mdewinter··on Paperwork: An open source Evernote alternative
How is this different than Wallabag? (http://wallabag.org/) Wallabag is mature, has mobile apps, self hosted or on their servers and allows you to export stuff as PDF, epub or json.
mdewinter··on Arch Linux on MacBook Pro Retina 2014
x240 here as well, except for (documented on the arch wiki) boot grub parameters for the acpi (brightness, suspend etc) it all works out of the box. Battery life with the extended 2 batteries is about 9 hours.
mdewinter··on VNC Roulette
Is the database available somewhere? I can imagine that some providers want to scan for their ranges to inform their users. The following is time-consuming:

    $ while true; do curl -sk https://srsly.de | html2text | awk '/Address/ {print $2}' | tee -a vnsservers; done
    $ sort -u vncservers | wc -l
    3128
mdewinter··on Show HN: Simple monitoring service
This is fun:

$ curl ping.gg/monitoring@me.com/127.0.0.1 [ ok ] Ping alert created for host '127.0.0.1' and email 'monitoring@me.com'. Check your email to activate it.

mdewinter··on Possible upcoming attempts to disable the Tor network
Do note that XS4ALL is owned by KPN, which is a monolith like Comcast or Verizon. If the authorities come knocking hard enough, KPN will make sure it it shut down, or worde. XS4ALL is a good provider, I enjoy my IPv6 and fiber to home very much, service is good, they still provide a shell server which I use for IRC, I like them

I do however have my doubts about KPN...

mdewinter··on Show HN: Simple monitoring service
Very simple and very nice, how cool! Good job.

I would also like to see it open. I'd love to host something like this for my own networks which are not internet reachable.

mdewinter··on Ask HN: How much traffic to expect if your project hits HN front page?
Been on the frontpage a few times, mostly weekends. 2/3 days got me 30,000 to 60,000 hits/day (24h) per time. My website is static, optimized and hosted on a cluster of geo-spread nodes so they were still doing nothing, the statistics server (piwik) did have a load of 4 at peak...

I'm not commenting on what happend there. It is more than horrible. However, there is a train involved, with High res pictures. macabre train porn, lets say.

mdewinter··on Ask HN: 6 months later, DigitalOcean still Sucks... Why do you use them?
Gentoo with grsecurity for example, but also just experimenting. For example, with kernel compiling. Booting Ubuntu 12.04 from a 14.04 kernel is always fun. Or, to run Arch. They are deprecating Arch now because of high maintenance, but that is just because they use images instead of letting the OS boot its own kernel...
mdewinter··on Ask HN: 6 months later, DigitalOcean still Sucks... Why do you use them?
That's the same thing I have... They promise a lot, however the only new thing added is a HTML 5 console and some Ubuntu 14.04 images. Oh, and 2 new datacenters, which do not apply to me... But come on, it is really not that hard...
mdewinter··on Ask HN: 6 months later, DigitalOcean still Sucks... Why do you use them?
Using a deployment/orchestration framework like Ansible or Chef allows you to define the server setup once and roll it out many times everywhere. You might want to take a look at that.
mdewinter··on Ask HN: 6 months later, DigitalOcean still Sucks... Why do you use them?
What do you consider "anything serious"?
mdewinter··on Ask HN: 6 months later, DigitalOcean still Sucks... Why do you use them?
The tutorials work on any VPS probably. And, the load balancer part, you can build that yourself with a boatload of solutions like haproxy, nginx and whatnot...
mdewinter··on Ask HN: 6 months later, DigitalOcean still Sucks... Why do you use them?
IPv6 is the future. Even DO will run out of IPv4 addresses eventually, then what? I have Ipv6 at home, it suprises me how many sites are available over Ipv6... Just not my DO projects...
mdewinter··on Ask HN: SMS vs Push Message?
Not everybody has a smartphone, your target might be more than just techies, so an SMS would be good. Also, choice. Give people the option to choose an email, push message, text and whatever else. Choice is important!
