I moved to San Francisco on February 1st 2011 with a desire to build a better Internet. I'd like to think I'm making progress.
I didn't go into details above but a nice thing is that we leverage cloud compute and storage, so you can query billion-row data in sub-second time. (Courtesy of Duck!)
We released Sourcetable today with the AI chatbot & AI data analysis features, but a very limited cell-based AI (only "summarize" and "fix formula"). We'll be releasing a big AI-based magic-autofill solution in the coming weeks.
The primary difference vs table-based solutions is that Sourcetable is a spreadsheet in the common sense of the word, similar to Excel and Sheets. We have A1 notation and cell-based referencing. This is what most users expect, and this flexibility/familiarity has a big impact on the breadth of users and use cases within a team.
The formula referencing system of these table-based solutions is usually very limited both to columns/rows (not cells), and is a set of SQL-based queries which are much more limited than that 500+ formulas and functions spreadsheet users commonly expect.
Retool specifically: I tend to think of Retool as a lightweight custom-ERP software system, whereas Sourcetable more like Excel + PowerBI + Data Warehouse, so we will generally be much stronger for reporting and analysis. We definitely have some overlap in potential users since technical operators should like us both. FWIW - Retool is an excellent product.
We have an Excel/Sheets competitor coming to market, have raised a seed round, are an experienced team with prior success, plenty of hard engineering problems to solve, as well as a bunch of AI stuff cooking under the hood.
Culturally, we really like working with people who have been part of an early-stage startup. The majority of the team are ex-founders. It just seems to work better that way.

We are an 10-person mostly-Bay Area team. We have some some remote folk, but this role is San Francisco based.

We're building an AI-native spreadsheet. Seed funded, experienced team, moving quickly. https://sourcetable.com/jobs#fullstack-engineer
This role requires deep experience in both React and Python. AI exposure is desired but not required. More than half the team are ex-founders, so early startup experience and a good sense of humor are great traits.

We are an 8-person hybrid-remote team. Half the team is SF-bay-area, the other half are remote. Remote applicants must be US-based.

Sourcetable is building a spreadsheet-based data platform to make data accessible to everyone.
We’re hiring for a staff level full-stack engineer to join the team, working on our React.js / Python codebase (C# is helpful too).
You do not need a degree to apply, but you must be able to demonstrate that you have worked on hard things and have experience commensurate with the role. It will be helpful if you have previous experience at a startup.
https://sourcetable.com/about is a good place to learn more about what we're up to. You will be joining as person no.8 on the team.
If interested, email me (founder): eoin+hn@sourcetable.com

Sourcetable is building a networked spreadsheet to make data accessible to everyone.
We're hiring for a product engineer / designer to join the team. This is a combined design / frontend development role. The brief is that you will be implementing a lot of your designs, while also leading design direction for Sourcetable itself. You will be the first full-time design hire, working closely with the CEO.

Sourcetable is building a networked spreadsheet to make data accessible to everyone.
We're hiring for a senior frontend (React) engineer to join as the 5th engineer on the team, building a competitor to Sheets/Excel.
You do not need a degree to apply, but you must be able to demonstrate that you have worked on hard things. Advanced React and client-side programming knowledge is required. It will also be helpful if you have previous experience at a startup.

Hi - we’re Sourcetable, a small team building a next-generation spreadsheet to make data accessible to everyone. Sourcetable is like Sheets/Excel, plus a lot of turnkey data infrastructure that “just works” out of the box. Users get a data warehouse and data connectors to most SaaS apps & DBs, all data streams are ~live so models and reports stay up to date, and nobody needs to write a line of code to get setup. Just some examples of how this is useful: users can build cross-channel data models (ie. Joins), users can store and compute a lot more data than traditional spreadsheets (multi-gigabit CSV files are trivial), and companies can setup and use data reporting infrastructure without hiring engineers (this is vastly underrated by Silicon Valley folk).
If you’re still reading, then you may be delighted to know that we’re hiring a designer and a full-stack engineer. The catch is that we are very picky. Oh, and you also have to be based in the Bay Area since 20%+ of our work time is IRL.
Why so picky?
Because we’re not just building a product or a codebase, we’re also creating a culture. The culture we strive to create is one of excellence: a small team of exceptional people who can do a lot with the minimum of supervision and management. This means that everyone on the team has to be able to ride the line between perfectionism and scrappiness, and be a strong hacker able to find solutions and ship product. This also means that everyone on the team has to have multi-domain experience.
The designer we are looking for, for example, needs to be at least a mid-level software engineer, putting 20% of their time into the codebase. (This will not be appealing to most designers, and that is ok.) The full-stack engineer needs to be both a senior frontend developer, great at hacking javascript, and also have backend experience and be willing to jump in where needed from time to time.
This sets a high bar for team members, but it also means the people you’ll be working with can hold a lot of problem sets in their head, do a lot, and have higher quality conversations, which makes for a more interesting workplace (and a more effective team at our stage of company).
If this sounds interesting, get in touch: eoin+hn@sourcetable.com
Sourcetable is a networked spreadsheet that provides turnkey data infrastructure that "just works". (Sync, centralize, store and access all of your data, live, in a spreadsheet.)
We're currently hiring for two positions: a Senior Frontend Engineer and a product designer. For the design position, frontend engineering experience is required as it is a hands-on-keyboard role (you will be shipping some of the features you design).
If competing against two trillion-dollar competitors simultaneously, while improving software used by over 1bn people sounds appealing to you, get in touch:
eoin+hn@sourcetable.com
Note: our team is based in San Francisco and you should be too (or at the very least, the Bay Area). We meet IRL on Wednesdays and have occasional off-sites.
Sourcetable is a spreadsheet that makes it easy to centralize, query and build reports using live data from your SaaS applications and databases.
User's think of us as the easiest way to automate business reports -- this is a huge, common business problem, and also a great wedge from which to build a fully fledged data analysis platform. Under the hood, Sourcetable provides a turnkey data warehouse + data connections + Excel-like spreadsheet + SQL GUI + dashboarding tools, etc.
We're looking for a senior frontend engineer to join our team as person no.6. We have a strong preference for hackers, ex-founders, and/or those with dual design/development chops.
Bay Area applicants only since we like to meet weekly IRL, in addition to occasional off-sites at my house. (The rest of the time, push code from wherever you like.)
Experienced team, hard technical problems, well funded.
If this sounds interesting, email me (founder) - eoin@sourcetable.com and mention HN in the subject line.
If you are a designer who is a decent frontend developer and would like to join a 5 person startup, we're looking to bring on a design lead at Sourcetable.
Sourcetable is a spreadsheet that syncs live data from all of your business applications (think: Excel + data warehouse + data connectors + SQL GUI + charts/graphs/dashboarding). We have a top tier engineering team and are looking to bring on a strong UI/UX designer who can also get in the weeds and implement their own designs, polish pixels, pitch in on growth engineering initiatives, etc.
Our team is "Bay Area Remote", which means we're all based in the Bay Area. We meet up in person every week or every other week, and all applicants need to be based in the Bay Area as well.
Spreadsheets are one of the most used business applications on the planet, with design challenges spanning from schema design and user friendliness all the way through to brand differentiation. This is not a normal design role, but should be exceedingly fun for the right person.
We don't have an education or minimum-years requirement for the role, but we do expect that you will have worked at a startup previously.
If interested, send me an email. (My name is Eoin)
