medo-bear··on Cognitive load is what matters
I would rather take on a lisp job that pays my bills than a Java job that pays my bills + upgrades my car
medo-bear··on Cognitive load is what matters
This requirement has become a meme. I can do more on a project alone (spanning several new for me domains) with lisp than I can with a group of 5 or 10 in any other language
medo-bear··on Cognitive load is what matters
It works the other way too. Ive seen plenty of code with strict typing that could have its cognitive load reduced greatly by dynamic typing. A far bigger problem is hidden sideffects and static typing does nothing to fix that
medo-bear··on C++ is an absolute blast

medo-bear··on Compiling C to Safe Rust, Formalized
The article talks about compiling formalized C code to Rust. While interesting from a tinkering perspective, I fail to see any significant utility in safety, security, readability, popularity and ease of language. Can you please educate me as to what I am missing
medo-bear··on Ask HN: Programmers who don't use autocomplete/LSP, how do you do it?
LSP enables you to program as you go along, without ever understanding the structure of the whole program. If you don't want to use an LSP you pretty much must understand the whole program you are adding code to

> Like e.g. in Java it was common to have a comment on a simple (!) setter, telling you "this sets X"

Given the prevelance of mutating functions in Java this is welcome

medo-bear··on Compiling C to Safe Rust, Formalized
Correcting what though ?

> I don't see much overhype coming from Rust practitioners

That is like saying I don't see much overhype about AI from machine learning engineers. I am a ml engineer, and like myself great majority of ml engineers will tell you that there is certainly overhype about the field and do not engage in the overhype. Which is not to say that the field isnt producing some really cool results

> I've yet to see people (incorrectly) extend this to a claim that Rust solves all security problems, which would meet the definition of overhype.

Ive seen plenty of questionable Rust rewrites due to solving security problems

> Python is a great rapid development language

Saying to a Lisper that Python is a great rapid development language is like selling Rust safety to an Ada person :)

medo-bear··on Compiling C to Safe Rust, Formalized
Its sunday, shouldnt you be in church of holy borrow checker?
medo-bear··on Compiling C to Safe Rust, Formalized
> although they may be subject to misunderstanding about their exact extent

Isnt that what overhype means? Also no one is saying that Rust is unique in being overhyped. It is true of almost any language worth writing in, including c, lisp, python, haskell, type script etc.

medo-bear··on Compiling C to Safe Rust, Formalized
so many powerful words lol
medo-bear··on Compiling C to Safe Rust, Formalized
you feeling the need to defend it at every jibe. chill. rust is not a cult
medo-bear··on Compiling C to Safe Rust, Formalized
Your tendency to answer jokes so seriously is a symptom of the hype
medo-bear··on Compiling C to Safe Rust, Formalized
As Tesla is to Tesla
medo-bear··on Compiling C to Safe Rust, Formalized
The point, I think, was that "safety" presumptions about Rust are often exaggerated or poorly misunderstood due to hype. That could certainly lead to problems
medo-bear··on Compiling C to Safe Rust, Formalized
Good luck with both of that. Otherwise people whose dayjob is rewritting everything in Rust will soon be out of a job
medo-bear··on Compiling C to Safe Rust, Formalized
I think a disclaimer like this should be written with every Rust application, like health warnings on cigarette packets
medo-bear··on Compiling C to Safe Rust, Formalized
What is the benefit of compiling formally correct code to Rust? It seems that all the possible benefits are already there (if not more)
medo-bear··on Compiling C to Safe Rust, Formalized
So no?
medo-bear··on Haskell vs. Ada vs. C++ vs. an Experiment in Prototyping Productivity (1994) [pdf]
TLDR: "Haskell vs Ada vs C++" but a lisp wins in development hours by huge margin

I wonder if this is the 'relational lisp' in question

It is even funnier when you swap dillo for dildo in the comments
medo-bear··on 25 Years of Dillo
I misread this as 25 Years of Dildo
medo-bear··on Boltzmann brain
Taking scientific knowledge to their weird limits might also signal something perhaps more likely: a missing puzzle in our knowledge
medo-bear··on Tree Calculus
> Lisp is based on lambda calculus which has no tools to modify programs written in itself

Lisp is not based on lambda calculus and lisp can certainly modify programs written in itself

medo-bear··on Just Say No to JavaScript
someone once said something to me that stuck: computers are stupid. they do exactly and only what you tell them
medo-bear··on Just Say No to JavaScript
The difference in parenting styles to raising good programmers in extremes like Rust and Common Lisp seems to be one of spanking and being a friend

medo-bear··on Just Say No to JavaScript
Meanwhile in lisp world no one really cries about type errors. I wonder why
medo-bear··on Just Say No to JavaScript
At that point sir you would have no job. Your job is logic safety
