mekster··on JetBrains releases RustRover IDE for Rust development
My NeoVim broke so often I came to realize a product that has 50 random people working on the core and various plugins is not going to make a stable product that would work for years.

After all, there is no consistent testing as a whole product but it's a combination of "works for me" and after some months of originally setting the editor up, things start to break apart saying something is deprecated, something is incompatible with something else and it will start asking for newer NeoVim version which the distro obviously can't keep up with. It's like you're using a nightly build of a product or worse if things can't be fixed.

Maybe someone could snapshot a stable state of NeoVim + some popular plugins and release as some sort of LTS and things might change but currently you'll need to spend time fixing frequently than use it for what you need it for.

What's the state of Fleet at this moment? I haven't been following it since I've tried a few years ago and looked it was still at its early stage then.

Is JetBrains aiming to replace IntelliJ with it at some point or it would be an offering to complement or compete with the current offerings?

It's interesting someone gets irritated when other people don't give you free food, not to mention teach them how food should be free.
mekster··on Odroid-H4
Which is good if you want to have full support of the docker ecosystem as some containers don't support ARM.
mekster··on Ask HN: Those of you who don't use AWS/Azure/GCP, what do you use for hosting?
What does it mean?
mekster··on The only two log levels you need are INFO and ERROR
> something weird/unlikely happened

This is already an error.

Warning is supposed to be before anything weird takes place.

mekster··on Ask HN: Those of you who don't use AWS/Azure/GCP, what do you use for hosting?
Vultr. Good thing about Vultr is they also have additional block storage that is HDD based which is far cheaper than NVMe based when all you want is space and not speed.

You're just over generalizing it. You would burn time dealing with the way of the big 3 instead of learning what you're using and if you ever want to migrate out, you'll be burning more time than you may be able to afford.

How do you handle hardware failures or screw ups for the server to go offline?

When I saw one of my server not coming back up at home for some reason on a reboot, I realized I needed spare hardware to reliably operate them. I can't let it stay offline while I order for the spare parts to arrive, even though I have backup data ready elsewhere to be restored.

Agree that cloud is too expensive these days. When you realize buying a server with 32 GB memory with 1TB nvme is only $250 (apparently no virtual neighbors bugging for your resource) and you're meant to pay that same price monthly to be on the cloud, it starts to feel like a joke.

How is running a database hard? It is more annoying to receive alerts from AWS of expiring certificates and suddenly they start charging for extended support when the version goes EOL on their definition and having have to deal with them.

At least by running stuff yourself, you gain universal knowledge that lasts as long as you're using that software but learning the way of AWS is a complete waste if you ever leave them.

Do people nowadays think they're smart by using the myriad of provided services for no good reason not knowing they're being locked and milked?

mekster··on Ask HN: Those of you who don't use AWS/Azure/GCP, what do you use for hosting?
Don't underestimate the downside of using those "heaps of services". It was funny to see someone using RDS and was warned of expiring CA certificate and AWS suddenly charging for extended support because the version they were using went out of support period.

I laughed how they were supposed to just install MySQL locally and avoided all that. If you wanted point in time recovery, just read the doc for an hour and do it yourself when you have to spend more time reading warning email from AWS and search around to see what they meant for unnecessary interactions of their artificial limitations.

Some people seem to think using "heaps of services" make them look smarter but they're not.

Free plans are to lure you into their locked up ecosystem and gives you no gain on knowledge by dealing with their limitations, rather better to learn the tools you're using.

I used to like Linode, until I started using zfs.

Their backup is not at a block level just because they can optimize it for their benefit which limits the partition be formatted only in unencrypted ext3 or ext4 to be able to use their backup service.

https://www.linode.com/docs/products/storage/backups/#additi...

I don't like them sweeping through list of files daily and their backup service choked having millions of files a few years ago while I was still with them. Backing up at a block level will never impose such limitations.

So, their backup service which is one of the reason to use a cloud with hefty 20% added charge, is pretty much meaningless if you're using zfs. Haven't checked all but a provider taking backup at a file system level should be totally the minority.

Did using CentOS Stream screw you or you're just complaining for nothing?
mekster··on Ubuntu 24.04 Noble Numbat
What do you use Linux for?

Predictable release cycle is already worth it for server use and also for those who need commercial support.

And zfs is too good to miss and Ubuntu has supported it for very easy use for quite a while.

And it feels comfortable to use a distro who has corporate customers as they may lose substantial money if they're not careful.

mekster··on Ask HN: What are your go to shell one-liners?

  alias ..='cd ..'
  alias ...='cd ../..'
  alias ....='cd ../../..'
They read more intuitively and 'cd -' works better.

Where is the ecosystem with jails? Not talking about technical advantages.
mekster··on NetBSD 10.0 Released
How can you be thankful to a lack of a ecosystem.

BSD now has less room in the server use cases, where it should shine, without being able to use Docker at all.

mekster··on Vultr is now claiming full perpetual commercial rights over all hosted content
Why would Nintendo do anything unless Vultr deliberately makes money from those contents.
mekster··on Vultr is now claiming full perpetual commercial rights over all hosted content
Maybe it's time that basement servers should be the norm for self hosters.

I bought a HardKermel x64 servers and happy that I have no ToS to worry about. I can send encrypted back ups to utilize any cloud out there without a concern.

Could've tried Pi but some docker packages don't run on Arm.

Perhaps do a little research than believe whatever you want to believe?

Just searching for "german economy" would yield the world is saying the opposite.

mekster··on Japan's Nikkei surpasses 1989 all-time high
Many people, especially in Japan don't realize not investing and simply saving means they're actually investing in their own country long term, which for Japan, doesn't look like a smart strategy at this point.
mekster··on Japan's Nikkei surpasses 1989 all-time high
Manufacturing domestically doesn't mean it's not influenced.

Much food and natural resources are imported, not to mention anything dollar pegged like smartphones are simply getting more expensive. Seriously, stuffs like iPhone and GPU feel stupidly expensive but when you check the price in dollars, they look acceptable.
