mepian··on Common Lisp implementation of the Forth 2012 Standard
>you have to write your code to fit a finite memory footprint

This sounds like the opposite of having the more moldable environment.

mepian··on Common Lisp implementation of the Forth 2012 Standard
>Open Genera did very little on top of Genera at that, mostly targeting and making it work on the Ivory.

Ivory support was implemented in Genera 7.3. Open Genera added the virtual machine to run on DEC Alpha hardware, it was Genera 8.3 + VLM, upgraded to Genera 8.5 with Open Genera 2.0.

mepian··on Common Lisp implementation of the Forth 2012 Standard
>even moreso than Lisp

How exactly?

The author is also one of the developers of the Symbolics Virtual Lisp Machine used in Open (and now Portable) Genera: http://pt.withington.org/publications/VLM.html
mepian··on Japan's Kojima, with its proud Jeans St, draws fans of vintage, deep-blue denim
TIL Kojima isn't just a surname (of a famous game designer), but also a town.
mepian··on One Genius' Lonely Crusade to Teach a Computer Common Sense (2016)
The inference engine is implemented in SubL (see https://cyc.com/archives/glossary/subl/ and https://web.archive.org/web/20120513111513/http://www.cyc.co...) which is a variant of Common Lisp, and the knowledge base is implemented in CycL which is divided into the Epistemological Level (EL) and the Heuristic Level (HL).

There was a source-available version called OpenCyc with a small subset of the knowledge base that is now retired and no longer officially available, but it's still easy to find on the net.

mepian··on HBO Documentary Suggests Bitcoin Creator Satoshi Nakamoto Is Peter Todd
That person is already dead, and already widely discussed (including here on HN a few days ago) as a candidate.

mepian··on How were 70s versions of games like Pong built without a programmable computer?
>I felt so smart telling him that was impossible because you can't mod software with a soldering iron.

Many old systems stored their software in a diode matrix, which could be modded with a soldering iron: https://www.cca.org/blog/20120222-Diode-Matrix.shtml

mepian··on Robert Dennard, DRAM Pioneer, has died
>The end of Dennard scaling was why the Pentium 4 architecture was a dead end and never hit 10Ghz like it was supposed to, why the Cell processor never hit the 5Ghz it was supposed to

Around that time the PowerPC 970 aka G5 also failed to achieve 3 GHz, breaking the promise Steve Jobs publicly made at one of his keynotes for Apple.

mepian··on Do AI companies work?
The title reminds me of this classic paper, "If It Works, It's Not AI: A Commercial Look at Artificial Intelligence Startups": https://dspace.mit.edu/handle/1721.1/80558
mepian··on macOS Sequoia is certified to Unix 03
I don’t think any BSD uses Mach, or Quartz, or Cocoa.
mepian··on Ask HN: What are you working on (September 2024)?
I'm working on a public access Symbolics Portable Genera system that will be reachable from the web, similar to Interlisp Online. The current owner of Symbolics' intellectual property gave me the permission to do this. I'm also going to mirror all Symbolics documentation on the same domain.
mepian··on Rewriting Rust: A Response
Mojo is completely unrelated, created by Chris Lattner and his team at Modular AI.
mepian··on Ask HN: Who's low key working two jobs?
>enabled and masked by AI productivity gains.

That's a fantasy, unless these are really menial jobs.

mepian··on X11-Basic (1991-2020)
>But at its core is a message that is missing a little from modern computing - the ability to jump in and just get something simple built quick.

That niche has been pretty much filled by Excel, for better or worse.

mepian··on Optimizing Guile Scheme
At this point it's a separate language from Scheme. I think Chez Scheme tends to be the "default" recommendation.

mepian··on The Symbolics Genera Programming Environment (1987)
Some combination of [0], [1], [2], and [3] is the closest modern equivalent.

[1] https://github.com/joaotavora/sly

[2] https://mcclim.common-lisp.dev/

[3] https://lem-project.github.io/

Also, Portable Genera is still being developed by a former Symbolics employee but unfortunately it is only available for a chosen few, at least for now.

That's not the same PPU, is it?
mepian··on Bluesky Reaches 10M Accounts

  >is a VC-funded corporate network that expects return on investment while saying it is open
  >Nostr
Do you mean the same Nostr that is backed by Jack Dorsey, the Twitter billionaire?
mepian··on Economics is a Field of Software Engineering. It should start acting like one
I don't want economists to move fast and break things.

mepian··on Sony Turns to AI to Tackle Rising Animation Costs and Animator Shortage
They are unrealistic in a consistently stylized way, unlike AI-generated images which are simply broken.
mepian··on Windows NT vs. Unix: A design comparison
98 was the one that introduced NT drivers (WDM).
mepian··on Windows NT vs. Unix: A design comparison
Carbon is a better Apple-related comparison since it's basically a cleaned-up version of the classic Mac OS API as a library that ran on both Mac OS X and classic.
mepian··on Nearly half of Nvidia's revenue comes from four mystery whales each buying $3B+
Apparently HN downranks posts using the same indicator.
mepian··on Nearly half of Nvidia's revenue comes from four mystery whales each buying $3B+
They were one of the first HDTV customers, along with NGIA and NRO.
