If it was a larger amount of money you should definitely tie payments to milestones. When it is such a small amount like this it's hard to spend time on a lawyer (or even your own time) for a detailed contract so, in this case, communication is key. Even when things go sour.
"This wasn’t the right project at the right time for crowd sourcing" - what? Isn't that the whole point of this crazy stunt?
I find that answering the job ad specifically, explaining how I would work on the problem, and mentioning how I have done something similar in the past gets me the best success rate to speak with the client directly. Even if you don't have exactly the same project under your belt, you can reference other web work and explain how portions of the project are the same.
Even if you are not in a big CL city, many replies to job ads are from overseas or from developers with limited communication. If you can communicate well and provide a solution for exactly what the customer is asking, you can win some good (and potentially long term) work.
But as Ryan says above, you need to weed through a lot of bad listings and be persistent in your search.

I think this shows that the original article is incorrect in its assumption that given more product differentiation people will chose an alternate airline. If more people were willing to pay for extra legroom then more airlines would offer these "economy plus" sections.
For me, I'll stick to flying one airline, keeping my elite status which almost always guarantees me an upgrade to first class.
All of them. ;)
I mean that in a nice constructive way. After setting up OpenBravo and other open source POS/ERP systems I am looking to get info on your product quickly. How do I import existing products? How do I perform end of year inventory? How are gift cards/gift certificates handled - if at all? etc.
Personally I'd rather read all the answers than be forced to watch dozens of slow paced videos, but if you could speed them up I guess that would be ok too.
I would expect that your potential customers already know about POS terminology and quickly want to see if your software matches their technical requirements and is easy to use. The incredibly slow moving, dumbed-down videos would turn me off instantly.
Seems like my first email address (especially university VAX accounts) back then were even more cryptic and included some bizarre Godzilla reference like djd984kd@mothra.someschool.edu.
Perhaps you should mention this to the Colgan training co-ordinator. I don't think the CO 3407 crash had anything to distract the pilots other than their own conversation.
