maxbaines··on Ask HN: Is anyone actually making money with ChatGPT?
Specifically ChatGPT does not have a public API yet, its coming soon though.
maxbaines··on Beeper- One Chat App to Rule Them All? – PupOnTech
Good honest comments as to why such an app is not possible.
maxbaines··on GTA V Online exploit allows hackers to delete other players' profile data
Have seen this floating around since last week - Currently GTA V is disabled in my household. What's interesting is the silence from Rockstar on the subject whilst lots of the community are actively saying this is happening via Reddit and other forums.

My thinking is this is an active exploit for Remote Code Execution and Rockstar are not confirming or denying until a fix is in place. Give the potential would be great to see something from Rockstar soon.

maxbaines··on Comparing MQTT Brokers for the Industrial IoT
I work in a very very (very) similar area to yourself, we should talk one day.

Still not sure I agree, Node-RED for instance is open-source, has no office and the lead developer often develops it streaming on twitch from his home in the Uk. Yes Flowforge are building to offer enterprise support. But we both know and you have written about how Node-RED is eating OT/IT. Both of our offices for instance are in a shared, but different innovation building.

I do find it interesting and misleading, that EMQ X has the line about its innovation centre. And it does perhaps make me think twice about the enterprise support offered.

Just not sure an Open Source project should be ignored because of it.

Interesting post regardless.

maxbaines··on Comparing MQTT Brokers for the Industrial IoT
I am interested to hear more opinion on excluding EMQ X as it has a Chinese origin is it fair to exclude for this reason? - EMQ X an OpenSource product available on GitHub with a mix of contributors? Would we exclude Vue JS when looking at JS frameworks for the same reason?
maxbaines··on $100k for a bird statue: the results of the Twitter office auction are in
Maybe a Not a Twitter Bird flash sale from Mr Musk.

maxbaines··on US Department of Energy: Fusion Ignition Achieved
Very much a laymen also, however funnily enough I was listening to a bbc program called in our time, a couple of nights ago, where a similar topic was discussed one comment was that life is carbon based and for carbon to exist a star has to die, so yes therefore we are in the early stages. Will try to fin the episode….
maxbaines··on Ask HN: Who uses Docker Compose in production?
I use docker compose in production, for a bunch of services that run on a single machine - I don't have a huge need for clustering, resilience or scaling. Is there an alternative? obvs Kubernetes but that's a different story.
maxbaines··on Not-so-great features coming soon to Windows 11
Thank you that's useful, ill sure be setting it. I just wish it was not necessary, certainly in Pro version.
maxbaines··on Not-so-great features coming soon to Windows 11
For context I used and loved Windows since I was a teenager with Windows 3.1 but for me I just find an OS with such features to jarring for daily use. Also note Mac OS has its problems too. I was so excited for W11 and generally love most of it.

Oh and I run Linux on a Surface Laptop.

maxbaines··on Not-so-great features coming soon to Windows 11
Yes you can however every so often I see the let’s finish setup screen will appear to prompt you, again you can continue without an account and then be nagged again.
maxbaines··on Not-so-great features coming soon to Windows 11
I say it every time I see similar posts, but these kind of features and being tied to an Ms account has made me leave windows for Linux and MacOS.
maxbaines··on Ask HN: Is it okay to ask employer why the application was rejected
Yes
maxbaines··on Low-code is not a cure for overworked IT departments
I think this is exactly where the value is - I commented similar on this thread (didn't see you comment..)
maxbaines··on Low-code is not a cure for overworked IT departments
One advantage with low/no code I have seen be successful, is allowing non IT teams to do the work themselves therefore reducing the load on IT teams. Notice I said reducing as oversight and training is still required.

It also helps the other teams understand the complexity of there problems (sometimes), and helps IT teams understand the use-case or idea.

I have seen project lead times reduce from month's to days.

All said and done though technical oversight and management is still required.

maxbaines··on List of inactive GitHub accounts that possess a “rare” username
Any of those usernames could have private repo's used often? I imagine the list is only showing users who have not committed to a public repository.
maxbaines··on Tell HN: Tired of Hearing about ChatGPT
Yes I am tired of reading about it, but discovering new and novel technologies is half of the reason I read HN so for me it's par for the course. Also have to admit both are pretty cool, and likely in the future sometime game changing.
maxbaines··on Just 22 percent of techies in UK aged 50 or older: Chartered Institute for IT
Perhaps 15years ago I would think this makes sense given the 80's, 90's boom but now this surprises me, I guess a lot of the early intake have retired early.
maxbaines··on San Francisco police consider letting robots use ‘deadly force’
"You have 20 seconds to comply"
maxbaines··on San Francisco police consider letting robots use ‘deadly force’
All that comes to mind is Robocop, based in Detroit if I remember correctly.
maxbaines··on Ask HN: What Has Replaced UML?
Interested to hear any answer, my opinion is nothing has. However I think this is a struggle of the domain UML solves, as I am not too sure UML ever established itself as a goto diagram/modelling language?
maxbaines··on Developing on Remote Machines Using SSH and Visual Studio Code
This is how I do all of my development now. Keeps daily laptop or desktop really lightweight and means backup only has to happen in one place. Also containers.
maxbaines··on Charts.css: CSS data visualization framework
I can see plenty of times where this can be useful, and hope to use it. Related I recently found and use Apache E Charts https://echarts.apache.org/en/index.html
maxbaines··on Linux on the laptop works so damn well that it’s boring
I have been using this on Intel SL3 works great https://github.com/linux-surface/linux-surface

Also works on AMD but did get crashes sometime and sometimes need to boot into Windows to reset audio….

maxbaines··on Porsche Goes Glamping: Iconic Automaker Launches Rooftop Tent
I thought it was April for a second there.
maxbaines··on Welcome to the New Verge
When I posted this I viewed it on an iPad mini, it renders I imagine similar to when viewing on mobile, really was not impressed and in my mind a regression. When viewing today on my desktop machine, I actually quite like the change.
maxbaines··on Generation Z says it wants sustainable clothes but buy fast fashion instead
Don't we all want and do this?
maxbaines··on Azure Managed Grafana–now generally available
In the FAQ it states Azure runs Grafana Labs' commercial software https://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/services/managed-grafana/#...

I had a horrible thought for a minute this was going to be another AWS & Elastic
