Reacts insistence at the time on everyone should use hooks was hands down one of the dumbest things I’ve seen in all my time.
Not only was it on extremely shaky grounds technically but now you have huge swaths of developers have this extremely React specific mental model of building apps that translates poorly to almost everything else out there.
There is a reason why almost nobody else out there followed that trend. Classes are actually the ideal abstraction for building a component based on UI.
I cannot for the life of me understand why anyone would intentionally pick it in 2025 unless there were serious constraints that forced them to.
I’m open to the possibility of faster, cheaper and smaller (we saw an instance of that with deepseek) but think there’s a real chance we hit a wall elsewhere.
Actual real life case studies that people can point to where they deployed it and it all went great are actually very hard to come by. It was only the other week that there was that study that said the number was as low as I think they said like 5% or something.
No shortage of excitement though, but a lot of things seem to be riding on some big breakthroughs coming down the pipeline that may never arrive.
If you have a problem set where some mistakes are tolerable however, all you need to do is slightly increase your tolerance budget for mistakes and you can run something like deepseek locally at a tiny fraction of the cost.
Which means these giant data centers are useful for training but the economics of running ongoing inference for customers doesn’t make long term sense for the vast majority of people.
Which leaves you with a huge huge huge financial problem, one which may have devastating large scale impacts on the economy.
It’s a bit ironic in the sense that the EXACT logic of what you’re saying here is precisely what makes it such an ideal thing to target.
I think sometimes people put way too much faith into the concept of open source as being some kind of meaningful shield against attacks like this. Like absolutely nobody in an intel background for example who does stuff like this for a living would agree with you.
It only ever needs to look plausible and I don’t think it’s all that complicated a problem to come up with a reason as to why you’re introducing some code that is suddenly very focused on reading mouse sensor data.
What is unreasonable is turning up in a discussion and saying either none of that pre-existing material counts for nothing or that I shouldn’t have to do any work here and instead you should “debate me bro”.
But I’m happy to be proved wrong so why don’t you go ahead and show me by giving your best faith interpretation as to why you think someone might call him a fascist.
As a side note, when Apple finally gets their shit together WebTransport is excellent for most socket like use cases.
What on earth do you think is going to happen when you suddenly help them not rely on your infrastructure anymore.
There is no way in hell you could ever trust Trump to pick up the phone if you needed help. This is blackmail from a position of weakness from the US here.
