunch of cases. And letting in any mistakes meant I had to double check every volume calculation it did.

I found the Jonsbo D41 without the help of LLM despite trying. (There might be a few smaller but they are 3x the price)

LLMs don’t weigh and surveil the options well. They find some texts like from Reddit in this case that mention a bunch subset of cases and that text will heavily shape the answer. Which is not what you want a commerce agent to do, you don’t want text prediction. I doubt that gives the obscure but optimal option in most cases.

meroes··on How Invisalign became the biggest user of 3D printers
Because it’s annoying to remove and clean for eating each time, it will get to a point where coffee or the odd snack is not worth the hassle. Maybe once in the year process did I find it worth it to remove it to eat fourth time in a day. It’s a weird reorienting. Like jumping into a new energy level that is more taxing, but is in a minima such that you want to stay to 3 meals a day.
meroes··on How Invisalign became the biggest user of 3D printers
Also no one has mentioned many mouths needed some teeth shaving to re-align. You are NOT doing that at home.

Also who’s attaching the attachments (I had 13 at first) to the teeth to help the aligners grab hold?

meroes··on Qatar helium shutdown puts chip supply chain on a two-week clock
I can personally attest that this is not foolproof, if it is even the case. Those helium tanks you can buy for large parties knocked me out as a kid. Lost consciousness fell to the ground, blacked out. Supervise your kids if you buy one!
meroes··on Swiss e-voting pilot can't count 2,048 ballots after decryption failure
In that process there's no proof, but every state manages voter roles which your provisional information will then go through a further process.
meroes··on DARPA’s new X-76
Why? We just kill everything nowadays with missiles, bombs, and rockets-- heads of government, terrorist leaders, schools... so why are we investing in anything like this?

Seems like some kind of GI Joe fantasy that's gone on for too long.

meroes··on Where things stand with the Department of War
Just rewatched Buffalo Soldiers with Joaquin Phoenix. Really don't think that movie could be made today.
meroes··on Terence Tao, at 8 years old (1984) [pdf]
I think a big one you didn’t touch on is being told you do well in school because you are smart, not because you put in the effort.

It’s a lie many start believing, that they don’t put in effort.

meroes··on uBlock filter list to hide all YouTube Shorts
I just use two browsers. On one my recommendations are truly well curated but I can’t watch a single out of place video or my feed is corrupted. The other browser is for brain rot time and it’s the Wild West.

Drop in quality, increase in prices across the board. Thanks Trump!
meroes··on Mathematicians disagree on the essential structure of the complex numbers (2024)
I get that philosophy was outmoded in lots of ways by modern science, but Aristotle is “the father of biology”, basically starting the discipline, so the last point is hard to understand.
meroes··on Apple's latest attempt to launch the new Siri runs into snags
Literally what's the difference between that and Siri now.

Siri can't understand or pronounce very well.

A few weeks ago Siri via Car Play responded to a text and sent it without me saying a word or radio on, and with the setting where it asks first before sending enabled. It responding "Why?" to a serious text was seriously inconvenient in the moment. I watched it happen in disbelief.

meroes··on Mathematicians disagree on the essential structure of the complex numbers (2024)
Very similar arguments date back to at least Plato. Ancient Greek math was based in geometry and Plato argued one could never demonstrate incommensurable lengths of rope due to physical constraints. And yet incommensurable lengths exist in math. So he said the two realms are forever divided.

I think it’s modern science’s use of math that made people forget this.

meroes··on Claude Opus 4.6
What is this supposed to show exactly? Those books have been feed into LLMs for years and there's even likely specific RLHF's on extracting spells from HP.
meroes··on Students using “humanizer” programs to beat accusations of cheating with AI
I don’t think there’s a way to claim remote classes are a scam without saying college as a whole is a scam with your logic. So why single out remote classes?
meroes··on Students using “humanizer” programs to beat accusations of cheating with AI
This is the “back to office” of education. It is not a one size fits all solution. There are so many remote and hybrid classes now you guys sound outdated.
meroes··on My Mom and Dr. DeepSeek (2025)
Not a single response how the doctors got her all this data to be able to be fed into DeepSeek?

AI is doing the last mile and all these posters are saying it’s replacing doctors. Scary stuff.

meroes··on Vitamin D and Omega-3 have a larger effect on depression than antidepressants
Not a bad suggestion, I live in the country so it's very dusty here and my digestion has always been wonky. Thank you.
meroes··on Vitamin D and Omega-3 have a larger effect on depression than antidepressants
I used to have very rough winters. Despite the fact that I ate well and was outside 2+ hours every day. I got my blood tested and I had very low vitamin D, two tiers below normal. This was the first winter being on Vitamin D, and my energy and hunger levels stayed normal. I never crashed or had extreme hunger or trouble sleeping.

Getting Vitamin D from food is a fools errand, and since sunscreen and protective clothing slow vitamin D from the sun drastically, it's in most people's best interest to get it tested.

meroes··on Heathrow scraps liquid container limit
Are these chemicals freezable? Because TSA lets through large quantities frozen matter that is liquid at room temp. E.g. you can bring through a liter of hot sauce if it's frozen when it passes through TSA.
meroes··on Proof of Corn
This is like the 4 World Supercomputers at the end of Asimov’s I, Robot. Humans do all the work (industry, agriculture, economy, etc) and then feed the data into the computers who orchestrate/tell humans what to do.

No podcast app bugs?

Are you even trying?

Podcast app in CarPlay: A episode of a show is playing. It has the episode name, the show name, and a date. None of them hint at being pressable (touchscreen). But one is. Guess which one? The date one. That’s the only one that’s interactive and the only one that takes you to the actual show with its library.

Podcast app on phone. 90% of the time the downloaded episode is not there even if you just downloaded it. Sometimes you have to have another “safe” downloaded episode from another podcast to FORCE downloaded episodes to appear. If you don’t have this safe reserve episode in your downloads, your downloads will be a black hole. Download a safe one, and suddenly the missing ones pop into the folder, or heck, generate the folder at all.

10% of the time the episodes will just fail while downloading without ever resuming.

My god I cancelled my isp because I’m moving. Thought hot spot would be fine for a few months. Every single day I have to restart my MacBook Air for hot spot to work. Multiple times every day I have to turn hot spot off and on even though it’s in discoverable but won’t connect. Multiple times every day hot spot is just off and can’t be turned on in control center. And this is with iPhone 17 and m2 on most recent updates. I can’t imagine on older hardware.
meroes··on AI companies will fail. We can salvage something from the wreckage
What masterful framing AI leaders developed that people say, “AI is doing my work”.

Did other technologies get phrased this way? The accounting software is doing my work? The locomotive is doing my work?
