mcfedr··on Opus 4.5 is not the normal AI agent experience that I have had thus far
i like to think of LLMs as random number generators with a filter
mcfedr··on Freight rail fueled a new luxury overnight train startup
Quality of the rails makes a big difference, take the train from Ukraine to Poland and it's suddenly super smooth once you cross over into the EU
mcfedr··on How to have the browser pick a contrasting color in CSS
Choose is a strange word here. There is an algorithm that calculates the color.
mcfedr··on How the US defense secretary circumvents official DoD communications equipment
Why are your police not investigating this? The guy is actively breaking the law
mcfedr··on Company built its own rail terminal in NYC to avoid relying on trucks
Only Americans call trains old fashioned
mcfedr··on All four major web browsers are about to lose 80% of their funding
Do you even remember the IE6 days? - this opinion seems quite widespread but the open web is great for all of us.
mcfedr··on All four major web browsers are about to lose 80% of their funding
I think you are probably right for other reasons

Safari has long lagged on other browsers, Apple would rather it didn't exist but have to keep it ticking over

With less competition they will likely be happy to lag behind even further again

mcfedr··on Fake Nintendo lawyer is scaring YouTubers, and its not clear YouTube can stop it
Surely if you sue fake Nintendo, you don't need to discuss the licensing, you'd be sueing them for filling a claim they have no standing to claim
mcfedr··on The paper passport's days are numbered
Risking freedom? You mean doing your part for freedom for all
mcfedr··on The paper passport's days are numbered
The difference is when computer says no, you can show that computer is wrong
mcfedr··on That's not an abstraction, that's a layer of indirection
Completely this. KISS, my favourite acro for this.
mcfedr··on That's not an abstraction, that's a layer of indirection
It's interesting that some modern ORMs are dropping trying to abstract out the dB engine. Specifically thinking of Drizzle for js. And rather just focusing on the programming interface
mcfedr··on What would it take to add refinement types to Rust?
Check out what are often called tagged types.

You basically define a `type A = string &{a: SomeSymbol}`

And then have a type assertion function that just returns true, and you have control over the places A can come from

mcfedr··on Handling cookies is a minefield
The reason not to do that is that dev.example.com can set cookies on example.com and other envs can see them.
mcfedr··on Air traffic failure caused by two locations 3600nm apart sharing 3-letter code
But that's the thing, part of the plan was in a bad case we can switch to manual processing, but at no point someone thought to suggest manually processing one failing plan

I work with great QAs all day, and if one of them heard that there are duplicate area codes, there would be a bunch of test cases appearing with all the possible combinations

mcfedr··on Europe's Internet resilience mitigates impact of submarine cable cuts
Certainly worth blowing up some russian ships to make sure it doesn't happen again
mcfedr··on Air traffic failure caused by two locations 3600nm apart sharing 3-letter code
Reject the plan surely should have come many places before shutdown the whole system!
mcfedr··on Air traffic failure caused by two locations 3600nm apart sharing 3-letter code
But no mention of this insane failure mode? If the article is to be believed
mcfedr··on MTA Open Data Challenge
Why would you region block a webpage like this
mcfedr··on Nextcloud: Open-Source Cloud Apps
AGPL for all the public code, which is most of
mcfedr··on Nextcloud: Open-Source Cloud Apps
Photoprisim

Check it out, I've been very happy with that instead of Google photos.

mcfedr··on Smartphone Tethering: A Bigger Grind Than It Needed to Be
I'm so surprised this is still a thing, I remember it was like 10 years ago, but now you just turn on hotspot and keep going .. at least I thought.
mcfedr··on Elasticsearch is open source, again
I guess it's true. Except you cannot contribute code under AGPL, so it's only open source in name, there is no room for a community to form around the software, Elastic co remains in sole control
mcfedr··on I recreated Shazam’s algorithm with Go
Software patents are magic, you just start your process with 'on a computer do X' and because computers are a piece of hardware you can patent anything you like
mcfedr··on Researcher finds flaw in a16z website that exposed some company data
How can it possibly be a crime? They literally gave the keys to everyone who accessed their website
mcfedr··on Researcher finds flaw in a16z website that exposed some company data
I think I'd be looking for at least a refund on that pen test. I've never come across one that was anymore than a box ticking exercise.
mcfedr··on Ryanair – when every page is a dark pattern
Is this site generated by ai? Repeating the same words and making zero points
mcfedr··on After initially rejecting it, Apple has approved the first PC emulator for iOS
The no JIT rule is just a rule enforced through the app store review process, so it's not going to part of the security architecture. It could of make some static analysis fail, but there are plenty of ways to do that.
mcfedr··on How to waste bandwidth, battery power, and annoy sysadmins
Yea, that's basically it on iOS, although there is a bunch ux, so it's not nothing

On android, browsers can ship their own engines, and they do. There is actually some freedom on android.

mcfedr··on US EPA Enforcement and Compliance on Apple Fabrication
It's funny, mostly your zoning laws seem to create crazy problems, and yet the one actual problem they are supposed to solve and they completely fail
