mdhen··on The Aldi effect: how one discount supermarket transformed the way Britain shops
Totally different companies now. They do have an agreement to not compete in most countries though. The only countries both are present are Germany and the United States.
mdhen··on US Cities Are Becoming More Dangerous for Cyclists and Pedestrians
This isn't true. I don't think I've ever seen anyone try a right on red in Manhattan and while I'm sure it happens occasionally in the boroughs I really don't ever see it. Not sure what you're talking about
mdhen··on Sobriety startups shaking up the 12-step model
You can either get a new doctor or buy from India.
mdhen··on Sobriety startups shaking up the 12-step model
It is Definitely safe to take with alcohol. Not sure where your seeing that it's not.
mdhen··on Sobriety startups shaking up the 12-step model
You really naltrexone when you drink, and only when you drink. They also advise drinking somewhat frequently at the start so your brain can quickly break the connection between alcohol and having a really good time. Once it is broken you do need to continue using naltrexone every time you want a drink or over time you will go back to being addicted. But it is generic and not expensive to get.
mdhen··on Sobriety startups shaking up the 12-step model
Using the Sinclair method you only take naltrexone when you drink (well just prior to drinking). Not at all times. It's not expensive and it works so so well. In Finland it is the first line treatment option for alcoholism and it's wildly successful.
mdhen··on Apple needs to change iPhone’s call UI because robocalls are killing us
On Samsung phones you can allow texts from noon contact numbers even if you are blocking calls. You also can allow any alarms through.
mdhen··on Self-Driving Cars Can Handle Neither Rain nor Sleet nor Snow
Those conditions sound like you wouldn't be driving. So, solved. Pull over and stop
mdhen··on ProtonMail Hits 5M Accounts
Protonmail would be great with some usability and feature improvements. Right now it has limited support for imap, smtp, pop3. You're basically limited to the biggest desktop clients. The desktop web client is okay.

But the biggest drawback right now that I can see, is mobile. Their app does not support threaded conversations or any of the newer features that we've come to expect because of Gmail. You also can't use a third party app like k9. So for me at least, it's not good enough yet to use as my primary account. Really wish it was though.

mdhen··on Microsoft's undersea datacenter has live webcams now
If I had to guess I would say it's where they're releasing heat. Fish love warm water.
mdhen··on US breaks up IRS phone scam operation
I have do not disturb turned on always, but my contacts are exempt, so for people I know it will ring. If I get a call from a non contact they can leave a voicemail. But most of the time it's a robocall. Not having to deal with my phone ringing all the time has been a big improvement.
mdhen··on The Effect of Cold Showering on Health and Work: A Randomized Controlled Trial
You are really aggressive
mdhen··on "Android ICS already offers more than what is coming in iOS 6"
This is true. My perception of android is definitely affected by the fact that I have a rooted phone and run CM - but for the general populace they'll never be able to take advantage of most things. Which is really unfortunate.
mdhen··on "Android ICS already offers more than what is coming in iOS 6"
Probably because functionality is what counts. who cares how you get there? and one of the upsides of Android having open development is that features will get built in more rapidly via third parties.
mdhen··on HBO Says No, for Now, to Fans Who Want a Web-Only Option
If they have cable, and they're pirating - you would be correct. It would however be incorrect to assume that someone who doesn't want to pay 80 dollars a month before being allowed to pay for HBO would pirate it if given the chance to just pay for HBO directly.
mdhen··on Bill Murray on taking chances and saying "No"
He doesn't have an agent. so . . it's possible.
mdhen··on Self-driving Volvos cover 200km of busy Spanish motorway
They probably had drivers at the wheel to get around that.
mdhen··on Why I'm thrilled Mark Zuckerberg is annoying the bankers
Same concept applies to dress shoes - Allen Edmonds and Aldens will last years to decades if properly maintained. You will need to replace the soles periodically, but that is not expensive.
mdhen··on Physicist cuts plane boarding time in half
I think Southwest definitely has the best system for this (numbered pillars to line up at), although it doesn't really apply to seating arrangements since SW is random seating.

Although that seems like a bonus as the random seating was the second best method.
