mdavid626··on In memory of the man who put red and green squiggles under words
Oh yeah - typical American thinking behind it. Everybody knows English and only uses one language.
mdavid626··on Meta Pauses Employee-Tracking Program Following Internal Data Leak
I had a friend working there - he didn't make that much in senior roles.
mdavid626··on Meta Pauses Employee-Tracking Program Following Internal Data Leak
I don't think they pay you that much in Berlin. Why would they? All other companies pay less - no competition what so ever. Paying >100k is already super good, so they do probably around that.
mdavid626··on Meta Pauses Employee-Tracking Program Following Internal Data Leak
Crying in Germany with 60-85k average SW engineer salary.
mdavid626··on Prefer duplication over the wrong abstraction (2016)
Exactly!
mdavid626··on Prefer duplication over the wrong abstraction (2016)
Of course, in theory this is true. In practice people tend to avoid ANY duplication no matter what. Especially junior developers, as if duplication would be the root of all evil.
mdavid626··on When I reject AI code even if it works
I haven’t seen any useful AI code review so far.
mdavid626··on Alice is impatient
I don’t remember any service I used in the last couple of years, where I thought to myself: this service is really fast and responsive. Great experience.

Quite the contrary: feels like everything got worse. Sometimes painfully slow, buggy and unreliable.

mdavid626··on When I reject AI code even if it works
The problem is if your coworkers don’t do it this way.
mdavid626··on Windows 11 25H2 – I'm so happy to not be using this
I couldn’t agree more. Windows 11 is pure garbage.
mdavid626··on Claude: Elevated errors across many models [resolved]
What are you talking about?

Did you even use pi.dev?

I used them both and I can tell you there isn’t a single feature what pi.dev misses from Claude Code.

mdavid626··on Leaked OpenAI financials show $38.5B loss and compute burn
Feels like fraud to me. Everything depends on exponential growth. “Trust me, bro”
mdavid626··on Claude: Elevated errors across many models [resolved]
Or pi.dev - also super fast and simple.

Claude Code is sluggish, buggy, slow. Typical big enterprise garbage. The only good thing at Anthropic are the models.

mdavid626··on SpaceX to buy Cursor for $60B
Is that profits or revenue? :-)
mdavid626··on Windows 11 users are tired of MS account requirements creeping into everything
The new taskbar was written by an intern on his first day using Copilot in Javascript. Zero fucks were given that day.
mdavid626··on Ferrari Luce
Hyundai is awesome! Ferrari is ugly.
mdavid626··on Ferrari Luce
Ugly as hell, it doesn’t look like a Ferrari.
mdavid626··on PHP's Oddities
If I have an “array” and can do array[0] to get first item, but when I filter this array and array[0] throws an error, that’s super weird. What is the meaning of [] or what is an array even? The language forces me to understand how it is implemented under the hood. That’s exactly what the author says: leaky abstraction.
mdavid626··on OpenAI is connecting ChatGPT to bank accounts via Plaid
What’s the worst can happpen?
mdavid626··on Why senior developers fail to communicate their expertise
I feel you. Similar experience on my side. I think it might've been like this before, but AI coding tools made it worse. Everybody thinks they can do it better - when there is a problem, the coding agent can just fix it. Why bother building relationships with senior devs or with anybody?

Looking deeper into it: these people don't understand the underlying foundations anymore. Just keep building fast, without building proper mental models (that would take time).

mdavid626··on Today I've made the difficult decision to reduce the size of Coinbase by ~14%
What about the actual users?

If this works for you, go ahead, I can't stop you.

But this is not software craftsmanship, or even software engineering. Don't act like it is.

mdavid626··on Meta's embrace of AI is making its employees miserable
...and at the end of the 9 pages you'll be added to the list of employes to let go next time layoff happen.
mdavid626··on Ask HN: We just had an actual UUID v4 collision...
Or there is some other explanation, eg. somebody messed with the request manually, or with the db.
mdavid626··on Show HN: Tilde.run – Agent Sandbox with a Transactional, Versioned Filesystem
Just enable versioning in S3?
mdavid626··on Today I've made the difficult decision to reduce the size of Coinbase by ~14%
Shipping garbage.
mdavid626··on Buckets and objects are not enough
Store key to the item in a database. Then you can query it however you want.

I could imagine it though that S3 could offer something similar. We can already list the bucket items, why not add some of querying ability?

mdavid626··on Windows quality update: Progress we've made since March
Not sure what you mean. I’ve never used any AI features in a terminal.
mdavid626··on Windows quality update: Progress we've made since March
So, to sum it up:

DirectX 12, better SSD support, HDR, restoring window layout when reconnecting monitors, WPA3, DNS over HTTPS, WSL2, Windows Sandbox, per monitor DPI scaling, QUIC, dark mode/tabs/previous session/better encoding in Notepad, Windows Terminal.

All these sound really nice to be honest. The things I want my OS to get.

The only problem is: these are the improvements what this OS got in the last 20 years, not last year. Microsoft is a $3T company.

mdavid626··on Windows quality update: Progress we've made since March
I never said they are. I just stated, they are better than Windows Terminal.
mdavid626··on Windows quality update: Progress we've made since March
WSL sounded great, until it didn’t.

It’s still not so easy to use, plus they ditched it anyway for VM solution.
