mcappleton··on Japan’s labor market is tight, and higher wages may be needed to retain workers
The fundamental problem is that the Japanese population is shrinking. The only real solution is more babies or at least really good robots.
mcappleton··on Al Gore's Home Energy Use Surges Up to 34 Times the National Average
He didn't say that. He said he didn't want their content anywhere on hacker news.

Getting a heads up that content may be biased is great. But that's a lot different from censoring it altogether.

mcappleton··on Have Smartphones Destroyed a Generation?
>The urge to believe in the moral decay of the young is extremely powerful.

It's probably actually right. It takes a long time to figure life out. The problem is that the older people of today are comparing themselves who have lots of life experience with youngsters who have a lot to figure out. People forget that they were just as rambunctious when they were young.

mcappleton··on Launch HN: 70MillionJobs (YC S17) – Job board for people with criminal records
It's not just drug offenses. Now you can go to jail if you speed over 20mph over the speed limit even if your being safe about it
mcappleton··on Al Gore's Home Energy Use Surges Up to 34 Times the National Average
That is low man. It's like saying: "I don't care if you're right. I don't like you so I'm not listening."

But if that's how you feel, I think there is reason to like Exxon.

ExxonMobile has done an unbelievable amount of good for the modern world, which li was built on and runs on oil. Everything you have, from the food you eat at the grocery store, to the house you live in, was produced or transported using oil. Even tesla cars are built with materials that are shipped with oil. There is just no other energy store we have that is as abundant and efficient and versatile as oil at this point. Yes it's caused a bunch of pollution but I think the world is still better for it.

mcappleton··on When all job differences are accounted for, the pay gap almost disappears
This whole debate about gender pay is based on the flawed assumption that marriage is not an integral part of human society. Humanity has functioned since time immemorial with marriage as a fundamental human institution. Sure, it's not honored in many cases, but by and large it is a part of human social fabric. Today, however, we are experimenting with disposing of time tested marital roles, instead expecting both spouses to do the same things. Business 101 would instruct you to pick a partner with an opposite skill set from what you have and each work on what they are good at. Yet today we reduce efficiency by having both man and woman split both tasks, or worse, do the task both by him or herself.

It's time that we start considering the family as a unit again.

mcappleton··on We Evolved to Run But We're Doing It Wrong
Haha avoiding danger definitely makes it more interesting... or when you step on an acorn!
mcappleton··on Introverts, Emotional Processing, Self-Esteem and Salary Negotiations
You hit the nail on the head! I'm actually reading that book right now.
mcappleton··on Nissan attacked for one of 'nastiest anti-union campaigns' in modern US history
I'm fine with unions or no unions. What I'm not fine with is the government making laws giving one side unfair bargaining power. I think a lot of unions have gotten too greedy and "killed the goose that laid the golden egg". There are plenty of places to work in this country. If you don't like one, you can unionize Or move on. But trying to get a law passed to strong arm your position is just wrong if you ask me.
mcappleton··on Bride, groom who slammed Dallas wedding photographer online must pay $1.08M
People have a right to voice their opinion, even if they are wrong. This is draconian and goes against principles of free speech. You have the right to say something you think, even if it turns out later that you were mistaken. These people just wanted their photos, and this lady wouldn't give them up without an extra $125 payment. Sure maybe she wrote it in the contract, but that doesn't mean they can't say they didn't realize what was in the contract and that the lady didn't tell them about this before.

I think people just felt sorry for the photographer so they violated the first amendment. Very sad

mcappleton··on Bride, groom who slammed Dallas wedding photographer online must pay $1.08M
When the government punishes your speech with a 1 million dollar fine, how can you say the government isn't "actively preventing you from doing it"?
mcappleton··on Library patterns: Why frameworks are evil
Probably depends on the language. Frameworks are great on the front end though, because Angular/Vue are basically just easy ways to interact with the GUI. It's much less convenient without a framework.
mcappleton··on Introverts, Emotional Processing, Self-Esteem and Salary Negotiations
When someone acts like a jerk to you, remember this: hurting people hurt people. It is a natural tendency to lash out at others when we are hurt. So to fix the situation, try to figure out what's hurting the other guy and see if you can help deal with the source of his pain. Don't fight back or you'll just hurt him more and make him more mad.
mcappleton··on Introverts, Emotional Processing, Self-Esteem and Salary Negotiations
That's why if you can be a person who genuinely cares and show it, you can go very far in life
mcappleton··on Apple’s Silence in China Sets a Dangerous Precedent
I would hardly consider this "setting a precedent", given the fact that this is standard practice for the Chinese government and any company who works there.
mcappleton··on Psychologists say more and more young people are entitled
It's "cool" to hate on millennials now for being lazy and such. A hilarious song about it:

mcappleton··on Dell XPS 15 9560 Review
I have a 4K laptop running Linux mint and it's great. Mint has a high dpi setting that makes it look good. There are a few programs that have trouble, but most work just fine. I think Ubuntu will be coming out with support soon as well.
mcappleton··on Monopoly was invented to demonstrate the evils of capitalism
To be pedantic: minus taxes
mcappleton··on Forgetting a Child in a Car Is a Horrifying Mistake. Is It a Crime? (2009)
It's a tough situation. The parents are already wracked with grief over their mistake. Anybody can forget. For something truly accidental it's not right to punish harshly. Obviously in the case of intentional neglect or intended murder punishment is appropriate.
mcappleton··on How to sell a CRM I built
Thanks for the advice. I don't know where I would get that information though.
mcappleton··on Baltimore State Attorney Drops Dozens of Cases: Body Cam Shows Drug-Planting
We did not give up "lex talionis". In fact, shooting a police officer is currently punished more harshly than regular people, at least in Texas. It's called "capital murder" in texas
mcappleton··on We Evolved to Run But We're Doing It Wrong
I ran cross country in high school and I just ran barefoot around the neighborhood. I'd run 10 miles barefoot sometimes. I had Vibrams but didn't like em as much.

The great thing about running barefoot is that you can feel the ground under your feet. It makes it much more interesting to run and less boring.

mcappleton··on Forgetting a Child in a Car Is a Horrifying Mistake. Is It a Crime? (2009)
I believe it's better that some guilty go free if it means that the innocent are not wrongly punished. Wrongly punishing the innocent is terrible and causes so many psychological problems. That's why we have innocent until proven guilty
mcappleton··on Ask HN: What language/framework do you plan to use in your next project?
For front end, Vue.js. It is what angular 2 should have been in my humble opinion. Any time anything changes in angular or react, both recalculate how the entire application state should be (although there are some workarounds). Vue, on the other hand keeps track of exactly how parts are connected so when one part changes, only relevant sections are updated. When compared to angular 1, the difference is night and day. I added Vue to Amy current app on a page with too many watchers and it worked miracles. I will definitely be using it in the future.
mcappleton··on Legalize It All – How to Win the War on Drugs (2016)
What if they were legal but every sale had a special tax with the money specifically going to rehab and for those who need help.
mcappleton··on What is the fastest way for a programmer to make $10000?
This is some of the best advice I ever got for business:

Ask and you shall receive Seek and you shall find Knock and the door will be opened

The only way to get 10k short of stealing is for someone to give it to you. And nobody will give it to you if they have no connection to you. So the first thing you need to understand is that your success depends on connecting with people who can be convinced that it is in their best interest to give you money in exchange for something you offer. As a coder, you can definitely make 10k on one project or two, so that's a great goal. There are many people out there who would benefit from paying you 10k because you have valuable skills.

Hockey legend Wayne Gretzky said "100% of shots you don't take won't go in the goal". Similarly you won't get any business at all if you just sit around. You have to get up and keep trying things. Attend meet ups. Even go door to door. That's what I did selling a side product I built but now one of the guys I met I'm in talks with to build software for about 15k.

The thing is if you go out and keep trying to find people who might give you money, eventually you will find someone who will give you money. This is one of the secrets to life.

mcappleton··on Pigs are smart and sensitive, yet we continue to justify killing them for food
This is a great article. Thank you for sharing it.
mcappleton··on Pigs are smart and sensitive, yet we continue to justify killing them for food
I care about animals. I try to at least only buy cage free eggs and meat from humanely treated animals.

However I wonder if the author is also against killing lions, wolves and other predators. Those animals are so brutal in how they kill they make people look like angels. I don't understand how naturalists can so vigorously protect animals who's life depends on mauling other animals regularly.

mcappleton··on No Dunkirk spirit can save Britain from Brexit defeat
After google got fined 6 billion euros for advertising on their own website, I'm shocked that The NY Times acts like the EU isn't a burden.
mcappleton··on Windows Subsystem for Linux is out of beta
Its a good point. Depending on how frequently you use it, dual booting is an option though. I switched from windows because Meteor was slow as molasses and I'm very glad I made the switch. Dev stuff just runs better on Linux in my experience.
