Sourcetable | Designer/Developer (hybrid), Figma/React | Full Time | REMOTE (California, PDT)

Sourcetable is a networked spreadsheet that makes it easy to sync data, build models and collaborate without code. We handle the data warehouse, data pipelines (SaaS tools + DBs), and syncing so everything stays up to date.

We are thinking ahead to our next hire and looking for a hybrid designer/developer; person no.5 on our team. Likely start date would be in February.

You would be Sourcetable's first designer and responsible making data accessible to everyone. There are plenty of design challenges including an easy-to-use Joins GUI (it's the "easy" part that's hard), data documentation, collaboration, visualizations, business templates, general branding, and more!

When not engaged in creating designs, you will be required to implement them. This requires strong React.js skills, and modest backend experience including SQL, database and API work.

Note: to succeed in this role it is imperative that you are a hybrid designer/developer. We are a small team, and everybody has to wear many hats. Design discussions often extend to the database-schema level, so designers with programming experience will have an advantage here.

If you're interested in learning more, we'd love to meet you! Email eoin@sourcetable.com (co-founder / hiring manager).

p.s. Bonus points if you have been part of an early-stage or founding team. Please mention it in your email!

Sourcetable | Backend Developer | US Remote | Full Time

Sourcetable is a networked spreadsheet that makes it easy to connect, sync and query data from databases and SaaS tools, without needing to know how to code.

We are looking for a strong backend developer who would be excited to join a founding team focused on making data accessible to everyone. Some dev-ops experience will be helpful, as is previous experience working at an early stage startup. To be successful and happy in this role it will help if you are passionate about solving problems for customers, and would be excited about building the future of spreadsheets.

Currently we use Node, Python, Postgres / Redshift / MySQL, Terraform, Redis, AWS. It's possible we'll migrate to Go in the future.

Sourcetable.com | Backend Engineer | Bay Area, CA | Remote | Full Time

Hi HN! @jenkinsj and I are pleased to be recruiting the second full-time members to the team at Sourcetable. We are building a spreadsheet that syncs with your data. The data could be in SQL/Postgres/Redshift/etc, or in any of the SaaS apps people use to run their business.

We have found that for most people, accessing data in a spreadsheet and keeping it up to date is far too hard. This is a problem we've experienced ourselves and a problem we've been paid to solve at various companies over the years. We're productizing our knowledge and building something people want. From there, we want to push the limits on how far a web-based spreadsheet can go in providing value for our users.

As team member no.4, you will play a pivotal role in building our company culture alongside us as we go on this multi-year journey together. We are keeping the team small as we bring Sourcetable to market and have a strong preference for ex-founders or founding team members (<10). Jeff and I have a combined 20+ years startup experience, so you will be joining a strong founding team. We are looking for exceptional people who relish hard engineering challenges, but are also humble enough to answer support tickets as and when needed.

If building the future of spreadsheets sounds energizing to you, then please get in touch. We would love to hear from you!

Damn. Dwellito have done a really good job here. I was trying to figure out how anyone "wins" in this space and it looks like they've aggregated all the supply to create a comprehensive marketplace for the built environment. Nice work to whomever made this.

Elinor Ostrom's 8 Principles for Managing the Commons deserves a mention and deserves inclusion in future additions.
mceoin··on Introduction to Permaculture (1994)
Totally agree. "Permaculture" was really just Mollison - a genius and veteran biologist - collating all the best practices and strategies he had observed from land-based cultures, then codifying this knowledge of what works. (Hence, "permanent agriculture".) It couldn't be less controversial.

mceoin··on Funding for Covid-19 Projects
I haven't seen anything specifically related to COVID-19 and won't speculate. I'm also not a scientist or medical professional, so just think of me as some guy on the Internet saying "mycology is an interesting non-big-pharma industry that has bio-prospecting potential due to its anti-viral properties", and Paul Stamets is the source of that statement.

(Personally, I'm making a lot of Reishi tea and taking a spectrum of polypore supplements as a general immune booster, not a specific defense against COVID-19).

P.S. good luck finding cordyceps!

mceoin··on Funding for Covid-19 Projects
Mycology. Not a company but a novel and underinvested space with 3000+ yr history with antiviral applications. Paul Stamets is the go-to guy here but likely slammed. His talk, into the mycoverse, goes into detail about how he was brought in to do battery testing post-9/11 and how basically all polypore mushrooms (common globally) have some antiviral properties. Some are super-potent. At risk of being called "the crazy mushroom guy" I'm including here because I know this is a vastly underinvested in space and has huge latent potential WRT antivirals. The reason it is underinvested in is because patents are hard (used for 1000s of years) so big pharma stay away. Long shot, but also could be tested everywhere, reasonably cheaply. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f0rkcrWqsV4
mceoin··on A 96 Bitcoin ransom payment ends up on Bitfinex
I wonder how this would go down in Australia. Precedent set from Gamer's vs Natwest is that the buyer retains ownership rights, so long as they purchased the product in good faith that the seller owned the original product or had the right to sell it. So if I buy your stolen car without knowing it is actually yours and was stolen, I retain ownership of the car and you have no legal remedy to retrieve it from me.

mceoin··on Wildfires Are Raging Outside Every Major City in Australia
I think Australia had more than pure idealism in mind during the war: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Attack_on_Sydney_Harbour
mceoin··on Wildfires Are Raging Outside Every Major City in Australia
Why shouldn't a citizenry decide to limit exports of certain goods when it is in their own interest to do so? We certainly do this with uranium already. Likewise with weapons technology and all manner of harmful trade vectors.

Australia's coal industry provides few jobs, is heavily government subsidized (either explicitly or through direct infrastructure funding), pays little to no tax, and creates environmental harm that the majority of the electorate disagree with.

[Sorry HN: I know I should be supporting this with annotations but am time pressed today.]

mceoin··on Wildfires Are Raging Outside Every Major City in Australia
You are correct - I can't edit original post as it's been too long but thank's for picking that up.
mceoin··on Wildfires Are Raging Outside Every Major City in Australia
Yes it's definitely possible that Bega will flip next state election even though the anger is directed at federal leadership.
mceoin··on Wildfires Are Raging Outside Every Major City in Australia
Can only speak from my personal circles but the current bushfires aren't having a direct impact on personal responsibility (those who were interested were already interested; those that weren't still aren't).

We just had a political cycle where the Labor party lost on (among many reasons) a more climate-change focused agenda in the federal election, so we won't know for another three years if there is any any voter backlash. Additionally, parliament is not in session and the major parties are currently focused on crisis response (instead of attacking each other), so the political football has yet to truly begin.

Aside from the considerable pain and hardship for these local communities and the potential increase in politicization of environmental issues, the tourism sector is being obviously effected as you simply can't drive to many parts of New South Wales right now, tourists are being asked to leave many areas, and Sydney has been smog filled for the last month.

mceoin··on Wildfires Are Raging Outside Every Major City in Australia
Also important to recognize that Australia's carbon contribution is not solely limited to domestic output but also our coal industry. Australia is the largest exporter of coal in the world and this is not properly accounted for in our emissions accounting. On a per-person basis, our output is among the highest in the world and the inaction of others does not absolve us from having a moral responsibility to clean up our own mess at the very least.
