maxerickson··on Student teacher arrested for private Snapchat message
I mean, the FBI guys that drove to the school probably read it.
maxerickson··on You Rename My Lake – I Move My Hosting
The "So what, babies shit their diapers all the time" argument.
maxerickson··on Zero-sum thinking will fuel resentment and scarcity
Lots of people want lots of things. Can they within the light cone of their existence?

That's pretty deep. I guess I think that they will work hard for more and thus expect economic growth. Especially with decreasing energy costs. If you want to bet that people will mostly choose to immiserate themselves, go ahead.

maxerickson··on Zero-sum thinking will fuel resentment and scarcity
Economic growth (“growing the pie” vs zero sum thinking) was a function of population growth. Global population growth is rapidly ending, with 71% of global population living in countries below replacement rate. As the world ages and the population peaks, there will be few areas of potential economic growth. Older cohorts will increase in size, the working age population cohort will contact, and there will be less children born every year for the rest of our lifetimes.

There's still ~billions of people that would like to increase their consumption a fair bit.

And then most people reading this will probably be dead when the population actually starts shrinking.

maxerickson··on Oldinsurancemaps.net is now a Charter Project
Sanborn was an insurance adjacent company that made detailed paper maps of many towns in the US in the late 1800s and early 1900s.

This project is scanning those maps and adding the information that modern mapping software needs to show them alongside other geographic information. Where the old paper maps overlap, they work to cleanly stitch them together rather than showing the edges of the paper.

Later: The project is sort of for people looking for the old maps, so I can see why the introduction doesn't spend a life of time explaining them.

maxerickson··on New EU-wide product repair rules come into force
Yeah that's misunderstanding my point. The compliance software might, for example, only play an old format from USB. Probably at low resolution.
maxerickson··on New EU-wide product repair rules come into force
It's pretty likely that manufacturers would charge handsomely for these requirements. At least at first.

You'd probably also get things like TVs with very basic software at import, with much better software available for people willing to obtain it outside the EU.

maxerickson··on Felony charges for citizen deleting phone data at US Border
How do you solve it when they beat you for having a phone that doesn't look like they want?

Like whatever arbitrary thing they decide it should look like that day.

maxerickson··on America's Colleges Are Hurtling Toward an Enrollment Cliff
This is something like "how come there isn't more demand for unlicensed psychologists".
maxerickson··on Field measurements of neighborhood-scale air temperature impacts of data centers
A nuclear power station puts out many times the waste heat of the sites mentioned in the article. We've apparently mostly made peace with the local impacts of those.

Thermal efficiency is in the 30s, so roughly 2x the electrical output as waste heat. Looks like waste heat from nuclear is still quite a bit more than from data centers.

Data centers are growing quickly and that's not including the waste heat from generating the energy the consume, just taking a quick look at the relative direct emission.

maxerickson··on Credit card debt rises to $1.26T, nearing all-time record
That's isn't what I am arguing. I'm arguing that a very large holder of bonds can potentially set the market price. If they move the market for the older bonds, they will move the market for new issues.
maxerickson··on Credit card debt rises to $1.26T, nearing all-time record
China doesn't hold all that much debt, so this doesn't apply

But anyway, a large debt holder can bind up the borrower by announcing they think the debt they hold is worthless. The impact would depend on how much debt it was, with a large amount being dumped almost certainly increasing the cost of borrowing.

maxerickson··on The First At-Home Test for Infected Ticks Could Improve Lyme Disease Diagnosis
It's a bit of a stretch to describe These claims were investigated by the FDA and the Centers for Disease Control, which found no connection between the vaccine and the autoimmune complaints. as "written off as a health panic".

Of course you can just say they didn't investigate it enough or whatever, you aren't trying to make a reasoned argument and thus don't need to exercise reason.

maxerickson··on At-home test for infected ticks could improve Lyme Disease diagnosis
Yes, it's treatable with antibiotics and people that are treated get less sick. As stated in the article, prophylactic treatment with Doxycycline is the standard of care. Testing the tick is an alternative to that rather than something that should be expected to increase treatment...

The article also mentions that symptoms sometimes persist after treatment with antibiotics.

maxerickson··on 388 years ago, Galileo worked out why human giants can't exist
I guess if there were resources that were much more available to these agile tall people that might happen.
maxerickson··on 388 years ago, Galileo worked out why human giants can't exist
How big is big?

The practical limit for bipeds is probably ability to survive a fall to the ground. It's not super common, but enough people die simply from falling from standing.

maxerickson··on The US tried to stop cartel money-laundering; devastated mom-and-pop businesses
So what is your point? They are wrong.
maxerickson··on The US tried to stop cartel money-laundering; devastated mom-and-pop businesses
It's borders that aren't supposed to be there, not people.

Fructose mixed with glucose, not sucrose (the same typo is in several comments here). Sucrose is composed of glucose and fructose linked together.

When corn starch is processed, the produced syrup is nearly 100% glucose. Because fructose tastes sweeter, lots of corn syrup is further processed, converting much of the glucose into fructose, hence the name high fructose corn syrup.

The immunoglobulin is administered proportional to body weight, ideally with most of it injected near the site of the bite.

So one administration, but not necessarily one shot.

Given the political will, that problem is straightforward to address with the permitting.
maxerickson··on OpenAI says my prepaid credits were consumed, refuses to show any record
You are arguing about accounting jargon. The card has to be tracked, the entries that track it fall under the label "liability".
maxerickson··on Why Book Corners won't sync contributions back to OpenStreetMap
It's not really considered an import if a person is looking at all of the changes. They would just need a clear license from their users.

(an import is when there isn't complete review...)

maxerickson··on Western men are going abroad to find traditional wives
Pathetic is probably a better term. It is less dismissive of it.
