meric··on How the embeddability of Lua impacted its design (2011)
I really like Lua but the future seems uncertain to me at this point. There are more and more forks appearing, I don't know if that's a sign of health or entropy.
meric··on How the Winklevoss Twins Found Vindication in a Bitcoin Fortune
Gold is definitely useful for building the spacecraft going to Mars though. They cover the entire spacecraft in the stuff.

It might be too useful for Mars to use as reserve!

meric··on In interviews with rapists, student pursues not-so-simple question: why?
You’re still generalising your prejudice across a whole gender. You talk about prejudice while exhibiting the very quality. I see how it’s difficult for you but don’t project your difficulties on others.
meric··on In interviews with rapists, student pursues not-so-simple question: why?
You’ve just tagged men as creatures lacking moral agency.
meric··on “Until age 7, children believe that birthday parties CAUSE aging.”
I'm wondering how they figure out what the children really thinks. Having a birthday party, as well as defining age in terms of years, are both defined by human beings. With that logic and lack of background of the weight of the "cultural importance" in each of birthday party and definition of years, I don't find it difficult to believe a child could think a 40 year old could define herself as a 29 year old if other people would hold that birthday party for her.

What I'm saying is - are the children aware our definition of age in terms of years is linked to the physical state of the human body?

meric··on Universities spend millions on accessing results of publicly funded research
At some point, it’s ok to blame the system (e.g. lack of laws) rather than the mugger. You live in a country in civil war, cross the town at night, get mugged, who’s to blame? You, the mugger, the war?
meric··on Ask HN: What business you can start under $100?
Buy a flock of chickens to feed. Sell the eggs.
meric··on How Vladimir Lenin Became a Mushroom
Yes, in the remedial history class.

3. Voting rights.
meric··on Ask HN: How has meditation helped you?
I found myself valuing things society forgot about was important.
meric··on Is Civilization Overrated?
Technology involved investment and investment requires a sufficient return ( even if at times slightly negative ). The return would only be sufficient if there is sufficient demand and that means sufficient population. And what does that mean? More people have more needs, spurring research and development.
meric··on Is Civilization Overrated?
Advances in civilisation is a consequence of ever denser population. Were it not for the high cost of food, were fertilisers invented? Was it not because there are many mouths to feed, we learnt to farm rather than hunt? Is it not because we live so far apart, we must ride cars or trains rather than walk? If we all lived next to each other, would we have built telephones?

Thus it can be said civilisation is a necessary evil - if it were not necessary, we would not have done it - there is so much more leisure time in a hunter gatherer’s week than in a typical city resident’s. But in most places of the world it is no longer possible to live as a hunter gatherer. There are too many mouths to feed!

meric··on Ask HN: We didn't get a single person to pay for our SAAS – what could be wrong?

meric··on Reality vs. Kurzweil’s expectations
At least biotech stocks are increasing at exponential rates.
meric··on Ask HN: Any jobs for average software engineers?
Junior and Senior can mean different things in different companies. One company’s senior is another’s junior and vice versa. IMO go ahead and apply for senior roles and junior roles and learn more about what skills they are really looking for during the interview process, don’t worry about the label.
meric··on Ask HN: How stock price is determined?
It’s a double sided auction so someone who have a sell order at $26 will have priority (Assuming his order has the lowest price), and the stock will tick to $26.
meric··on The end of the housing supply debate (maybe)
The ones who occupy the residences have the votes...
meric··on Ask HN: How much time do you spend on “marketing” your open source projects?

meric··on The Booming Japanese Rent-A-Friend Business
I've read the article, it appears for the father role, the actor has some level of emotional investment. He enjoys creating happiness as the father, and feels guilty when he leaves her, and dreams about her even.
meric··on Ask HN: Lined up clients, gave 2 weeks, offered double salary
It's morally good to fulfil promises - why not do contracting for these two clients - see how you like it, after a while figure out if you want to and can find a way expand the business, or find another w2? You could tell your current employer you promised these guys, so you want to do it for a while, and ask if the $200k can be delayed 6 months? You can ask your employer - Surely they aren't wanting to pay you money to break people's trust?

meric··on The Disappearing American Grad Student
Even in that 27.2 percent, a family of 3 lives on $3k a year. I don’t think 4 months of living expenses is unobtainable, especially when we take into account Chinese people high savings rate.
meric··on The Disappearing American Grad Student
$800 is about the monthly salary for so many Chinese I’m finding it hard to think it is unobtainable.
meric··on Netflix Employees Are Happier with Their Job Than Facebook or Google Employees
And,or: they hire the people most likely to feel unfairly paid, and it’s when we feel we are unfairly paid we are more motivated to negotiate higher salaries, and the more a company’s employees ask for higher salaries the more likely they are paid higher. And if the root cause of the feeling of being unfairly paid isn’t the absolute amount of money being received, then the higher salaries won’t reduce the feeling.
