mayama··on Emacs-Helm development is now stalled
I clicked in to see why would kubernetes helm would stop development without any indication all of a sudden.
mayama··on Nikola: How to Parlay an Ocean of Lies into a Partnership with GM
Aren't neuralink and boring private corporations? Aren't billionaires allowed to throw money at whatever they fancy, and these kind questions specific to only public corporations?
mayama··on Huawei’s HarmonyOS is now open source
I tried looking at commit history for few repos and was prompted login to view them. Not sure what logic in deciding you had to login to view commit history. Especially when you can clone the repo to local and view it there.
mayama··on AT&T’s current 5G is slower than 4G in nearly every city tested by PCMag
With datacaps that could run through 5G in seconds, it makes little sense in opting for 5G instead of 4G. Which costs more and with less battery life.
mayama··on Async Views in Django 3.1
Same here. We do lot of processing in background jobs, which make no sense moving to async task.
mayama··on Inkscape 1.0.1
It didn't require x11 last time I checked, but startup was startup and some operations were quiet slow.
mayama··on Arm Announces Cortex-R82: First 64-Bit Real Time Processor
Does this mean realtime doesn't use caches and branch prediction a all? Or worst case of miss for cache or prediction miss is lower than realtime threshold?
mayama··on Graviton Database: ZFS for key-value stores
Even their README is click baity then. I quickly glanced at their repo and thought it somehow is related to ZFS, before reading comments here.
mayama··on Small nuclear reactors: tiny NuScale reactor gets safety approval
How can a multi million dollar construction start without necessary approvals?
mayama··on Introduction to Ada
Any recent popular languages with similar support for types of Ada? Is such type system being costly to implement the reason not many other languages pick up the feature?
mayama··on India bans PUBG, Baidu and more than 100 apps linked to China
Retroactive taxes was from previous gov. After recently launched PLI scheme, India has record high FDI inflows[1]. FDI was flat in 18 and 19, started increasing last year after corporate tax cut and further after PLI scheme.

Of course, India still has long way to go regarding Ease of Doing Business, with byzantine land and permit laws, capital crunch for MSME etc.. Some states like UP, Gujarat are trying to get around byzantine laws by abolishing them for few years. And of course GDP will contract after complete lockdown for a quarter.

mayama··on Multiple Western Digital 5400RPM drives are actually 7200RPM drives
That's strange. I would assume 7200rpm drive would be costly to produce compared to 5400rpm. What possible reason could they have to falsely advertising which could be a loss.
mayama··on Amazon drivers are hanging smartphones in trees to get more work
Apparently they are using some third party app to accept orders.
mayama··on PinePhone Manjaro Community Edition
Getting wifi and sound working with new laptops was a chore or hit and miss with Debian or Fedora at the time. Ubuntu worked on a lot of these issues.
mayama··on Bill Gates' nuclear venture plans reactor to complement solar, wind power boom
India's new design PHWR-700 was a few years late to come online. Plant at Kakrapar came online in July and another plant at same site should come online next year. Plan for 10 new PHWR-700 is still in progress, but original goal of 2022 will be pushed by a few years now.

mayama··on Wind and solar are cheaper than thought, admits UK government
One option I don't see brought up often, in addition to battery, is HVDC. Transmission loss for 1000km on HVDC is 4% according to wiki.

Continent wide grids could be created connected Europe, Asia and Africa. Storage requirements could be lowered with HVDC grid interconnect. India's One Sun One grid plan is to build a Asia Africa hvdc grid.

mayama··on SpaceX Starlink average speedtest is 42.3Mbps down / 9.7 Mbps up
Starlink might even be affected by rain and weather conditions like some old wimax internet. I haven't seen any information about this regarding starlink.
mayama··on SpaceX Starlink average speedtest is 42.3Mbps down / 9.7 Mbps up
You are ignoring millions of people in rural Asia and Africa who don't have internet connection, or a spotty 3g/4g connection for internet. Satellite internet is legitimate use case for these people. Starlink might be too costly for most of them, but some other satellite internet company might cater to them.
mayama··on Anders Tegnell defends Sweden's virus approach
Here are the deaths per 1M for few countries around Sweden's death number. Even ignoring Italy which was affected first, all other countries deaths per million are within 2% of each other. What is alarming about Sweden's numbers?

* UK 585

* Spain 580

* Italy 556

* Sweden 450

* France 445

* Netherlands 350

* USA 330

mayama··on Stanford lab envisions delivery drones that save energy by taking the bus
Bike couriers will be paying when they hop on bus. Drone operators also have to consider how to pay, of course after evaluating if this approach is legal in the first place.
mayama··on Huawei builds up 2-year reserve of 'most important' US chips
More of a target for espionage or cyber espionage. These lithography, semicon machines are low in number and expensive. Companies can't run gray batch for these and hide the profits, especially when they have good backlog of orders. So, these are good target for espionage, like it already is.
mayama··on India orders coronavirus tracing app for all workers
No primary source listed in that news report, which makes the news highly suspect. Preinstall after pandemic would be easily challenged in courts. Govt can get away with it now because of epidemic emergency laws.
mayama··on India orders coronavirus tracing app for all workers
Scale and legal issues.

Existing tracking measures are used on limited suspected criminals and requires paperwork to cover legal aspects of it. Some kind of approvals are required by magistrate, police etc. And these measures are not built to track thousands of people real time.

mayama··on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS’ snap obsession has snapped me off of it
Same here. Upgrade to 20.04, but fresh install of chromium. Starts in 2sec in plain old HDD.
mayama··on Hacker Publishes 2TB of Data from Cayman National Bank
No income, wealth or estate tax for trusts. And you don't even have to live in south dakota.
mayama··on Facebook isn’t free speech, it’s algorithmic amplification optimized for outrage
And it's a black box sometimes, people who tuned neural networks won't even understand what the NN is optimizing it for.
mayama··on Google suspends some business with Huawei
Will Huawei still have access to TSMC, Samsung fabs etc? I think Hardware should be more of an issue for them than software. Chinese phones already use some alternative to play store iirc.
