megaloblasto··on Andrew Ng says bottleneck in AI startups isn't coding – it's product management
Damn bro. Deep dive into the comments.

The bad algo was a scaling problem for one equation. That particular equation wasn't some y = mx + b thing, it was the result of a discontinuous galerkin finite element scheme that I wrote from scratch. The actual equation was one that I found after about 2 pages of hand written derivations with high level math. Not really a coding issue, just an algebra issue after really intense manipulations of partial differential equations.

The fact that AI found that problem, a problem that could only be found by someone able to do complex manipulations of PDEs is incredible to me. Perhaps I didn't tell the story well in the past comment, but it isn't like I didn't know python syntax and AI held my hand.

I don't post repos because I keep my hacker news life separate from my personal life, and my repos are tied to my name.

Most major software companies are demanding that their employees use AI, so you should be able to look at any open repo from Google, Microsoft, Facebook, etc for examples of AI use in code.

There are a lot of different niches to software development. It could be that your specific niche isn't seeing much benefit yet. However, continuing to hold onto a view that AI is hype garbage could very possibly hurt your career in the near future.

I'll bet he's strong enough to push nails into wood so he never uses a hammer.
megaloblasto··on Andrew Ng says bottleneck in AI startups isn't coding – it's product management
I'm speaking just to coding productivity. I think AI does very little for business development or creativity type issues.

People should realize that denying that AI can boost productivity in coding makes it look like they don't know how to use it, or believe in some conspiracy that no one is actually benefitting and it's all market hype from tech bros.

megaloblasto··on Andrew Ng says bottleneck in AI startups isn't coding – it's product management
Many people are seeing huge gains in coding productivity with AI. If you're not one of those people it might be useful to evaluate why you aren't experiencing any benefits, instead of claiming that there are none.

The math for the $20,000 is in my first post. $60 a paper times 365 days a year is $21,900 and I rounded down.

I don't have an example of a $60 paper (I don't keep a list) but below is a $42 paper and a $35 paper that I came across very recently.

https://library.seg.org/doi/epub/10.1190/geo2023-0525.1

https://www.dl.begellhouse.com/journals/52034eb04b657aea,442...

This is prohibitively expensive for the majority of the world.

Remember that the global average annual salary is around $18,000 (https://www.bbc.com/news/magazine-17512040).

These people cannot access science that is behind a paywall. The fact that they cannot is a failure. Whether its a moral failure, or an economic or a societal one, I'm not sure, but I do believe that providing free access to scientific advancements it the right thing to do.

$20,000 annually to keep up on the latest science makes it prohibitively expensive for most of the world to do meaningful science. If only the rich can do science then we miss out on crucial scientific advancements. Less scientific advancements means less people get life saving medicines, less environmental disasters are uncovered and dealt with.

Plus, I was just using your own logic of replacing "paper" with anything else that I might consume in my everyday life.

That's what I tell diabetic patients struggling to afford insulin. "Hey that's the price, that's just how it is, if you don't like it, don't buy it"

I still had the same problem as a student at a major state school in the usa. Most schools don't subscribe to all the journals. I think I had IEEE and a few more, but more of the time they were paywalled.

I have to read a lot of papers for work. Sometimes 2 or 3 a day. Often when I find one I'm interested in, they want $60 to read the one paper. If I have to read one paper a day, that's about $20,000 a year just to stay up to date with the science.

That's ridiculous. Thankfully someone is breaking down these barriers to science.

Very interesting. Reminds me of 2001 a space odyssey when the pilot unplugs parts of Hals brain in order to regain control over the ship.

How does a pilot switch between the three modes? Just switches on the dash?

This is a very hot take that I've never seen expressed before. The subtle use of words has a major impact on society and the people in it.
megaloblasto··on DOGE Put Critical Social Security Data at Risk, Whistle-Blower Says
Sort of off topic but this reminds me of a Hunter S Thompson quote I read yesterday about the Nixon administration

"Meanwhile, the Vice president of the United States has been lashed out of office and disbarred in his home state of Maryland, the president himself is teetering on the bring of a Burglary/Conspiracy indictment that will mean certain impeachment, and the whole structure of our government has become a stagnant mockery of itself and everybody who ever had faith in it"

People who use amazon are part of the misguided masses.
megaloblasto··on How can AI ID a cat?
The implicit idea in your comment that there is no important work in low GDP countries reminds me of this quote:

"I am, somehow, less interested in the weight and convolutions of Einstein's brain than in the near certainty that people of equal talent have lived and died in cotton fields and sweatshops"

I think you are giving too much credit to billion dollar companies that really just want to milk as much labor from poor countries as they can.

megaloblasto··on How can AI ID a cat?
It definitely sounds like you're trying to excuse the labor exploitation of multinational corporations. I was just pointing out that the network doesn't figure out how to classify things without a massive human undertaking. Are you suggesting that if something is common across the globe then we shouldn't complain about it?
megaloblasto··on How can AI ID a cat?
This is a nice article but it fails to mention something important. Beyond the computer magic that makes neural networks so powerful, there is a massive human effort, often from people in Sub-Saharan Africa, that spend all day labeling images, text, audio, etc for the major AI companies [1]. These workers are often exploited and treated as expendable.

It's not all just math. Real people are what make this work.

megaloblasto··on The ROI of Exercise
True, however I know a lot of people over 60 who think that walking alone is sufficient. You need to strength train too. Train your abs and at least do body squat variations. Walking is great to lose weight and keep your heart healthy, but not sufficient in itself.

megaloblasto··on The Lives and Loves of James Baldwin
James Baldwin was born in 1924. Language changes a lot in 100 years. He is one of the greatest American authors and has a very intentional use of words. In this case, perhaps the use of her is supposed to convey an intimacy with his relationship to the country as more than just an object, but as a integral part of his lived experience.
megaloblasto··on The Lives and Loves of James Baldwin
"I love America more than any other country in the world and, exactly for this reason, I insist on the right to criticize her perpetually"

If you've read James Baldwin you can recognize how powerful it is for him to say that.

megaloblasto··on Microsoft keeps adding stuff into Windows we don't need
I'm pointing out that Hacker news has a lot of members that get very upset if you suggest using Linux when they complain about Windows. I think meta commentary about the platform is valid, especially since the platform is just posts and comments.

That meta commentary was part of the substance of my comment. And it relates to the article.

To be more specific, I feel strongly against people who defend Microsoft, and their massively immoral actions like their military ties, and invasion of privacy.

I think these people defend Microsoft largely because they are used to it, therefore have a bias towards it, and because they feel attacked when linux users point out that they are supporting an evil megacorporation.

It's sort of like how members of one religion often feel attacked by the mere existence of people who follow other religions, or no religion at all.

I think that people with sufficient technical capability shouldn't support microsoft, and should use open source software.

megaloblasto··on Microsoft keeps adding stuff into Windows we don't need
You're looking for MacOS. Linux is for people who want full control over their system and no Steve Jobs character telling them what they want.
