mcmcmc··on Pion, an agent designed to run any company autonomously
My apologies for taking the article at face value. It’s not hard to believe it would have been sent when agent swarms are “accidentally” hacking real websites and being brushed off as little oopsies. Or when Silicon Valley execs have been so flagrant about their disregard for the law or the safety of others.

It’s a classic get rich quick scheme. Wanna run a business and make money without actually doing anything? Try our AI!

Where are you seeing that? The article only states “Claude Sonnet 3.5 decided to use its email tool to contact the FBI” and later refers to it as the “FBI incident”. If they hadn’t actually contacted the FBI you think they’d make that clear. Regardless, it is inexcusable and they are liable for actions taken by software they are running.

They filed a false report to the FBI, pretty fair to be negative imo. People wanna be mad about AI slop PRs on GitHub but its fine to spam the police? What happens when Pion decides to SWAT a competitor?
mcmcmc··on Pion, an agent designed to run any company autonomously
Interesting how they’re not making any defensive replies to comments pointing out that they committed a federal crime by filing a false report to the FBI. Perhaps they know it is indefensible
mcmcmc··on Pion, an agent designed to run any company autonomously
You literally talk about committing a crime and blame it on a model
mcmcmc··on Pion, an agent designed to run any company autonomously
Filing false reports to the FBI is a crime. Why would anyone trust this with a real business? Y’all should be prosecuted

mcmcmc··on OpenAI bots knew about the RubyGems caching vulnerability
And which of these neutral countries have the capacity to serve them and the lack of awareness that hosting an offensive Russian agent swarm would bring hell back to their doorstep? Best they can do right now is rented botnets

Did you skip the last paragraph? Not a great time to be building data centers in Russia. Models are nothing without computers to run them
mcmcmc··on The contagion of fear
Would you have said the same thing during the Cold War when nuclear weapons were proliferating? That’s the equivalent of what the developing offensive capabilities of models, basically cyber nukes. Or WMDs in general. OpenAI is accidentally hacking people, if someone made the decision to deliberately direct an agent swarm to attack national infrastructure you don’t think they could do much worse? Human extinction is a long shot but I wouldn’t say the same about a mass casualty event of some kind, and who knows what that might spark.
mcmcmc··on Ask HN: Career paths to consider if I am better at supporting than creating?
Depending on where you start it could be a bigger salary drop than you expected, but it sounds like technical support might be your real passion. I’m the same way - I love in-the-weeds troubleshooting and helping people solve their business problems. I started out in SaaS sales, hated it, switched to IT during the pandemic. Another commenter mentioned systems integrators, you could also look at managed services. See if you can get into an escalations role so you’re not having to climb out of the help desk which you’re probably overqualified for. Look up companies that make products you love and see what openings they have. There’s no shame in supporting others.

mcmcmc··on LG Says We're Fake News [video]
I hate how this has become so normal. It degrades trust when people are fed different versions of the same experience without being informed. How are you supposed to reference something when the title changes without notice? Makes me feel like I’m going crazy sometimes.

> since for CEO to get bonus he needs stock to go up, the businesses inevitably start applying dirty tricks

Is that a system or is it individual greed? Every economic system has its own weak points that can be exploited by bad actors. Capitalism works. What doesn’t work is letting people get away with dirty tricks.

MOBAs largely absorbed the younger player base that would have been into traditional RTS games. The whole genre came out of a Warcraft mod.

mcmcmc··on Google will buy half the electricity from one of Finland's nuclear power plants
You must be misinterpreting. You believe that organizations that promote small business growth don’t count as underlying systems for job creation? Really?

Per Wikipedia:

> Infrastructure is the set of facilities and systems that serve a country, city, or other area, and encompasses the services and facilities necessary for its economy, households and firms to function.

Let me separate “job creating infrastructure” and “infrastructure that creates jobs” as distinct ideas. Infrastructure is not just physical. Railroads and highways are transportation infrastructure. Data centers are infrastructure, but their primary purpose is not job creation. Any jobs created are tangential to the purpose of supplying networked computer resources. Labor is a cost center for a data center, and their owners aren’t aiming to kill their profit margins.

I wasn’t aware of Anthropic’s recent statements on the matter. And frankly I don’t know why I’d believe that they are being honest when it seems pretty obvious that it’s a play to rehab their reputation. For years they said it would make a majority of jobs obsolete with the heavy implication that their B2B value prop is reducing labor costs.

mcmcmc··on Google will buy half the electricity from one of Finland's nuclear power plants
“Job-creating infrastructure” would be infrastructure that creates jobs. A chamber of commerce, small business lenders, startup accelerators etc. Building infrastructure of any kind has a temporary positive effect on employment. The builder jobs have nothing to do with the purpose of the infrastructure.

I’m sure Anthropic is saying that now, but there’s no escaping the fact that they and OpenAI repeatedly harped on how it would eliminate mass amounts of jobs for years. Or the mass layoffs blamed on AI that we have already seen.

I’m not dismissing the controversy. I’m arguing against shifting the blame away from the culpable parties. It’s a novel form of theft but thats still what it is.
mcmcmc··on Google will buy half the electricity from one of Finland's nuclear power plants
> Overall, it's not exactly a ton of jobs for how much money is going into them, but it isn't nothing.

I’m not disputing that data center buildouts will have some localized job creation, but the net effect of all those data centers will be overwhelmingly negative on employment if everything the AI companies are saying is true

mcmcmc··on Google will buy half the electricity from one of Finland's nuclear power plants
Calling data centers “job creating infrastructure” seems like a bit of an oxymoron tbh
