mbar84··on Reading fast, reading well, and reading widely (2020)
I've seen the same thing and come to think of books as preparation by the author for these lectures/interviews. The book is a demonstration that the author has thought things through. They've put things to paper and what they're saying isn't just some off the cuff remark.
mbar84··on Physical buttons outperform touchscreens in new cars, test finds
It's not just the frequency of access, it's things that are time critical: Next song. Hazard lights. Lock doors. Accept call. Hang up call.
mbar84··on Nuclear energy is clean
Then so be it, that's perfectly fine. I'm the last to say people should throw their money out the window when there are better options around.
mbar84··on Librarian's Letter to Google Security
None of this is related to technology and the best Google could do is expend resources on education.

For tech illiterate, maybe the least bad option is that their security is that they won't lose their wallet. I think this is one of those situations where security has to take a back seat to usability.

1. Create a passphrase with this method: https://xkcd.com/936/ 2. Write down your passphrase. 3. Write down recovery codes, and keep them in your wallet.

Also: Tips to make sure you never lose your wallet.

mbar84··on Nuclear energy is clean
Let the market decide. You may be right and I wish you well if you're basing investment decisions on your projections. It does not seem plausible to me that nuclear would be uncompetitive on a free market. There are cost curves and economies of scale that may not be visible due to the regulatory burden and regulatory uncertainty.
mbar84··on Million: less than 1kb virtual DOM that is fast
I wouldn't be surprised if some people at google are working on a transactional approach to DOM manipulation, or perhaps something even exists already I'm not aware of. I think what we already have is implicit transactions, where updates are batched, so long as they don't depend on each other.
mbar84··on I Looked into 34 Top Real-World Blockchain Projects So You Don’t Have To
It's like a discussion on abortion. There are fundamental disagreements that have little to do with technologoy. Everybody keeps repeating their conclusions and predictions, only time will tell who is right.
mbar84··on 2022 Amish Population Profile

mbar84··on 2022 Amish Population Profile
Women's financial independence is fragile. It depends upon the modern Welfare state, financed predominantly by men and the preservation of norms relating to alimony and child support, also financed predominantly by men. Time will tell if this model has a future, atm. the trends don't look too good.
mbar84··on Three Arrows Capital has defaulted on a loan worth more than $670M
Worse than paper shuffling about and numbers changing in a computer is when peoples behaviours change due to such foolishness. People who thought they could retire early but should have been continuing to work. People who bought cars and propped up an industry that should have been shrinking, freeing up resources for other parts of the economy to grow. People who built houses with resources that could have been put to better use and which now stand empty.
mbar84··on Explaining Code Using ASCII Art
Thanks for the shoutout. AsciiGrid is dockerized should you want to run it yourself, for example because the keybase website happens to not be serving it anymore: https://github.com/mbarkhau/asciigrid#docker
mbar84··on Where are all the crypto use cases?
The only use case for blockchain is money. Everything else is a scam. We only need one money, the one with the most dominant network effects. Right now, if it every happens, that money looks like it will be Bitcoin. This will take a while. How long it takes depends not so much on Bitcoin itself, but on how bad the competition undermines their use case as money.

In the meantime, people may find it surprising that there is indeed no other use case for the most inefficient database man has ever conceived, other than the on e it was explicitly designed for.

mbar84··on Equality is prevented by the misperception that it harms advantaged groups
Accumulation of capital is prevented by the misperception that equality is desirable in and of itself.

Is it better that we allow the capital in society to be commanded by elected bureaucrats or by people who acquired it in a competitive process, even if that means that they will have more pieces of paper (called shares) with their name on it? Is the billionaire who only spends $100k on himself every year to be viewed the same as the billionaire who throws a party every weekend with bikini models on his mega-yacht?

mbar84··on Twitter set to accept Musk's $43B offer – sources
This is a straw-man argument. Everybody knows there is an issue with a deluge of spam, obnoxious, content etc. The issue is trust/control. Whom do you trust to have control over who sees what content? A public platform should be beyond reproach in terms of its political bias, which is not the case for Twitter. A way to get closer to that would be to devolve the control over content moderation as close to each user as possible.
mbar84··on The bottom is dropping out of Netflix
I hope this is a signal that, after the experience of lockdowns and isolation, people have a greater appreciation for the value of other peoples company.
mbar84··on Evidence that life flashes before the eyes upon death
I wonder if the memory carousel itself is not so much a survival mechanism, but rather it's a side effect of a survival mechanism. In layman terms, the brain goes into overdrive as it tries everything it can to eek out some minor optimization in your movement, that might help you dodge an arrow. As a side effect everything else in your brain also gets stimulated like never before and for the parts of your brain that we relate to consciousness, the experience is one of explosive recall of memories.
mbar84··on Why have female animals evolved such wild genitals?
Read in the voice of David Attenborough.
mbar84··on Ask HN: If you used to be socially awkward and shy, how did you improve?
Competence first, then confidence will follow. I don't think there's a shortcut. I think the shyness is a valid emotion where you're trying to protect yourself from a real danger. If you are not competent and act with confidence, you're liable to either fall on your face, or be smacked down by people who see you're faking it. Accept your incompetence as it may be and keep working on yourself.
mbar84··on Lawmakers Drink Raw Milk to Celebrate Legality, Become Immediately Sick (2016)
Considering the climate in India, I imagine the situation is a bit different there than in western countries. I think raw milk can be safe to drink if it is cooled down immediately during the milking process and kept refrigerated all throughout until it is drunk only a few hours later. Personally though, I think it's natural only for calves and babies to drink milk (in particular of their own mother) and I wouldn't mind a bit if the practice went away.
mbar84··on Ask HN: What is your Git commit/push flow?
Sublime Merge offers a nice GUI for the workflow you're describing with `git add -p`

mbar84··on Germany considers keeping nuclear power plants online
Since it was a political decision to shut them down, it's hard for me as an outside observer to judge a statement that they've been "run down". Is there an independent assessment of the safety of the existing power plants, free from political influence?
mbar84··on Germany considers keeping nuclear power plants online
If the current supply is a result of production costs and market forces, rather than geological supply, then this shouldn't be an issue. My understanding is that there is plenty of uranium in the ground in Canada, but it's perhaps not economically viable due to competition from within the countries you mentioned.

This is not a fundamental issue. Let the market work.

mbar84··on My lizard brain is no match for infinite scroll
This is one of the nice things about https://hckrnews.com/ Visit once per day and maybe read 5 articles of the top 20 from the previous day. Done.
mbar84··on Slovio, an international simplified Slavic language
It seems that today, a data-driven computer model might be able to produce a much better artificial language than was previously possible. If you have grammar, vocabulary and text corpus for each language, parameters for number of speakers who would presumably learn the language, then you could perhaps optimize for minimal learning curve for the most people.
mbar84··on Huawei MatePad Paper – eInk Tablet
I think he means it in a metaphorical sense. Anything that grabs attention is "LOUD" in this sense (just as is ALL CAPS writing).
mbar84··on GDPR penalty for passing on of IP address to Google by using Google Fonts
Oh come off it. There's a reason it's popular: it's useful. You can search for fonts and use them without having to host them yourself.

I argue for downloading fonts yourself and hosting them yourself: https://google-webfonts-helper.herokuapp.com/fonts

But let's not pretend that isn't an extra step that some people regard as unjustified.

mbar84··on Danish government makes its new economic model open source
It's both. I don't think it's too much of a stretch to broaden what he meant by seen/unseen to also refer to econometrics models which incorporate only some things (that can be measured/seen) and not others (that are unmeasured/unseen).

The seen/measurable: employment in the production of windows. The unseen/unmeasurable: missing employment in the production of suits.
