Isn't their CEO an active HN user? I wonder if he would comment on this here.

After watching Folding Ideas' video on crypto and NFT (1) I am less convinced that is decentralised. It goes over how crypto ended up becoming the very thing it swore to destroy (banks and oligopolies).

Also anyone with the means can still do a 51% attack if they wanted.

Great to know that. I'll let the parents of Uvalde know how surveillance reduced crime on the 1 year anniversary of the school shooting.

Surveillance does not reduce crime, tending to people's basics needs so that they don't need to commit crimes reduces crimes.

Reddit has always walked "a thin line between becoming a dumpster fire and being the one stop shop for a good portion of the worlds interaction" (1) (2). It is up to you to figure out how you want your experience to be.

> I would personally prefer to see reddit kick all of their moderators to the curb and stop catering to the snowflakes of the world.

I'm sorry about your experiences with whatever moderators you have a beef with. My guess is you are talking about large subreddit(s). Large subreddits have their issues with transparency I agree but what are you trying to suggest? Reddit-appointed moderators? If so, you are in for a rude awakening.

I would instead spend effort in stopping them from charging third party apps for API access that are objectively better than the official apps and ensuring that they dont kill old.reddit.com (3) like they killed i.reddit.com

When was the last time you used any file with .app?

.zip on the other hand is used more frequently across multiple operating systems.

Hard to be enthusiastic about announcements from Google when there's a substantial chance of that product hitting https://killedbygoogle.com/ in 2 years.

There is a huge misunderstanding in what bikes are trying to achieve. No sane one is suggesting you use a bike for a 50 mile work commute.

The criticism is against giant SUVs and pickup trucks for in-city travel. You dont need to burn 2 gallons of fuel to carry a gallon of milk and dozen eggs from 2 miles away. A cargo bike like in the video above is sufficient.

Most cars have 1 passenger in them currently. How do I know that? Because HoV lanes are always empty.

It is a matter of perception. I can tell myself feel-good statistics while ignoring the reality for millions of people as well.

You also conveniently glossed over the other points I brought up

yes that what rumors/speculation is. I have little doubt of it not turning out to be true.

Yes the answer is more complicated due to suburban sprawl and lack of infrastructure, but it is not impossible. It is always possible.

> While the others also have ad revenue streams, they neither depend on it nor is it their biggest source of revenue.

as of yet

Pull up a screenshot of the iPad App Store home page from 2 years ago and look at it today. First thing you see is an ad.

Gambling ads are "paused" for now. [1]

Can't give up like this.

If there is anything I have learned is that persistence will eventually pay off. Louis Rossmann [1] has been fighting the good fight for right to repair for so many years and while it isn't quite there yet and there have been lots of downs, there have also been lots of ups [2]. Nothing's infallible.
