melloclello··on Frame-Based Editing
> I wouldn't give a newcomer emacs (or vi) but I would give them the concept of paredit.

This is exactly what I was suggesting

melloclello··on Frame-Based Editing
Keep fleshing it out - indeed use your experience with paredit to guide you - the benefit would be that people who don't necessarily know emacs etc can suddenly write lisp the way it was supposed to be written. Imagine if you were new to programming and something like that was the tool you were given?
melloclello··on Unison: a next-generation programming platform
Well, it just means you only have one V and one C for all the Ms in the universe.
melloclello··on Unison: a next-generation programming platform
Also, "tree editor".
melloclello··on Programmer Tooling Beyond Plain Text
I've long felt that a proper structured editor would work somewhat like a tree editor[1]. Code is trees, right?

[1] https://pcmonk.wordpress.com/2014/04/01/why-dont-we-have-a-g...

If you had a really good, intuitive tree editor, I would imagine it would be easily adaptable to all kinds of interfaces and scenarios. Mobile, web, VR...

You're talking about Urbit, right

melloclello··on Ask HN: Is my code any good?
Devil's advocate: I feel like TDD for iOS is a bit of a wasteland, and don't usually bother with it personally, unless there's some especially dense mission-critical business logic that I need to be 100% confident in.
melloclello··on Input: Fonts for Code and Data
This is amazing, I wish programming was more like this.
melloclello··on Show HN: CALX, a tactile, gestural RPN calculator for iOS
Shameless repost since my earlier post sank like a stone.

There's also a promo site[1] that explains a little more about CALX if anybody's interested, also by all means please let me know if you'd like a promo code :)

melloclello··on The Essence of Peopling
Welcome to Ribbonfarm.
melloclello··on The daily stand-up is an anti-pattern
I'd just like to say that 10am is still too early for me. After lunch is more like where I'm at.
melloclello··on The daily stand-up is an anti-pattern
I mainly resent standups because most employers I've ever had scheduled them at 9am, and I'm not really ready to talk to other humans yet at that hour.
melloclello··on Did Neurons Evolve Twice?
I had never considered that we might actually be ahead of the Great Filter. From what I'd read about it I've always thought of it as something we are yet to run into.
melloclello··on Why Are Carrots Orange? It Is Political (2009)
Kinda earthy, rather than carroty. Distinct beetrooty flavour.
melloclello··on Why Are Carrots Orange? It Is Political (2009)
I'm sure convenience also played a part - just for the heck of it, I cooked a meal with purple carrots in it recently and they stained the fuck out of my kitchen bench, hands, and the vegetable soup they were in. It was like working with beetroot.
melloclello··on Raytracing a Black Hole
I have to wonder if anywhere, in the history of the universe, a sentient being has ever fallen into a black hole.
melloclello··on Breathtaking Pictures from Mars Colour Camera of India’s Mars Orbiter Spacecraft
Not to denigrate ISRO's efforts, but is there a reason the pictures look so... VHS-y?
melloclello··on Power efficiency in the violin
> But were the design changes intentional? To answer this question, the researchers worked the measurements from hundreds of Cremonese-era violins into an evolutionary model, and found that any change in design could reasonably be explained by natural mutation — or, in this case, craftsmanship error.

I want to see them build and run that evolutionary model and generate some mutant future instruments.

melloclello··on Why I Don't Hate Git: Hidden Consistency
I agree - I don't think it's possible to put a sound visual representation over the top of git, it's too abstract. A coherent command line interface should be possible, though.
melloclello··on Why I Don't Hate Git: Hidden Consistency
This article begs the question - what might a sane/consistent UI on top of git look like?
melloclello··on The Unreasonable Effectiveness of Mathematics (1980)
I would disagree - the economy is anti-inductive[1] (in that it resists attempts to understand it). As soon as you implement the results of your sufficiently-sophisticated model, the economy will start to be influenced by that.

Any viable model of the economy would therefore have to recursively contain a model of the model of the economy and so on.

Imagine where we'd be today if this had taken off instead of x86...
melloclello··on I made a debugger that draws the state machine of the program
I always thought that a something like this was how the computers on Star Trek worked.

"Computer! Run a level five diagnostic of the starboard nacelles!" bloop bloop bloop...

The foley artists did a pretty terrific job of using sound to differentiate between heavy computation, success, and failure etc. Makes me kinda wish my computer could play a minor third instead of just plopping up a dialog box when things go wrong.

melloclello··on I made a debugger that draws the state machine of the program
damn, that's gangster

melloclello··on Why I Don't Use CoffeeScript (2011)
I hate CoffeeScript for a simple reason - you can't copy and paste it into your browser's console.
