meat_fist··on Ask HN: What do you wear to programming interviews?
The one seems very informal. 34 people, sports management software, I talked to the CTO who opted to fly me out.

The other seems more formal. 70 people, teaching software. The phone screen was with an HR person who was dressed nicely, although she brought up beer a number of times (which was awesome).

I guess my biggest fear is "over" dressing? As in, I'm presumed to not be a cultural fit because I overdress. Gameplan was to dress nicely, but not in a full suit. I might even wear a tie, but a full suit to me seems excessive.

meat_fist··on Ask HN: What do you wear to programming interviews?
I never said it was super lax, and I never said I'd show up in a hoodie and sneakers. Obviously I would dress nicely, a tucked in button-down shirt, nicer pants and shoes, maybe even a tie. I just didn't think a full-suit was a requirement.
meat_fist··on Rebuilding HipChat with React.js
First decide if you need Flux at all. I've seen a lot of "React people" talk about first getting all you can out of React-Router, and eventually if your app gets big enough you'll "feel a need" for something like Flux. If you're doing smaller apps as side projects, you may never even need to implement it.

But if you do, step one is read this: https://reactjsnews.com/the-state-of-flux/

Then pick one and just start playing around.

Is that how permissions work? I was under the impression if you gave the app permissions to read write and delete files in your storage, it could (in theory) read/write/delete anything it wanted?

meat_fist··on Why isn't C used for web development?
Hey! Look at me learning something!

Good info. Thanks.

Not trying to nitpick, but Grails is a Groovy framework.

I agree with your post.

meat_fist··on Tell HN: Take vacation
I usually get unbelievably depressed on the last day of my vacations because it means I have to come back to my awful life.
meat_fist··on People voluntarily leaving jobs at highest rate since 2009 downturn
I hate my job more than anything I've ever hated. Every morning when I wake up I try to figure out if today will be the day that I call in and tell my manager that I can't do this to myself anymore.

My therapist keeps begging me to quit. Ultimately I'm just too afraid of not finding anything else to quit without a new job.

I guess it is nice to know that I am not alone.

meat_fist··on Why I Tried To Kill Myself at Penn
Unless you're the best of the best, or you really care, an ivy-league school isn't going to be great for your quality of life. I know tons of kids that have cracked under the pressures of penn/cornell/etc. Send your kids to smaller, less prestigious school.
meat_fist··on Ask HN: A question about ethics in Computer Science
Are you willing to lose your job for the sake of white-knighting some crappy code?
