megaman8··on The Bermuda Triangle of Wealth
believe me, i find it equally frustrating that all the crap we don't need is getting cheaper and cheaper with more progress. And yet, the bare essentials of life which are so important, aren't making any progress at all: shelter and medical insurance, etc.
megaman8··on The Bermuda Triangle of Wealth
True, but the total wealth increases. Money is just a proxy for the things we want. the things we want are the actual wealth. When you can buy 50" LCD screen for 200$ instead of 700$, you've got more wealth, same for land: that's Progress.
megaman8··on The Bermuda Triangle of Wealth
Whenever people mention real wages, I get the feeling they're not really "real". What I mean is that I don't think they're calculating inflation correctly. Inflation doesn't seem to take into account Housing costs, which often cost significantly more than their constituent building blocks upon which inflation is based. Furthermore, I believe real wages should be calculated based on your ability to afford the necessities of life: shelter, food, water, transportation, medical rather than everything under the sun (most of which won't raise your living standard much). I'd like to see a chart that calculates real "real" wages for the last 50 years,.
megaman8··on The Bermuda Triangle of Wealth
It's an excellent point. As for housing, where does the extra wealth go? Nowhere. No one benefits when you lock up land that can't be used by anyone. Now you might argue that existing land owners benefit: but they actually don't. Because they're not moving and selling, they haven't realized any gain at all. If they sold but stay in the same area, there's no gain. And in states without the reprehensible prop 13, those in expensive housing will pay even higher property taxes.

We could literally print nearly free wealth, inflation free, if we just opened up land for development. It's a win win win.

megaman8··on How can I drink a bubble tea to ensure that I don’t finish the tea before bobas?
Well, the powdery stuff is quite similar to non-dairy creamer and thus is extremely delicious but also very very bad for your health, as they contain hydrogenated or even partially hydrogenated oils: thus may well contain trans fats!

personally, I always ask them to make it without any powders "no non-dairy creamers". in this case they'll use condensed milk or whole milk which is still bad for you but not as bad as trans fats.

megaman8··on How can I drink a bubble tea to ensure that I don’t finish the tea before bobas?
I can totally relate.

This is a big problem to solve. Let's combine video input with some AI to estimate the boba to tea ratio. Then the app can calculate the precise angle of straw placement to maximize boba intake.

megaman8··on The tragic end of Telltale Games
For all the newbs out there, if you're trying to figure out whether not to accept an offer, know that there is a huge difference in work life balance from company to company: above you've seen the two extremes.

Read the glassdoor reviews very carefully.

megaman8··on In 1979, a chain email about science fiction spawned the modern internet?
>> After an unsuccessful attempt to sell ARPANET to a commercial buyer (AT&T could have literally owned the internet, but said No thanks), the government split the system in two

Can you imagine what it would be like if AT&T bought the internet?

megaman8··on The Tyranny of the U.S. Dollar
Yes, but the Fed enables this behavior by loaning the banks money.

The point is, it's due to the govt that the money supply is increasing hence we have inflation.

megaman8··on IPO Market Has Never Been This Forgiving to Money-Losing Firms
"This time is different"
megaman8··on Vigilante engineer stops Waymo from patenting key lidar technology
Using Patents to patent trivial stuff and then getting a monopoly from the government as reward is just rent seeking evil and wrong on so many levels.
megaman8··on Show HN: We made a real-time editor for web database apps
My first impression was that this was something kinda like phpmyadmin, but more convenient. phpmyadmin takes work to install (30m plus when you include debug time). And it's not super user friendly.

but then when i went to the web page, it seems like something else.

keep in mind I only spent about 60 seconds on the page.

Is there a way to dumb down the presentation a bit? perhaps, just show a super simple example that can be understood in a very short time.

megaman8··on Use of internet, social media, digital devices plateaus in US
With this finding, I hope we can get back to developing atom based solutions as opposed to bit solutions (reference avc.com).
megaman8··on Jobs at Google (1999)
This will vary widely based on job function: it may be true for engineers, but it's not true for marketing. From what I hear, at Facebook and google, if you apply for a marketing job, You absolutely don't stand a chance unless you've come from a top 10 school or ivy leage school
megaman8··on Facebook Is Giving Advertisers Access To Your Shadow Contact Information
I think it's much worse when HTC places ads on your phone via bloatware apps that can't be uninstalled. That's absolutely vicious and hardly ever gets any press time. But, oh, facebook makes a minor little slip up and they even FIX the problem and everyone looses their heads over it.
megaman8··on Treating the Bay Area as like working in the mines
What the article is saying is, If you are young and have no family, you can rent a room really cheaply say 1400$ for a 1 bedroom, or bunk up with a mate for 700$ (2 people renting 1 room), and save most of your income for about 10 years - durring that time you can save about 500K. Then after that, get out and go anywhere but CA. In the rest of the US, you can buy a house for 300K and have a nice life.

The trick is, to not settle down. Don't get a wife or girlfriend or friends. If you that, you'll be able to walk away from it all very easily.

megaman8··on Treating the Bay Area as like working in the mines
You can avoid many of these places if you let the recruiters, HR and interviewers know that your looking for a place with good work life balance. It is hard to find good companies to work for in the bay area, but there are a few that exist. Make sure you read the glassdoor reviews: don't pay attention to the star rating (those are completely messed up), but the truth tends to come out in the writings, especially the longer reviews. Read those very carefully. If the place is toxic, it often comes out.
megaman8··on Ask HN: How to come up with monetizable side project ideas?
There's a lot of stuff in this space that hasn't been done yet, but that's for a very good reason. First of all, it doesn't pass the toothbrush test: it's the type of thing that's super valuable the first time you visit but you don't really need to come back to it over and over.

Second big problem: SEO. Search engines like long form written content, they don't know how to value tools that slice and dice data: they simply don't see any value in it and you'll never get SEO from it.

megaman8··on The problem of shitty software is you because you pay for this shit
the problem is not "me".

We always like to think of consumer choice as being the ultimate determiner for what becomes and stays successful, and that's how it should work. But, it's not actually how it works. With sooo many monopolies out there (at&t/comcast ISP), there's a lot of things where you don't have much consumer choice or no consumer. And when you do have a choice, the cost of switching is super high.

I periodically go through my apps and see which ones are taking up the most disk space/memory/bandwidth/battery life and prune all of the ones above a certain amount.

Guess what all the top 10 have in common: yup, they are all pseudo monopolies. If you think the problem is you, I dare you to go to your top 10 biggest wasters and see if you can find a viable alternative to any of them.

Heck, sometimes, it's literally impossible to delete certain apps: the bloatware that's baked into all our phones. But, people don't seem to mind, some of those app even rate 4 stars out of 5.

And it doesn't help that searching for an app is such a big pain point. When you do finally find an app that meets your criteria, it's tough to find another ones that meets All your requirements.

But, my impression is that, most non-tech people don't care about hings like: disk space, memory, bandwidth or effect on battery life. At least, not enough to measure it or do anything about it. My wife would rather carry along a super heavy dumbbell-weight battery, than look at which apps are draining the most juice.

megaman8··on Ask HN: Did any Show HN posts turn into successful startups?
I would imagine that every successful/not-successful startup would post on Show HN. There are entire lists of places to post stuff, and I'm sure Show HN must be in the top 10.
megaman8··on WeWork Backs Down on Employee Noncompete Requirements
I'm all for reducing meat consumption. But having everyone do a hard and fast rule: no meat whatsover, seems extreme. People grew up with different values and diets. Until we can convince others, I think we should be more accepting of others values and not force everyone to do it one way.
megaman8··on Evernote just slashed 54 jobs, or 15 percent of its workforce
I seem to see this happen quite frequently, it should be a meme.
megaman8··on America is pushing the labour market to its limits
Well, she doesn't have a computer science degree. She's an MBA who's learned SQL, tableau, excel, etc (working at a large company 500+ people). She pulls out data with SQL queries and knows how to use excel inside and out. she's made it all the way to the final interview, but everytime they figure out she had a baby, they assume she's going to have a 2nd one.
megaman8··on America is pushing the labour market to its limits
I wasn't even able to get to the article without using copy and paste trick to view the darn thing in my text editor.
megaman8··on America is pushing the labour market to its limits
What's going on is that there's an oversupply of Skilled labor. They already found someone else. The greater the oversupply, the more qualified candidates they have to reject.

I know one person, she's a data analyst (2 years experience, +5 years of marketing experience) here in the bay area. hasn't been able to get a Data analyst job for 3 years now, even after applying thousands of jobs and interviewing dozens of times. Finally, she was forced to take an after school baby-sitting job for 17$/hour (bay area).

megaman8··on Single-family homes cover almost half of Los Angeles
well there's humane ways to limit growth, and then there's what CA does. If you want to limit growth, then you need to convince companies to move out, get the jobs out of there. once the jobs leave, the people leave. But continuing to have FB and google and various other companies lure more and more people from outside the state to CA and then not building enough housing for everyone, is just plain wrong. Sure, the people coming in can probably afford it, but it causes so many housing problems for everyone else.
megaman8··on $250 Trillion in Debt: The World’s Post-Lehman Legacy
I see no intention from governments of ever paying off that debt. All I see, worldwide and US is more and more spending. At one point in the future we won't be able to pay for it anymore. So, what happens if everyone finds out they're not getting their money back? i hope we never find out.

30% of US debt is owned by intergovernmental agencies: like Social security/medicare/military retirement funds - so that might go down the tubes.

The other 70% of US debt is public debt, of which almost half is owned by foreign governments and investors.

megaman8··on Ask HN: Is it unethical to finish project from a company that never finished it?
People don't get in trouble for doing unethical things. they get in trouble for breaking the rules or doing illegal stuff. what you really need to know is, is it legal? or will it have a negative public relations impact? those are the questions you should be asking.
megaman8··on Google Fiber Is High-Speed Internet’s Most Successful Failure
well, they can always come up with a new estimate. If they'r e not doing it, then it means they can't get a good ROI on it. I'm just wondering what they're biggest expense is: I suspect it's last mile digging up all those trenches - i hear that's really expensive.
megaman8··on The US chip industry starts to wake up to new competitive reality
As a consumer, I'd rather see them make faster hard drives. I think that's a much bigger impact than faster CPUs. I remember when i got my mac book pro 2015. the hard drive was so much faster than 5 years earlier. I can now boot up in less than 20 seconds. and my IDE opens in less then 4 seconds. getting those two numbers down to 1 or less would be a much bigger improvement, IMHO.
