meric··on Ask HN: Employer can't send me salary from US
"Depending on the country, OFAC programs may freeze assets of embargoed countries, prohibit payment of funds to individuals and countries on the embargo list, or prohibit provision of services to countries subject to US sanctions."

It looks like it's legal to provision services FROM the sanctioned country to the US, only payments to it are embargoed - so the OP can receive payments in another country?

meric··on Ask HN: Employer can't send me salary from US
Moneygram is cheap service too.

Can you open a bank account in a non-sanctioned country, and ask your employer to send your salary there? What about family or relatives overseas? If you play your cards right maybe you can domicile at a non-sanctioned country, "work from home", and work "while travelling" through Lebanon.

meric··on Bitcoin Cash Soars to $700, Coinbase Customers Threaten to Sue
Let's say there is a court case where the judge awards all shareholders of AAPL $100 of compensation for every share held (It's to the shareholders, but not the company, because the court case involved shareholders vs management). The government sends $100 per share to each registered holder. Your investment fund is the registered holder of AAPL securities instead of you. Do you get $100 per share that was held on your behalf, or do the operators of the investment fund get it?
meric··on Ask HN: Why is writing maintainable code hard?
Yes and I note we have built buildings and ships for thousands of years, and software only for the past 150 years.

Is it possible to parse Reddit and pick recent "important" nodes? A website to comment on reddit threads, in the same way reddit is a website to comment on website links... Except the submitted reddit threads are picked automatically by your algorithm.

meric··on What is the fastest way for a programmer to make $10000?
1. Bet $10000 on black at the casino. If you win, well done. If you lose continue.

2. Bet $20000 on black at the casino, if you win, well done. If you lose, you lost $30000.

There is 75% chance to make $10000 - casino edge using this strategy. You can do this on any day of the week the casino is open.

Tangential to the topic at hand:

The substance itself, if you look closely, is only yet another layer of appearance, slightly closer to the Truth - God.

meric··on Artificial Intelligence Is Stuck
Are you nature? Did you learn? Are you not a force?

It's true nature never "tried" anything except to keep going but I posit it does learn, it's memory is our genes and our own memory, and we are the effect of it's force. I also don't see man and nature as separate. If we created AGI, then nature created AGI. AGI can look back and say the step from biological to machine was akin to single to multi celled organisms.

meric··on Esperanto as an Asian language
>" I note Cantonese and Mandarin "dialects" have a common (formal) written form."

I don't know spoken mandarin but I can read written Mandarin, I grew up knowing Cantonese. So I do think they have a common formal written form. And I did specify formal, that strips away the slang Cantonese characters.

It's interesting to see the paper compared the written form to Latin.

meric··on Esperanto as an Asian language
Because the net difference between dialects are the sum of all differences from 2000 years ago to now, while 2000 years ago, less time was elapsed, the net difference was much smaller.

The net difference today is the net difference 2000 years ago plus all the new variations since then.

meric··on Esperanto as an Asian language
Yes that's right - 2000 years ago I'm guessing they all sounded the same. I note Cantonese and Mandarin "dialects" have a common (formal) written form.
meric··on Esperanto as an Asian language
Probably because English only spread from country to country in the past 200 years, and while the others you listed was hundred(s) of years before that.

Chinese, which spread across China 2000 years ago, vary a lot from region to region, even more so than the languages you've mentioned.

meric··on Ask HN: Which cryptocurrencies do you think will succeed and why?
Over what period, 2 years, 5 years, 10 years, 50 years, 100 years, 500 years, 1000 years?
meric··on Why Brilliant Girls Tend to Favor Non-STEM Careers
According to your logic - A patriarchal culture has influenced what roles society find desirable, and therefore we ought to declare that those roles ARE in fact desirable, and the roles patriarchal culture has deemed less desirable , we declare they ARE in fact less desirable.

How does that do anything to patriarchy except by reinforcing it?

If those who are not in the roles patriarchy has defined as desirable, and are in the roles patriarchy has defined as less desirable, by doubling down on the patriarchy's preferences, they have rigged the game and declared themselves the losers. How can equality be achieved?

meric··on Why Brilliant Girls Tend to Favor Non-STEM Careers
If men find it desirable then is it automatically desirable to women?

I am working on a side project involving stocks and programmatically minimising capital gain taxes (e.g. using Australia's 50% CGT discount) and I'm happy to discuss it. I am not sure but I think UK's capital gains tax law have similar opportunities. I put my email in my profile.

meric··on Employees Who Stay in Companies Longer Than Two Years Get Paid 50% Less
I think it's good to have a bit of variety - one or two roles where you stayed 3, 4, 5 years, then a bunch of companies only 1-2 years each. You'd have some depth of experience as well as breadth.
