meddlepal··on Covid pushes Asia to embrace big government
> but I do think the needed response to fully control the spread of a virus creates perverse incentives for governments. Especially governments that would like to disrupt other countries which have cultures that don't like to be told what to do by their own government.

China, Russia and every other country has been given a wonderful blueprint for absolutely disrupting the US and really entire western order. The fact nobody seems to be talking about the national security implications of this virus and what our rivals or enemies have learned is frightening.

Can you imagine how fucked things would get if another virus struck the US right after we deal with Covid?

So we can return to a world of conventional warfare amongst powerful counties? Worked out great for WWI and WWII.

Ill take nuclear deterrence any day over that hell.

cherry-pick is frequently used if you have maintenance branches that need changes from master.
meddlepal··on Moderna Covid vaccine candidate almost 95% effective, trials show
Im all for setting up the equivalent of leprosy colonies for anti-vax folks that want to be left alone. They can be left to their own devices and free to live without vaccinations away from the rest of us.
meddlepal··on The total PC market (including tablets) had 23% year-on-year growth
A desktop is only a premium experience if you're an engineer of some sort and really need the horsepower...

Just about everyone else on the planet sees a desktop as a huge space waster.

meddlepal··on How Go helped save HealthCare.gov
As others have noted, this is one of the areas Go really shines at (and I am not a Go fan). The lack of language features really forces most code into a limited form of TOOWTDI and because it has pretty opinionated choices about loops, conditionals, errors etc... you really don't see much Go code that makes you scratch your head.
meddlepal··on How to Dual-Boot Ubuntu 20.04 and Windows 10 with Encryption
Wat? I play games all the time on my Windows 10 + WSL2 setup.... which is exactly as I described: Windows running as a guest under Hyper-V alongside Linux.
meddlepal··on How to Dual-Boot Ubuntu 20.04 and Windows 10 with Encryption
It's pretty close. Big pain point for me still is that running an IDE from Windows and accessing the Linux FS is not quite as snappy as native-Linux (I use IntelliJ). So for now I still dual-boot.

This is apparently being worked on... in the future I will be able to run the IDE inside WSL and it will bridge X11/Wayland to Windows.

Serious question: Why? Being outdoors is quite safe.
meddlepal··on Apache Helix – Near-Realtime Rsync Replicated File System
Please elaborate on those "limitations".

I really haven't seen all that much XML in Java recently outside of legacy applications... there's libraries for loading config data from JSON, YAML, etc etc.

meddlepal··on Nearly 12M Square Feet of Vacant Office Space in S.F
> [...] due to cost and structural constraints of office

You forgot to read the rest of the sentence including the very important “due to cost”.

No shit we can technically do it and have done it.

meddlepal··on Nearly 12M Square Feet of Vacant Office Space in S.F
Which is more or less what I said in my comment...
meddlepal··on Nearly 12M Square Feet of Vacant Office Space in S.F
I feel like comments like this often lack perspective. Upstate NY, especially Buffalo and Rochester have plenty of things to do in them and far more than five restaurants.

It strikes a nerve with me because in Massachusetts a similar sentiment is expressed by Boston-Cambridge folks about Lowell, Worcester, and other periphery cities. Its simply mot true that these places are devoid of culture snd cuisine and in the age of Yelp and Google Maps it takes almost no time to find it.

meddlepal··on Nearly 12M Square Feet of Vacant Office Space in S.F
Ive been told in a lot if cases this is virtually impossible due to cost and structural constraints of office construction vs residential... notably ceiling heights, plumbing and floor plans are poorly designed for residential conversion.

meddlepal··on Intel Core I7 1165G7 “Tiger Lake” Linux Performance with Dell XPS 13 9310
I've owned T5xx and T4xx in the same timeframe, they're also high quality.

Im not sure the X1 Extreme is part of the biz line... it's marketed at gaming or more accurately people that want a Work/Play device.

I think the lesson here is:

1. Don't get involved with VC's unless you want to take on all the problems VC's bring as they force you to chase hypergrowth.

2. VC's frame success as hypergrowth and 10-100x multiplier exits.

3. Hypergrowth is not the pinnacle of success.

meddlepal··on Intel Core I7 1165G7 “Tiger Lake” Linux Performance with Dell XPS 13 9310
The fragility of Dell's consumer laptops is why I continue to buy Lenovo's which are less sleek but have better durability and run Linux just fine. In recent memory I've had an X1 Carbon and X1 Carbon Extreme Gen 1 and been very satisfied.

meddlepal··on WSL2 – Installation Tutorial for Graphical Windows Subsystem on Linux

meddlepal··on WSL2 – Installation Tutorial for Graphical Windows Subsystem on Linux
I tried it, I work with IntelliJ primarily and the performance was painful working with Windows IntelliJ and accessing Linux files.
meddlepal··on WSL2 – Installation Tutorial for Graphical Windows Subsystem on Linux
Once Microsoft's native WSL GUI integration is in place I am probably going to abort using Fedora as my primary and just use Windows. I've been avoiding WSL because the Windows to WSL FS performance wasn't good enough but I think soon that will not be a problem.

I'm just not seeing a good reason to stay Linux-native and I've been Linux-native for 10+ years now.
