>"pro-abortion" lol.

heartless thing to laugh about

mehaveaccount··on Keep the Internet Open
True, I always wonder what it must be like to be those billionaires because I would have retired after my first 10 million.
mehaveaccount··on Keep the Internet Open
> the death of Net Neutrality would be the best competitive moat imaginable for Google, Facebook, Amazon, etc. While all their CEOs will make faint noises in favor of Net Neutrality, SV outspends Wall Street 2:1 on lobbying[1], the goal of which is to cement monopoly status, not to make the world a better place. Most of it goes to Republicans.

The leaders of Google, Facebook, Amazon, etc are NOT Republicans. Most of them are pro-immigration, pro-abortion, and pro-gay marriage.

mehaveaccount··on Ask HN: Which Berkeley Courses Should I Archive?
It is bizarre though, the Deaf Community outpaces even mexican -flag waving La Raza types in their desire to make other Americans pay for a separate piece of the US for themselves.
mehaveaccount··on On Programming Languages: Why My Dad Went from Programming to Driving a Bus
That's partially true, but also assumes there's "something wrong" with being poor. Now of course, being poor is a worse lifestyle than being rich if all else were equal, but all else isn't equal. What if someone doesn't want to move to a major tech hub and instead makes just enough money doing something tolerable with people they like enough and they get to live and spend time with people they love. Am I really going to tell them they're missing out on life by not fleeing to a research university for 4 years and then Skyping their loved ones from their [big city] apartment while their roommates are playing loud music through the wall and they have no friends within 2 hours travel? All I'm saying is that there are tradeoffs that make working class people better off in many cases.
mehaveaccount··on On Programming Languages: Why My Dad Went from Programming to Driving a Bus
Male here, legos bored me. I do computers because I like computers. My parents, working class government employees, constantly pestered me to follow them and always asked me what anyone could possibly do with math and computers besides be an accountant, actuary, or teach those subjects in highschool. But like most males I had a driving interest in computers so I couldn't be dissuaded.

> I absolutely love how the left becomes a fan of states rights on immigration, but pretends it isn't a challenge to Roe v Wade.

Indeed, Roe v. Wade or Gay marriage too. I mean, my state voted in gay marriage willingly, but I imagine some more religious states may want to determine the laws in their own state, like California does with weed and immigration

Source?
mehaveaccount··on Where Wal-Mart Failed, Aldi Succeeds (2011)
Makes a lot of sense, suburbs are both literally and culturally the border between rural and urban
mehaveaccount··on Why Trello Failed to Build a $1B Business
Checkout selfhosted.reddit.com there are a lot of self hosted Trello clones already
mehaveaccount··on Ask HN: How do you set prices?

>Isn't that quite dishonest? I'm fairly sure this is illegal in at least the UK, so I'd assume in plenty other EU countries too. Are you in the US? Is this practice legal there?

That's weird, are people in the UK not able to see through marketing gimmicks?

mehaveaccount··on Where Wal-Mart Failed, Aldi Succeeds (2011)
Walmart is for Ruralites and Aldi is for Urbanites, I think this sums up why NYT would praise Aldi over Walmart.
mehaveaccount··on Data structures and algorithms problems in C++ using STL
I didn't know about this problem before but now I'm incredibly curious. I love these problems where you find a trade-off between two seemingly unrelated things, here how going from o(sqrt(n)) to o(log(n)) memoey increases the code complexity by order of magnitude. If you take the code for an o(1) or o(log(n)) memory sorting algorithm, I wonder if you can identify a subroutine that if memoized would give you an o(sqrt(n)) memory sorting algorithm you already know.
mehaveaccount··on YC will hold interviews in Vancouver for founders who can’t get US visas
That's a good point, you should definitely stay out of the US. ...For privacy
mehaveaccount··on YC will hold interviews in Vancouver for founders who can’t get US visas
What if the opposition is literally hysterical though?
mehaveaccount··on YC will hold interviews in Vancouver for founders who can’t get US visas
I'm a visa holder and I'm not worried because worst case scenario I go back home to live with my family who loves me.
mehaveaccount··on YC will hold interviews in Vancouver for founders who can’t get US visas
Calexit would allow California to bring in anyone they want though, and SF wouldn't have to worry about the US immigration policy screwing up it's tech scene. I'm looking forward to the Calexit proposition vote.

So "it's happening regardless of any evidence it's happening." No one believes that.
mehaveaccount··on Why Facts Don't Change Our Minds
>Having a citation from a well regarded source

Who gets to decide who is "well regarded" and who is not?

mehaveaccount··on Why Facts Don't Change Our Minds
>OK, but many times that I see people making this argument they turn around and point me to some conspiracy theory from some guy yelling on youtube.

So special interests can pay the money to tell their opinions on TV and in newspapers so they get to be "legitimate", but people who use cheaper channels accessible to the poor are "conspiracy theorists".

mehaveaccount··on Some Reflections on Being Turned Down for a Lot of Data Science Jobs
People don't pay for linear regressions. They pay for discrete things: what is my best option among my three clear courses of action. Linear regression can be a tiny piece of a larger argument in favor or against one option or the other, but that alone doesn't make money.

I would agree with the statement that "Sexual harassment and "microaggressions" are not systemic problems for the tech industry. They don’t happen to the women at my company. Diversity is also not systemic because I see a lot of women at my company." What I assume is being perceived as "microaggressions" is just real life happening to young persons that have been coddled up until joining the work force. The reason women complain about it more than men is that men receive no sympathy and so learn quite young how to deal with other people.
mehaveaccount··on R Passes SAS, but Python Leaves Them Both Behind
That's a good description for a data engineer from my end.
mehaveaccount··on Making math more Lego-like
University magazines are a terrible place to learn about new research because they are effectively trying to sell the research at their university as great whether it is really great or not. Looking at the arxiv link they linked I was underwhelmed compared to the title. It is not a new lego-like language for "mathematics", it's some definitions in a very particular subfield in mathematics. An accomplishment within that subfield to be sure, but not anything relevant to the wider math community and certainly not Hacker News.
mehaveaccount··on How we secretly introduced Haskell and got away with it
Actually if you wanted a statically typed compiled functional language of Haskell while keeping the declarative logic paradigm of Prolog, then the Mercury programming language was made exactly for you!
