meric··on Ask a Female Engineer: Thoughts on the Google Memo
If we really dig for an example - mountain climbing guides for Mount Everest, certain groups of people have evolutionary advantages that make them more suited for the job.

In an extreme environment where advantages of the tail end of population distributions are important then it's less likely the market will choose a diversified workforce.

meric··on Ask HN: What is your side hustle? How much money does it make you?
Trading cryptocurrency - in stock markets charting, Elliot wave don't really work as well (or not easy to use), you're trading against hyper experienced investors. In Bitcoin, ethereum, there is broad participation by less experienced investors and speculators, and there is much more emotions in the chart. It makes technical analysis very easy, because the patterns are obvious, easy to spot, much less likely to be manufactured. The transaction fees are also low allowing small positions. So when I see an opportunity I just put $500. Next thing you know I'm up $200 and I cash it out. One more thing is if I'm ever wrong, cryptocurrency is in a bull market, and the position would always get rescued as long as I am patient. Of course I do have discipline and do cut my losses. Transaction costs is cheap, and opportunities are frequent, so it's easy emotionally to do it. I have a few grand this year which is nice.

I do have a lot of money in stocks and with those I don't do nearly as well but clearly I learned enough to make a quid or two in crypto markets.

For a genetic study of prevalence of a genetic condition in Chinese males, you'd want a homogenous group of Chinese males.
meric··on Ask HN: How to stop competitiveness within the Dev world?
I think it can happen when a person identifies themselves with their ability to program. Emotionally then they won't be able to approve their colleagues (even if their mouths move that way), because it'd undermine their own confidence in their own existence. Many of us who program here think "I'm a programmer." And I think that's where the trouble starts.

I don't agree on large marginal taxes on labor, you'd be targeting high earning surgeons rather than rich families inheriting wealth. If we want to tax capital, tax capital, and put a wealth tax of low single digit percentage point paid yearly. If you want to exclude people's first home, then do that.

Ok apparently I have been served unsafe drinking water.

"For Pakistan’s majority, the main source of drinking water is groundwater. The most common instrument for extracting groundwater in rural areas are the hand pump and the motor pump. Hand pumps and motor pumps together provide 61 percent of households with drinking water; in rural areas this percentage rises up to 70. "

"In 2015, 91% of the population had access to an "improved" water supply.[15][16] This was 94% of the population in urban areas and 90% of the population in rural areas."

Oh well I stayed in Pakistan cities and villages and farms and there's clean water, housing and mobile broadband... Sorry to hear the state in India - I incorrectly assumed they were ahead due to higher GDP per capita.

I can't believe you like the idea of discovering alien life so you can use the discovery to troll religions. Surely there's other reasons why this is exciting?!

Yes even most people in Pakistan/India have access to those, plus broadband internet. Yes I've been there.

Many interesting points -

But I want to note - If 10-15 years ago a person said the government records all data going through the internet, that person would be labeled a conspiracy theorist. While technically correct to use this label for this person, I think the emotions associated with the term are not entirely warranted.

meric··on Evidence that ancient farms had different origins than previously thought
I know in this practical universe, Newton's laws of physics and Einstein's views of quantum physics were both at one point "facts" but later shown to be mere approximations and both of them worth being doubted. There's no point to having science if all we are going to do is assume everything that comes out of the process as the gospel.

Christianity is belief in Christ and is close to an infallible thing as we have as humans. There is no problem with Christianity.

What is happening here is "corruption". The people using Christianity to further their own egos and desires are liars and it becomes a question of taking skeptical views towards authoritative figures and knowing who to trust.

Be careful about making Science™ a religion.

Nothing in this world is infallible.

Well there's https://www.cornucopia.org/2017/01/glyphosate-harmful-rats-l... but I suppose fatty liver disease is not as serious as cancer...Wash your vegetables before eating.

EDIT: I think it's prudent to wash vegetables to clean off any herbicides and other chemicals even if they are "known" to be harmless.

Both this and dividends are payments to shareholders but this is different because it's not funded by the company itself. It's a third party electing to pay every shareholder. Also, dividends are regular events, but getting a new asset that can be traded is not.
