mbfg··on Home schooling's rise from fringe to fastest-growing form of education
The idea of believing things without evidence is a dangerous pattern to fall into. It may not matter as you say, if you don't see evolution as most likely correct, but if your mind is willing to accept things without proper evidence, you are going to be a shill.
mbfg··on Home schooling's rise from fringe to fastest-growing form of education
The good thing about science, tho, is it's open to learning what the answers are, rather than presuming them.
mbfg··on $23,500 in Coins to Pay a Settlement? Judge Says Keep the Change and Try Again
clearly jerks, but frankly, i'm surprised this is a legal order by the judge.
mbfg··on The U.S. consumer is 'walking towards a cliff,'
The median is definitely somewhere under 100k.

mbfg··on The U.S. consumer is 'walking towards a cliff,'
with the mean household income going above $1 million, you wouldn't think we would need to worry.
mbfg··on Ask HN: How did Git become the standard when Windows is the majority OS?
i haven't used windows in a really long time, but i believe gitbash is still a thing and makes things easy to use.

But git just crushes everything else in capabilities. Hg is decent and maybe more appealing to windows folks, but it's branching model just isn't as nice. (as least as i remember it -- could have changed over the years).

mbfg··on The standard American household is now a millionaire, according to the Fed
What this does say to me, tho, is that with better economic policy, taxation, etc. Everyone could live comfortably.

Self Own.

mbfg··on C Is Not a Low-level Language (2018)
PDP-11 is a fast machine?
mbfg··on The Average New EV Costs $14,000 Less Than It Did a Year Ago: KBB
the average price of new gas cars is also out of reach for most people. But your point is valid, EVs aren't really all that different in price anymore.
mbfg··on Everyone Daydreams About Collapse. Few Understand It
I'm glad i lived when i did. It wasn't nirvana or anything, but it was probably the best it will be, or close to it. Seems pretty clear that the financial divide is going to come like a freight train, and over night it will devastate. I might be lucky enough to be dead by the time it comes.
mbfg··on Former U.S. Soldier Accused of Trying to Give Classified Secrets to China
behind a paywall, so couldn't read. I'm just hoping it wasn't secrets about our nuclear subs.
mbfg··on The Moral Case for No Longer Engaging with Elon Musk’s X
i don't use any of these for these reasons and other reasons. These leaders have proven they are evil. But perhaps in other cases there is a difference between evil thru general incompetence and evil thru competence.
mbfg··on Tech Workers Paying $700 a Month for Tiny Bed 'Pods' in San Francisco
"The tiny spaces only fit one twin bed"

this reads like the beds aren't supplied, to me? I'm not sure which is worse.

mbfg··on How Much Does It Take to Be the Top% in Each U.S. State?
it's probably mostly an inverse correlation, tho.
mbfg··on Circles do not exist
circles exist with NURBs, iirc. Now at some point you have to turn on individual pixels, so ....
mbfg··on Two-parent households should be a policy goal
based on what metric?
mbfg··on Geographic ‘hot spots’ for cigarette and firearm deaths in the U.S.
Should private citizens be allowed to own rocket launchers with munitions? This is a hyperbolic argument, but so is "universally against gun controls".
mbfg··on Dechurched America: 40M worshippers no longer attend
just not good fiction
mbfg··on Antarctic sea-ice at 'mind-blowing' low alarms experts
all politicians are flawed. vote for the least flawed.
mbfg··on Viagra Lowers the Risk of Alzheimer’s by Almost 70%, Study Finds
I wonder how many women were part of the study.
mbfg··on Grindr Loses Almost Half Its Staff on 2-Day RTO Requirement
I was told my in-person office (nothing at all special) cost the company 15K per month several years before covid, and when i was working part time remote, i have to either go full time remote (thus freeing that cost for someone else) or full time in person. i went full time remote, of course. Gotta imagine real estate is one of the bigger costs for in person software companies.
mbfg··on God writes Haskell
we only measure the two directional speed of light (bounce timing). The Einstein convention assumes that speed is the same in all directions. i'm not saying it's not. Just that it's impossible to tell otherwise. Einstein mentioned this in his paper.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/One-way_speed_of_light

mbfg··on God writes Haskell
how did we determine there is free will in the universe or haskell?
mbfg··on God writes Haskell
Interestingly i don't think we know that the speed of light remains constants, nor could we devise a test to determine it.
mbfg··on Musk threatens to sue ADL after blaming it for X ad sales slump
you probably have to differentiate social liberals and fiscal liberals.
mbfg··on Scrum is a cancer
the problem is, it's hard to prove that someone is not a true "_____". Because the definitions are not well defined.
mbfg··on I've witnessed many bad managers – and they almost all had these 4 traits
Clearly my pov is jaded, but in many years having many bosses, the best one were the ones that just left me alone to do what i thought needed to be done. People on the ground almost always know that better than management, and if dictates are to be given periodically they should be strategic instruction rather than operational. My relationship with most managers, esp the ones that weren't on the better side, were one way. I gave them information, so that they could do their jobs. And it would appear their jobs were almost always to do the jobs of their bosses, so their bosses could do their bosses jobs, etc.

I suppose there are many different personalities, and many different ways people want to be managed, but frankly forced artificial weekly one on ones is just that, forced and artificial. I can't imagine why people want that.

mbfg··on Scrum is a cancer
it's very religion like...

The say they are doing scrum, but they aren't really doing scrum

He says he's a christian but it's clear to me that he wasn't one all along.

mbfg··on Ask HN: My mother is slowly losing her eyesight, how to prepare?
Maybe want to fix the title "Looking" -> "Losing"
mbfg··on Dirty downside of 'return to office'; ending WFH could make climate crisis worse
She had a remote position over the past few years, but landed a new job in February at a nonprofit, which came with a catch: The job required her to make the hike to its Silver Spring, Maryland,

Let's hope the first sentence is obfuscated too, otherwise, the pseudonym probably isn't going to help.
