mayama··on NRC issues first commercial reactor construction approval in 10 years [pdf]
How is this fundamentally different from Nuscale approval? Like Nuscale this is also brand new design, sodium fast reactor, that hasn't been commercially deployed and is likely to run into usual ballooning budgets and western nuclear construction roadblocks/delays
mayama··on Story of XZ Backdoor [video]
It probably is because of video length, mentioning systemd would mean explaining init system which could add another 5 min runtime. At least they showed it in diagram of dependencies.
mayama··on Story of XZ Backdoor [video]
From my vague memory of xz backdoor, I don't even recall systemd being involved. Now, I get what people are talking about when they said systemd is taking over everything and why there was so much pushback to systemd when it was being added to distros. For me as a end user/dev, it mattered little whether services were started by systemd, openrc etc.
mayama··on DBASE on the Kaypro II
> What’s the dBase II/III equivalent today?

Salesforce, firebase or Supabase etc., but, all are SAAS platforms. Not sure if there is any other platform where you can do database and applications that you can host yourself.

mayama··on TSMC to make advanced AI semiconductors in Japan
Decades in which China started as peasant army(US admin view) and wasn't mostly a peer adversity. But, that changed almost a decade ago and defending Taiwan will become more costly and time passes. New American security document, mostly focusing on America, even acknowledges this.
mayama··on Tesla ending Models S and X production
One emperor in US state doesn't control legislative, executive, judiciary, military and private company boards and financial capital. The way you have to look at China it is an empire with bit of communism and capitalism. If the mandate of heaven is favorable emperor controls everything, otherwise power diffuses a little among the emperor coterie.
mayama··on Tesla ending Models S and X production
> These terms are useless for distinguishing anything -- what you said can be said about literally any capitalist state.

CPC mandates and gets seats on highest boards of companies, combines IP research across civil military, is both producer and consumer of products etc. Look at China's civil military fusion policy on the latest iteration of how they are doing this. In china there is no separate 3-4 branches of govt like in most places. CPC controls all legislative, executive, judiciary, military and private company boards and financial capital.

mayama··on Tesla ending Models S and X production
> China is hyper-capitalist.

China is one party system, where CPC controls and owns production, policy, finance and even consumption levers.

mayama··on Answering questions about Android developer verification
> However other vendors that build upon AOSP, such as Samsung, can make their own decisions on this.

Pure AOSP devices are only some chinese knockoffs without play store. If your device needs play store/device integrity verification, there are lots are requirements by goog that needs to be met. Goog can add new requirement to disable installing unverified apps from adb.

mayama··on YouTube says it'll bring back creators banned for Covid and election content
> There is no proof of a lab leak and evidence leads to the wet market as the source

Because WHO worked with CPC to bury evidence and give clean chit to wuhan lab. There was some pressure building up then for international teams to visit wuhan lab and examine data transparently. But, with thorough ban of lab leak theory, WHO visited china and gave clean chit without even visiting wuhan lab or having access to lab records. The only place that could prove this definitively buried all records.

mayama··on Shai-Hulud malware attack: Tinycolor and over 40 NPM packages compromised
Half of go.sum dependencies generally are multiple versions of same package. 400 still a lot, but a huge project like gitea might need them I guess.

> cat go.sum |awk '{print $1}' | sort |uniq |wc -l

431

> wc -l go.sum

1156 go.sum

mayama··on %CPU utilization is a lie
Combination of CPU% and loadavg would generally tell how system is doing. I had systems where loadavg is high, waiting on network/io, but little cpu%. Tracing high load is not always straightforward as cpu% though, you have to go through io%, net%, syscalls etc.
mayama··on We should have the ability to run any code we want on hardware we own
> Because I did. How come I can do what I want with my computer, but not my phone? Why are phones so inferior in this area?

Apple and Microsoft are constantly working on fixing the issue with their appstores and requiring app signing in more places. The way industry going is to lock down more of laptops, than allowing phones to be like computers.

mayama··on Google: 'Your $1000 phone needs our permission to install apps now' [video]
Google has delayed releasing pixel 10 sources and unlocking bootloader for new phones is becoming increasingly rare. They may lock it down too going forward.
mayama··on Malicious versions of Nx and some supporting plugins were published
flatpak is supposed to address this. Running applications in sandbox. But, with almost all applications wanting access to your HOME, because of convenience, sandbox utility is quiet questionable in most cases.
mayama··on Starship's Tenth Flight Test
> I don't quite understand how the airplane shape made it easier to model the loading and positioning? (Not saying you're wrong, just doesn't fit my intuition and I'm curious).

You can approximate space shuttle reentry to roughly a 2d surface entering atmosphere. Because of airplane shape, the tile side faces atmosphere and the plasma goes around plane edges. Where as starship being cylinder doesn't have any separation boundary and plasma roughly goes more than 180% of the cylinder.

mayama··on Ask HN: Why hasn't x86 caught up with Apple M series?
I disable turbo boost in cpu on linux. Fans rarely start on the laptop and the system is generally cool. Even working on development and compilation I rarely need the extra perf. For my 10yr old laptop I cap max clock to 95% too to stop the fans from always starting. YMMV
mayama··on Go 1.25 Release Notes
Generally I found updated example in one of the test files. Or I could understand how to use library by reading test files in the repo. For me it's the opposite problem, python documentation is too long in some cases and it's not intuitive to find what I want if it's not trivial, and had to use websearch or llm.
mayama··on Training language models to be warm and empathetic makes them less reliable
Not every model needs to be psychological counselors or boyfriend simulator. There is place for aspects of emotions in models, but not every general purpose model needs to include it.
mayama··on What does it mean to be thirsty?
Same here. On recent Indian trips, I got hit with mild nausea after sweating in summer weather. I couldn't believe I wasn't able to go around like I used to few years ago. Had to bring along mildly salted water and take couple of sips now and then.
mayama··on StarDict sends X11 clipboard to remote servers
At some point I started running gui apps without network access, first with firejail and then bubblewrap. This was before flatpak became a thing. I still use collection of bash scripts that built up over time to run applications in sandbox.
mayama··on Apple announces American Manufacturing Program
> Because it’s an authoritarian dictatorship that forces people to do things to achieve its goals ?

That's just part of the puzzle. What makes CPC different from most dictatorships is like NK or SU is that most of ruling elite of CPC is made up of engineers. Along with mandatory CPC ideology leaning, they also have notion that a developed nation is one that builds things. Bankers and Lawyers are ranked way down on power rankings.

On the other hand, most of American ruling elite are lawyers or bankers. So their worldview is mostly rule lawyering, interest earning, hedge fund etc.. Power brokers in these fields make the rules. Builders and engineers rank pretty low in power totem pole.

mayama··on India launches attack on 9 sites in Pakistan and Pakistani Jammu and Kashmir
It's result of supporting fundamentalist terrorism and supporting infrastructure nationwide. After sufficient growth, the extremist support base started being recruited into lower levels of army and the support grew from there. Going forward, fundamentalist support in Army will continue to grow even in upper levels.
mayama··on India launches attack on 9 sites in Pakistan and Pakistani Jammu and Kashmir
> Overstated. There isn't any long term locking capabilities on most rivers under the IWT.

India could build water channel, in style of China's South North water transfer project in less than half decade. Huge dams aren't really needed for just diversion, if India is really serious about it.

mayama··on Wyze pays $255k of tariffs on $167k of floodlights
Long term it will work. If foreign govt allow getting around tariffs, according to trump import deficit formula, tariff on the govt will go up. Usgov could also increase tariff on countries with more companies doing tariff shenanigans. The problem is with american 2 year election/midterm cycle no one believes that this will last more then 3-6 months now.
mayama··on Wyze pays $255k of tariffs on $167k of floodlights
Regarding India, Indian govt already has huge tariffs and non tariff barriers on China. They imposed many of those during Galwan valley standoff and later extended them when they are promoting manufacturing or PLI for specific sectors. Indian govt and local Indian manufacturers won't allow middlemen to come and relabel items and eat in to their share of the pie. Sure, with the corrupted Indian bureaucracy some relabling will still go through, but it wont be much. Not sure how US plans to deal with relabling in Cambodia, Mexico etc. though.
mayama··on Wyze pays $255k of tariffs on $167k of floodlights
India has been producing mobiles for local consumption for few years now. Sure, almost everything was imported initially. But, recently govt is targeting PLI for specific mobile components like PCB, screen, camera modules, enclosures etc. CPU/SOC still has to be imported though. 10% of apple iphones are already manufactured in India.
mayama··on Indian court orders blocking of Proton Mail
That's the cost of having people protesting, blocking and badmouthing govt, for example you are doing right now. Try something like this in China against CCP, your account will be blocked within hour and cops will visit you in a day.
mayama··on Gold Is So Popular It's Making People Nervous
> Everyone holds long term USD instruments. Nobody wants to lose their money. The US is still the world's largest economy - by a lot.

Sure US share of world gdp is hovering around 25% for decades. But, world gdp share of what I would call US adjacent economies, like EU, JPN, UK etc., is decreasing with rise of chinese economy. US could comfortably run petrodollar and global reserve currency with the help of these adjacent economies by exporting US deficit, by forcing these adjacent economies to make concessions like plaza accords when running deficit dollar becomes tough.

China on the other hand is making moves to make maintaining deficit dollar impossible in long run, non-floating yuan, export dumping, belt road etc. We are running in to situation where deficit dollar and global economy decoupling could happen from both sides US and other countries. This is one way triffn dilemma could get resolved.
