mehulkar··on WTF Google, you stole my $5
I've never had to call or email Amazon though. Not for retail anyway. Just getting into AWS and we'll see how that goes.
mehulkar··on WTF Google, you stole my $5
I think this is just a pattern with companies that have high numbers of employees. Facebook is just as inaccessible. Although I suspect that it's hard to troubleshoot Facebook to begin with since the particulars of their product changes so often.
mehulkar··on Show HN: ppl - The Command Line Address Book
Maybe too much, but how about a `txt` or `email` command to send short messages to contacts?

mehulkar··on Welcome to a New Gist
I know HN doesn't believe in a comment where an upvote will suffice, but the first thing I searched this thread was for "pull request" and by golly, I think they would be a great addition also.
mehulkar··on The Next SoundCloud Becomes SoundCloud
Not sure about traction/usage of either, but Bandcamp shows up over and over as the other big contender. ReverbNation sometimes, but ReverbNation is too much clutter for me.
mehulkar··on How goatse.cx went from shock site to webmail service
"Goatse is a piece of the Internet generation's cultural legacy" Highlight of the article.

I don't like the slider. I'd prefer a boolean :) or :(. Other than that, this is great.

mehulkar··on Ghost — rethinking WordPress
You should change "Less Options" to "Fewer Options". It's one of those things that if you know the difference, you can't stop noticing it everywhere.
mehulkar··on A life less posted
This is difficult to maintain for shared group experiences though. For example, I went on a group trip in 2004 to Europe with a group of strangers. I became friends with a few and interacted with many. Sure I could keep in touch via email or phone with the few, but what we really value about those 10 days was the shared group experience. A 20 person conference call seems much less viable than a Facebook group with the occasional reminiscing post. This starts with a friend request.

Of course this escalates quite quickly. Shared experiences as classmates or part of a student organization or even a workplace. We used to only have the option of maintaining individual relationships. Now that we have the option of maintaining group relationships, the definition of "friend" is fuzzy.

mehulkar··on SAT: Getting the lowest score possible
Making the answer hard to deduce/calculate is only one side of the difficulty. The other side is making the question hard to decipher. I don't think the SAT has any questions that are as straightforward as your example, but I could be wrong.
mehulkar··on SAT: Getting the lowest score possible
The "obviously wrong option" often turns out not to be as wrong as I first thought.
mehulkar··on SAT: Getting the lowest score possible
Knowing an absolutely incorrect answer to every question is difficult to ensure. It leaves things up to chance since you cannot prepare for the exact questions you get. On the other hand, knowing all the correct answers is perfectly doable.
mehulkar··on SAT: Getting the lowest score possible
Woops, my lottery was supposed to refer to people who can get the lowest possible ("perfect") score. Looks like I can't edit my comment now.
mehulkar··on SAT: Getting the lowest score possible
This reminds of me playing Hearts on a PC. You can try really hard to get a good score, or you can get the worst score possible and win the round[1]. I didn't read the whole article, but it was pretty clear that to get the lowest possible score you have to know the correct response to every question. (A little less black & white for the essay section, but you get the gist.)

Colleges should have a lottery admission available to people who can get a perfect score on the SAT/ACT. Students would inadvertently study harder and learn proportionally more than if they were to study hard enough to get a perfect score.

mehulkar··on How I automated the boring parts of life
When I buy goods and services, I am hacking my life ;)
mehulkar··on How I automated the boring parts of life
I'm curious if anyone else is curious about the distinction between automation and delegation. It seems like a better description of OPs life hack is the latter. I'm not sure if this is relevant, but if you take the universe or the world or a society and the amount of work being done as a zero sum equation, handing off buying plane tickets isn't really automation because you're not reducing the total work in the system; you're just changing where the resources come from.

You could say that delegating work to "experts" means the work is done more efficiently so you save resources, and that's a step in the right direction towards automation, but not automation.

Note: I'm very interested in words and the contrast between what they mean and how people use them.

mehulkar··on Don’t mess with IBM
I'm not in this situation myself, but I know that people who are not citizens / don't have permanent resident status have far fewer options if they want to work in the States.

I used to teach tennis. When my boss was about to move to the next level with a student, he often asked the little kid the question: "Can you learn to swim without getting in the water?" Stuck with me for a couple years now and it applies to many other situations off-court, including this one.

Not sure if this counts as empirical evidence but I was a Dev Bootcamp graduate. Working full time now. I recognize the deficiencies in my knowledge and experience before anyone else does, and there are many, but I am stil learning and loving what I do.
