melvinmt··on Apple announces iOS 10
> On iOS, with regular touch on the camera you get the camera. 3D touch - you get the ability to specify the camera you want before loading the app.

Every time there's a thread about 3D Touch on HN, I learn new things. Which tells a lot about the discoverability of the 3D Touch features...

melvinmt··on Ruin My Search History
Will check this out next time I'm in an Apple Store...
melvinmt··on One Click to Be Pro: my list of the best resources for mastering a subject
Pro doesn't stand for Professor or anything. If you have 30 years of experience with something, then generally speaking, you're a pro.
melvinmt··on Moving Forward on Basic Income
> If the pilot goes well, we plan to follow up with the main study. If the pilot doesn’t go well, we’ll consider different approaches.

Interesting. What are the metrics to determine the success or failure of the pilot?

melvinmt··on Coinbase Co-founder: Ethereum Is the Forefront of Digital Currency
What a coincidence, I just bought ETH today with BTC from my Coinbase account.

Does this mean I can hold ETH in a Coinbase wallet soon?

melvinmt··on $1M will buy 122 acres in part of U.S. National Radio Quiet Zone
Sounds like a perfect spot for Adult Summer Camp: http://campgrounded.org
melvinmt··on 42 comes to Silicon Valley: free, non profit coding university
I'm guessing most people over 30 can not commit to a 3-year full time study, but it's weird indeed that they're not even allowed in.
melvinmt··on 42 comes to Silicon Valley: free, non profit coding university
> There are no school fees: running costs for the 10 first years (estimated at 20 to 50 million euros) have been personally funded by Xavier Niel. 42 will train each year one thousand students...

There are so many billionaires and millionaires in Silicon Valley who could easily fund a school like this, it simply baffles me that none of them have a tuition-free school of their own.

melvinmt··on When Websites Won’t Take No for an Answer
Debunked by what exactly? Can you prove/guarantee it's not happening?

While I don't have any other evidence than my pretty specific anecdotal experience to prove it's true (in addition to what friends in the airline industry told me), it is common knowledge that price discrimination is a pretty fundamental aspect of airline pricing so this "myth" is not that inconceivable.

melvinmt··on When Websites Won’t Take No for an Answer
> Rates are not raised because you've been browsing them for awhile

That's exactly what they do. If you're browsing for plane tickets and you're a bit undecisive (like me), don't be surprised if the prices go up by 200% for that specific day you wanted to book. Going incognito and in some cases returning after a hour will bring the prices back down.

melvinmt··on AWS IoT Button
So it's about $0.02 per click. That is a bit expensive.
melvinmt··on Tech layoffs more than double in Bay Area
I whole fully agree with the points you make but I want to point out that for engineers in Silicon Valley, it's less dramatic to get laid off than you make it sound (I've been a part of a couple and I've had to lay off people as well).

The reality is in that most cases, you just change a tagline here and there, recruiters call you, and you just go on and do the next great thing.

The only ones for whom this is a problem are probably the ones with a "nice to have" position and they will have a hard time finding a new job. This sucks, but this is, like you said, also the founder's fault so it's up to the founder to give them a nice severance pay, great recommendations and preferably even introductions to other companies.

melvinmt··on Show HN: Speech Coaching App – Stop Saying 'Umm', 'Like', 'Uhh'
> Removing filler words from normal speech gives you clearer speech, not a sermon. Orators use far more tricks than avoiding filler. They exude emotion. Oration is a performance, and for most people it does not come naturally.

I'm a bit confused. So if I understand you correctly, Sam is the one with clear, calm speech, but Craig is the praised "orator", yet he would appear "insane" in your living room. So which one do you think is the better speaker?

melvinmt··on Meet the YC S16 Batch
It would be interesting to also see YC's perspective on the idea/company/founders. Why did you choose to fund them?
melvinmt··on Software Update Destroys $286M Japanese Satellite
Have you ever heard of a thing called the "Computer Fraud and Abuse Act"? Even the act of disclosing a vulnerability to the company itself can be misconstrued by paranoid big corps as a "security breach", hence the possibility of a 30 years sentence. I'm just saying it's not worth the risk. At least not in the US.
melvinmt··on Software Update Destroys $286M Japanese Satellite
Look at it this way, you could also have been "rewarded" with a 30-year jail sentence. Please don't mess with big corps.
melvinmt··on Zenefits Was the Perfect Startup, Then It Self-Disrupted
I'm confused, are Zenefits/Zenpayroll the same company?
melvinmt··on [dead]
Funny how all the UK headlines just mention that Khan won from Goldsmith, but outside of the UK the news focuses on a "Muslim mayor".
melvinmt··on Inside Palantir
Price discrimination at its finest.

> "If you can pay, you have to pay us. If you are a philanthropy stopping pedophiles, we will give you the same product you would get if you are wealthy special forces unit in a very wealthy country," Karp said.

> "If you're a hedge fund and you make a billion dollars and say you're not going to pay us, well, that's rapacious and we're not going to take your calls anymore."

melvinmt··on Homeless alone
> it does mean they weren't spending all of their time trying to figure out where they were going to sleep or where their next meal was coming from.

This is also a crucial concept in understanding why the poor stay poor: they simply can't afford to spend time and resources on the long term if they need to worry about meeting basic needs on a daily basis.

If you're interested in learning more about this, I would recommend to read Scarcity, a wonderful book that explores this in more detail: http://www.amazon.com/Scarcity-Science-Having-Defines-Lives/...

melvinmt··on Refined Twitter
I would recommend to look into a well organized boilerplate repo to learn how to structure larger projects. Here's one for react/redux/react-router: https://github.com/davezuko/react-redux-starter-kit

melvinmt··on European Central Bank to withdraw €500 note
The €500 note is quite big as well (would not fit easily in a wallet), here's a comparison: http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2010/01/27/article-1246519-08...
melvinmt··on European Central Bank to withdraw €500 note
Goldman Sachs just started to offer 1.05% on savings: https://www.gsbank.com

US inflation for last 12 months as of March 2016 was 0.9%.

melvinmt··on How to Earn a Technical Co-Founder
Nothing is a worse conversation than an engineer trying to rewrite all the code for no business critical reason. I definitely understand that working with crappy offshore code is a pain in the ass (doing that now!), but if it works, it works. I've worked on enough crappy code bases for successful companies (as in $100M/yoy revenue on "prototype" code) to realize that these worries we have as an engineer really don't matter. The only thing that ultimately matters for the business is having something that people want to use.
melvinmt··on How to Earn a Technical Co-Founder
Go to any Hackers/Founders meetup, and you'll be swamped with non-technical people trying to meet you.
melvinmt··on Google: End of the Online Advertising Bubble
Brace yourselves, Google is launching something social again...

This is why I have mad respect for Zuckerberg. He's willing to place gigantic bets (Instagram/WhatsApp) when and where it matters.

melvinmt··on WhatsApp is back online in Brazil
Sounds similar to the position that Skype was in a decade ago. Telcos in Europe hated Skype and tried everything to block it or making it slow (deep packet inspection) but when the iPhone came out they couldn't stop the mobile web revolution.
