meric··on Ask HN: We have a great team and capital but can't find a good idea
I have an idea and a prototype - there’s interesting capital gain tax discount laws in UK and Australia and for investors who buy and sell shares there is always a way to minimise their gains but it’s not straightforward for accountants to calculate it matching the buying and selling transactions if there are many of them for the same stock. The target market is DYI investors and tax accountants. I don’t have the time or capital to keep it going, but I have used the prototype to save myself thousands in taxes and have talked about it to a couple of accountants and let another investor use it with some promise. Feel free to take the idea. If you want an explanation just leave me an email address.
meric··on Ask HN: Take founding-CTO job offer with no equity?
Have a chat and see if you can get a commmon understanding or gentlemen’s agreement. You are right the incentives do look like once the company is up and running it doesn’t make sense to keep a high salary CTO, perhaps you can raise this concern with them? Or perhaps you both might have some agreement e.g. minimum 3 years as long as you’re doing a good job.
meric··on China's Silk Road Illusions
Fifty cents on the dollar versus negative fifty cents on the dollar. With the first approach, you lose 50 cents but you still have 50 cents.
meric··on Ask HN: Are there any monastery-like environments for tech?
I don’t know, an Ivory Tower?

More seriously a lot of hackers choose to go to a country like Thailand where it’s cheap to live and eat and do a stint of tech there.

meric··on Australia Mourns the End of Its Car Manufacturing Industry
The word ‘liberal’ these days have two purposes, the latter of which is to say you are a man of virtue.
meric··on Ask HN: What to do if I'm a bad fit for dev team?
From your description it does look like some sort of hazing ritual - you aren’t junior in technical competence but your are junior in political and social experience in this company and they are “teaching” you what is socially acceptable in this company. Either you are or want to be a similar kind of person and appreciate their efforts or you aren’t or don’t want to be and plan your exit. Before you think about whether you are technically appropriate for the job you must think whether you are socially appropriate for the company. Your life is way too short to spend a third of it pretending to be someone else, so be at a company where you feel like you’re chilling when you’re talking with colleagues.
meric··on Ask HN: Why do you believe that your religion/faith/worldview is correct?
I believed the universe was full of planets before our scientists validated it. My belief was based on the emotions I felt looking into the night sky full of the stars. It’d be a dull life if I could not entertain thoughts and feelings unless they were “scientifically validated”.

Be aware (just in case!) your perception of religion as merely a means of control may be a projection of your own desire to control others, out of your own fear of the unknown beyond what is “scientifically known”, and in doing so have made the religious ones who are “others” who believe in something “shady”, “others” who are less than you.

meric··on Ask HN: How close is modern computing to vintage computing wrt. efficiency?
The pressures of business lies on the fact that most consumers prefer more choice of which software to run than being able to run more software at the same time. This must have been true from the beginning when at first hardly anything was designed for the layperson. This is the magic of Windows 95.

meric··on Feynman’s Breakthrough: Disregard Others
My point is insane geniuses become famous and have a good chance of passing down their genes, and their insanity and genius maybe separate genes, so some descendants may receive only the insane ones. Apologies for not expressing myself in proper academic nonmenclature.
meric··on Feynman’s Breakthrough: Disregard Others
It does for individual societies like ant colonies.
meric··on Feynman’s Breakthrough: Disregard Others
I think that's why evolution selects for a small proportion of insanity in humans - so that some of our geniuses are insane enough to ignore social pressure and make breakthroughs that would be recognised.
meric··on What is going to be the future of Computer Science?
Don’t compare ... imagine if you had the option to swap “souls” with those other persons - your job, your work, your family, your face, your friends, your spouse, and the other person won’t even notice, would you take it?!
meric··on What is going to be the future of Computer Science?
But go open source only if it’s fun for you! If you’re more into closed source development, e.g. algorithmic trading, and competing against traders on the open market, go for it IMO! No need to force yourself to be more cooperative or competitive than you feel like at this moment, especially in your own time!
meric··on Flatiron School settles for operating without license, employment/salary claims
I’m going to mention it if you list it as a requirement and ask me about it.
meric··on Ask HN: Do you have a side project you want to sell?
I was working on a program to calculate minimised Australian capital gains tax return for buying and selling shares. The core part is written as a set of custom PostgreSQL views and window functions. It is hosted by Django. I’ve built a minimal UI for it. Accountants and investors appreciate the tool, but I don’t have the time and money to take it further. I had estimated potential market in Australia from $100k to $1m revenue per year - not enough to start a startup. If interested in buying source code let me know. It supports stock splits and code changes
meric··on Ask HN: Where do you go to get recruiters to find you a job?
Do you have LinkedIn?
meric··on Ask HN: UK Startups – Are You Thinking of Leaving the UK Because of Brexit?
You are comparing increase in total population to increase in foreign born population. If you convert both to use the same terms, one number is more than 6 times bigger than the other.
meric··on Ask HN: Why do so many companies use public information for security questions?
When my bank calls me, they ask for my birthday, name, account number to verify my ID. I always ask them back, "how do I know you are my bank?". The caller always gets the idea. "Oh yeah, right!?!" I then tell them thanks for the call and I'll go to the branch to sort it out.
meric··on How the Elderly Lose Their Rights
More than that, the gradient of good and evil exists in everyone, across activities, across time. Many of the most evil people have done good deeds in their lives, and many of the best people have done bad deeds also. A bad cop or bad judge can yet become a good one.

meric··on Ask HN: Do you meditate and which system do you follow?
Pretty similar stuff - in "mindfulness" I think it's about focusing on the perception of your senses, how the chair feels behind your back, what sounds you're hearing and while you're doing that, you're not thinking.
meric··on Exceptionally Preserved Ancient Ships Discovered in the Black Sea

While being careful to avoid adding to the collection, of course.

meric··on What features would you like to see in an elderly care home sensing system?
Not directly relevant:

I just read an article on aged care this morning.

No but your mum might pick your phone off your pocket to remind you to be careful when it's hanging out while you two are travelling in a country overseas in a danger area.
meric··on Bitcoin is fiat money, too
Currency isn't wealth - wealth is real estate, stock, furniture, computers. Deflation makes it easier for wage earner savers to increase their tangible wealth. The economic data matches this - economy was a lot more equal on the gold standard until 1971, and have become a lot less equal once a policy of inflation is implemented. Are we going to act on theories that match the data or does not match the data? With deflation, UBI income will increase in value over time, the deflation occurring from technological change accruing to UBI receivers.

You can make a positive return in terms of hard disk space. Refrain from swapping USD for hard disk space, and you can get more hard disk space in the future. This applies to all sorts of goods, like TV's, music players, etc. The value of USD is increasing against these goods, yet people still make the trade of USD for goods. I suppose if we increase the inflation of USD such that the price of hard disk space increases in USD terms, then people will be more inclined to swap USD for hard disk space sooner, and it will be a boon for the hard disk industry. But is that real economic growth? It smells more like malinvestment to me. One could even make the argument deflation is good for the environment, people are only inclined to consume that which is necessary, and the structure of the economy's physical capital will be realigned to support that pattern of consumption instead.
