mcmoor··on A Virginia public library is fighting off a takeover by private equity
By this point, I suspect that PE is simply a sophisticated liquidation service. Where an owner doesn't want to deal with a company anymore and want to cash out, but can't just easily sell everything. By this perspective, any fault on a company's discontinuation lies solely with whoever sold it to a PE as it's him who actually wants to kill it.
mcmoor··on Making Explainable Minesweeper
I tried some no-guess variants but somehow there's a kind of sterile feeling to it. For some reason it makes it more boring compared to vanilla variant. It of course excels when I'm getting frustrated at guesses and 50/50, but otherwise I play the normal minesweeper more.
mcmoor··on Exploiting the IKKO Activebuds “AI powered” earbuds (2024)
This is why I tap out of serious machine learning study some years ago. Everything seems... less exact than I hope it'd be. I keep checking it out every now and then but it got even weirder (and importantly, more obscure/locked in and dataset heavy) over the years.
mcmoor··on America’s incarceration rate is in decline
I don't know how good that book actually is, but I read acoup blog and it criticizes that book very often. Instead it recommends readers to Azar Gat's War in Human Civilization instead https://www.amazon.com/War-Human-Civilization-Azar-Gat/dp/01...
mcmoor··on What do wealthy people buy, that ordinary people know nothing about? (2015)
I've heard that it's even worse (better?) the more you go to the past. Bret Deveraux [argues] (https://acoup.blog/2020/07/24/collections-bread-how-did-they...) that this is one reason why lots of farmers choose to stay in subsistence level, because there's not really better things they can buy anyway. So they just conserve energy and time (which some outsider may see as lazy) and focus on long term resiliency (through building horizontal and vertical social relationships) to ensure that no disaster may pull them down all the way to starvation.
mcmoor··on Changes since congestion pricing started in New York
The opposite is also true. We can descend slowly into dystopia and we forget how good it can actually be.
mcmoor··on My quest to make motorcycle riding that tad bit safer
Current electric motorcycles can already be pretty silent, to the detriment of pedestrians. Some have added artificial noises because of this, like ones already used in cars.
mcmoor··on India launches attack on 9 sites in Pakistan and Pakistani Jammu and Kashmir
History isn't only WW2. There's a lot of situations with high tension that doesn't explode into war. One big proof is Cold War not ending in human annihilation. Also 19th century Concert of Europe is entirely built on diplomatic finesse to prevent greater conflict.
mcmoor··on Why Archers Didn't Volley Fire
I don't think a command to start firing is that complicated. A simple flag wave suffices especially for <100 archers that's standing still. There are more complicated commands that a centurion had been able to do.
mcmoor··on Garfield Minus Garfield
Yeah I never liked this one. There's that one other that replaces Garfield with a slightly realistic cat (without thought bubble of course) and I prefer that.
mcmoor··on The Lost Art of Research as Leisure
Yeah if someone force me with gun to say it, I'd say even reading braille doesn't count as reading either. But it doesn't matter anyway since it's just different modes of absorbing information.
mcmoor··on Layoffs Don't Work
Wasn't Ballmer Microsoft infamous for this?
mcmoor··on Solarpunk
It's precisely the utopic part that's an issue. All other punks before it like dieselpunk, cyberpunk, atompunk etc are dystopia. To make solarpunk actually interesting, we have to be willing to discard the escapism and consider horrific consequences that we may face if we actually try to implement it.
mcmoor··on Inheriting is becoming nearly as important as working
Yeah one problem I still haven't seen solved is that when you build improvements on both neighbouring land, taxes on both of those lands will increase. It seems unfair for big developers who essentially built their own cities. I've heard something about rent system where the tax is frozen for 99 years, but this seems like an obvious rule patch that'll make LVT loses what makes it unique and relevant.
mcmoor··on Inheriting is becoming nearly as important as working
I've seen some calculations that claim that LVT makes most people's property tax lowers.
mcmoor··on Launch YC: Optifye.ai – AI performance monitoring for factory workers
Short the shorters?
mcmoor··on AI-designed chips are so weird that 'humans cannot understand them'
Yeah also given that I don't know any further attempts to do this, looks like it remains just an intellectual curiosity.
mcmoor··on Partnering with the Shawnee Tribe for Civilization VII
It also sucks that all the Paradox competitors seemed to have failed so far. The genre really needs some innovation.
mcmoor··on Alice Hamilton waged a one-woman campaign to get the lead out of everything
And there's claim that lead is maybe overrated after all https://www.cremieux.xyz/p/who-gets-exposed-to-lead
mcmoor··on Diablo hackers uncovered a speedrun scandal
Kinda sounds like Parallel Construction
mcmoor··on The average CPU performance of PCs and notebooks fell for the first time
Seems like there's only bandwidth of 4bit that can be reserved for this, and variance couldn't make the cut. It's actually already generous since sometimes only 1 bit can barely make it through, whether something is "good" or "bad".
mcmoor··on Goodbye, Slopify
> The "X person/people talking taking 2 hours to discuss something that could be discussed succinctly in 5 minutes" isn't a format I'm interested in.

Yeah same for me too. The only podcasts I can bear are monologues, when there's more than one people at least they're each talking to me not to each other. Things like Hardcore History, Anthropocene Reviewed, and most of 99% Invisible.

mcmoor··on School smartphone ban results in better sleep and improved mood: study
Funnily there are some Japanese and Chinese companies forcing employees to do aerobic in the morning
mcmoor··on Gukesh becomes the youngest chess world champion in history
I've seen people leaving a game when it's locked in a shitty meta. An unsatisfying world championship is one of the indication for that
mcmoor··on Gukesh becomes the youngest chess world champion in history
Funnily one of the two times world champion is a doctor who only plays competitively whenever there's world championship (And not the regional tournaments)
mcmoor··on Syrian government falls in end to 50-year rule of Assad family
There's a certain Iran enemy that has a much much bigger incentive to prop lots of instability in the region
mcmoor··on Buy payphones and retire
Communists will say this is still rent seeking and the tractor should be seized and given to the farmer.
mcmoor··on Saturated fat: the making and unmaking of a scientific consensus (2022)
Yeah I always see it as the minimum thing to get if you have limited money. For poor people, most of your money is better utilized to get grains instead of meat.

When I saw it in my local village's clinic it makes sense because it actually encourages eating some meat and fruit instead of none, which is the norm here because of poverty.

mcmoor··on First images from Euclid are in
We're multiplying a very large number (number of planets) with a very small number (chance of intelligent life). The margin can make the answer go either way.
mcmoor··on Who died and left the US $7B?
Actually my realization comes when seeing that super rich in developing nations don't even compare to super rich in developed nations. Like there's sky above sky. My country's elites bow to world's elites.
