maxbaines··on Ever wondered who you are in C#? So, this quiz is what you need
Ok it was kinda correct, I’m a garbage collector btw.
maxbaines··on Ask HN: How can I come to peace with the years I wasted on pointless things?
I reckon it’s ok to be a kid and do fun things such as games, who knows maybe games spurred your current interest in tech and developing etc. Make the best of how you feel now and start reading about your new interests, you can develop on any pc it does not need to cost a large amount of money. Remember to still have fun too though!
maxbaines··on Ask HN: Email service for tiny company, 20 users, no marketing, no transactional

maxbaines··on Googling 'cancer genetics conferences' only returns ads
Search does show non ad links for me, however I find other searches I make on Google pretty much shows me a list of ads with a couple of non ad hits at the bottom. This is the reason I switched to DuckDuckGo a few months back.
maxbaines··on Show HN: What is your go-to free email provider with custom domain support?
Thanks, had not heard of Migadu. Looks to be a pretty useful service.
maxbaines··on Ask HN: Should a professional software dev know how many bits go in a byte?
Hmmm this is interesting, my background is industrial automation, where every day I would work with bits and bytes. But today and the last 10 or so years I have been building higher level software, machine data collection, web, db etc. I can honestly say not once have I had to deal with bits or bytes, I cannot think of an instance here I have needed the knowledge either. So I guess it’s not a requirement for software development today. But I still feel it’s important knowledge but can qualify why.
maxbaines··on 20-Person Startup, 30 SaaS Services, and $1,183 Monthly Bill
Sounds like you have VC money :) I do not spend $1000 a month, on our entire infrastructure and SaaS combined.
maxbaines··on Microsoft closes off two avenues of attack: Office macros, RDP brute-forcing
Interesting policy change for RDP

'The default policy for Windows 11 builds – specifically, Insider Preview 22528.1000 and newer – will automatically lock accounts for 10 minutes after 10 attempts to sign in fail. Users can tweak this, changing the number of failed sign-in attempts that trigger a lock and how long the account will be locked.'

maxbaines··on Ask HN: How do you host your Postgres DB in 2022?
Hosted Postgres on digital ocean, I use Hetzner bare metal for all other services but Postgres is the one thing I use managed services for, why? I simply don’t know enough about Postgres to trust I’ll get everything resilient, backed up and secured correctly, although I guess when costs exceed managed features I’ll make the time to learn the above and host on bare metal.

maxbaines··on Ask HN: Is your mobile phone more expensive than your personal computer?
Good question, had not thought about it. Yes it is. Although not more expensive than my total personal computing as I have multiple (too many) laptops.

maxbaines··on Electron whirlpools: Scientists witness electricity behaving like water
'at temperatures close to absolute zero and in pure, defect-free materials – quantum effects should take over their movement and allow them to flow as an electron fluid with the viscosity of honey'
maxbaines··on You won't be able to run Windows 11 without a webcam
Or rather OEM's won't be able to sell a new laptop with Windows 11 pre-installed without a webcam.
maxbaines··on Deter House Sparrows from your hanging feeder with a Magic Halo (2017)
This surprised me, House Sparrows here in the UK seem to get along with other small birds just fine, I never see any aggression at feeders or in the hedgerows.

maxbaines··on Online Minecraft Bans Will Be Able to Block You from Private Servers
Good points, I agree.
maxbaines··on Online Minecraft Bans Will Be Able to Block You from Private Servers
I can see there is a need for this, if its implemented well i think it could help a lot of people, moderators, and servers. But I cannot see how i could be implemented well? which is worrying.
maxbaines··on Online Minecraft Bans Will Be Able to Block You from Private Servers

maxbaines··on Copilot sells code other people wrote
Initially not thought about co-pilot and other ai generators this way, but now I have I’m finding it hard to ignore.
maxbaines··on Why is Apache clinging to OpenOffice?
Because of what’s been highlighted in this article I found it super difficult to figure out a good alternative to MS Office, so agree 100% with the article. Now a happy LibreOffice user.
maxbaines··on Ask HN: Why don’t restaurants have tables with androids that you can talk to?
