mechhacker··on Fossil is quitting smartwatches
I really like my Garmin Fenix. Got someone else a Garmin Instinct as a gift.

Previously, I got a Samsung and it was a buggy piece of junk. The Garmin has been extremely reliable, getting regularly doused underwater in saltwater when crashing while windsurfing, monitors heart rate, and can be hooked up to a heart rate monitor. And I charge it maybe once a week.

I looked into Apple Watches and I think Fossil too but they didn't seem to fit the bill. Apple has terrible watch battery life. I was able to put my Garmin in low power mode and only use the GPS when recording a few windsurf sessions, and it lasted 2 weeks like that without charging while in Europe.

mechhacker··on Most STEM grads don't work in STEM jobs
As a STEM working remotely in the area of this newspaper, I'd definitely consider a non-stem job that paid more than what I make working remotely...but I haven't seen an obvious opportunity like that.
mechhacker··on Autophage rocket engine consumes plastic fuselage for fuel
I thought there were more examples of hybrid engines?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RocketMotorTwo

Also, I wonder how complex this is going to make the aerodynamic controls. You are losing moment arms between engine and the forward surfaces, if they exist.

mechhacker··on Why don't grocery stores stock pawpaw fruit?
Agreed with what the others said. Kind of like a custard when ripe.

But, what I didn't like was it was overwhelmingly like the worst parts of the flavor of banana, amplified. Maybe it was the ones that I tried and there are other varieties, but that overwhelming banana flavor was what I disliked. Stronger than your regular bananas.

Dug pretty far back to get his older site:

mechhacker··on Why don't grocery stores stock pawpaw fruit?
Man, hadn't heard that name in a while. Looks like he's still around. His twitter points to his homepage, but that looks to have been taken over by someone with the same name. All of his stuff must be on facebook now, shame.
mechhacker··on Why don't grocery stores stock pawpaw fruit?
I tried them when I was living in Ohio and they had the Pawpaw festival.

Not my thing. The ones I had fresh were too weird tasting for me. I did like some of the secondary products like beer or other things made from them, but the fruit themselves, nah.

If they can get them to where other people that like them get to enjoy them though, that's cool.

mechhacker··on Many prehistoric handprints show missing finger. What if this wasn't accidental?
Maybe it was sign language

Or maybe that's how they got the rings off for divorce

mechhacker··on Climbing 50 steps a day can cut your risk of heart disease
I can't comment on heart disease but I recently started adding running. Mostly in the form of running to and from the gym to lift weights, but I will sometimes throw in a 5k, even throwing in something like 7k today.

What I've noticed, when in the past I was a weightlifting maximalist and running minimalist, is that after running I've noticed a large endurance benefit in other sports. For example: windsurf hydrofoiling. In light winds it takes a lot of full body effort to pump the board/foil and sail to get out of the water and flying. I noticed how gassed I could get. After throwing running in the mix my capacity to get going without getting totally gassed has gone up substantially.

I would hope that would also translate into other long term benefits for health (provided I continue to cut back on drinking and improve my diet otherwise...)

mechhacker··on 15 years ago, I helped design Google Maps
They keep breaking zoom too.

The "enhancements" are reminding me of when Evernote went from their original UI to a new one, making everything take at least 3-5x more effort/tapping/clicking and I just gave up on it entirely.

mechhacker··on Children, left behind by suburbia, need better community design
“Why don’t children leave the house?”

I did, until I was at a certain age (roughly early teenager).

Then, there were a bunch of news shows talking about men driving around in brown vans abducting kids. Or kids just smoking pot at the parks.

So I stopped being let to go there without adults. And that's about the time that we got a computer with a modem and I discovered online games...

Wonder if hot staging caused issues with both vehicles or it was two separate issues.
mechhacker··on Starship Integrated Flight Test 2 at 7 Am Central Time
Interesting, did not catch that

Yup, typo
mechhacker··on Starship Integrated Flight Test 2 at 7 Am Central Time
Yeah that was nuts
mechhacker··on Starship Integrated Flight Test 2 at 7 Am Central Time
1st stage turned around then exploded. Second stage is doing well so far.

Edit had the second sentence wrong

mechhacker··on Starship Integrated Flight Test 2 at 7 Am Central Time
So they are trying a boostback. Are they going to try to land it or?

NVM they said they were just going to let it splash.

mechhacker··on Starship Integrated Flight Test 2 at 7 Am Central Time
I'm hoping that this one makes the 2nd stage partial (or full?) orbit. This thing is a gamechanger.
mechhacker··on Unauthorized "David Attenborough" AI clone narrates developer's life, goes viral
When I see a lot of this voice replication I am reminded of something.

(Dune series spoiler)

For example, Duncan Idaho keeps being brought back with cloning tech, over and over, for centuries, because Leto II just likes him. Over and over, the same man keeps being put by the (nearly) immortal emperor's side...

I ask: are we stuck as a monoculture, not making new, interesting things, but simply replicating older ones?

The technology is novel and interesting, but culturally, aside from the concerns about annoying the people being replicated, it seems a bit stuck.

mechhacker··on Kidney stone procedure "has the potential to be game changing"
I narrowed it down to grapefruit. At least that's what I suspect. I avoid them now.
mechhacker··on Kidney stone procedure "has the potential to be game changing"
I've broken bones, including a leg, and a kidney stone was the most painful thing I've experienced.

It was so painful it resulted in a blackout as it was moving through my innards and getting to my bladder. Anything to save myself from that non-invasively would be welcome. Thankfully, they have not returned as I think I know what triggers them for me.

mechhacker··on Citing slow Starship reviews, SpaceX urges FAA to double licensing staff
There are pathways for it to happen. But you need a team of specialized lawyers, training for all employees, controls, etc.

None of this is free.

mechhacker··on Citing slow Starship reviews, SpaceX urges FAA to double licensing staff
I overly simplify it because I need to consult a lawyer any time I deal with it. I do not want to accidentally "export" anything. You need specialized lawyers to deal with this and be compliant, it's not cheap, and I personally default to not chancing it with prison.
mechhacker··on Citing slow Starship reviews, SpaceX urges FAA to double licensing staff
Giving technical details to a foreign citizen is considered an export of ITAR or other restricted information and can get you personally locked in federal prison.
mechhacker··on The midwit home
I installed yale smart locks which work with Nest.

After going through a bunch of pain getting it to initially work, I would go away from anything smart device at all, except for maybe an electric code lock that isn't networked.

It's convenient to not have to always have my keys on me, and I got used to the tech after my previous apartment installed a similar device, but it randomly fails. Or randomly makes me log in to google again (and I have basically only minimal google usage now, no email by them). Or randomly fails when I'm 300 feet away from the house and trying to unlock.

But, at one point I was considering installing a compatible device for the thermostat. It has lost the appeal to me, and the nearly intractable software interface to deal with problems was a big part of it. Getting a second lock up and running took a bunch of arcane knowledge.

mechhacker··on Fastest sailboat: Two wild designs
IIRC Thomas Goyard hit 41kts on the foil, but may not be "official".

The speed canals where they hit really high speeds on fins are in special areas that most people will never be able to experience that have no wind disruptions and are very shallow canals to keep the chop down like in Luderitz, it isn't an open water speed: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jt3DQNUJXkc

The races, which have fin and foil against each other, have been in open water state (more real world for 99% of windsurfers), and in those conditions fin vs. foil are very competitive, with foils pulling ahead in the turns due to a lot less resistance and better ability to get back upwind compared to a fin. There's been a lot of debate on even allowing them to compete in the same races as they currently are allowed. They can both do 30ish knots in the same conditions, with the foilers getting away with smaller sails. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jsUDkg2d5tE
