max_likelihood··on Show HN: JavaScript plugin to build 360-degree images
Thanks for sharing Tridi! I found it very easy to use and I liked the fact I could dump my images into a local folder and be done. With js-cloudimage-360-view, I first had to create an account on cloudimage.io to get a token (for CDN delivery) and then put my images on S3, Google Cloud or Azure Blob which require credit card information for the free trial.
max_likelihood··on Myths in Machine Learning Research
Thanks for linking. My tldr from the top-rated answer: the components of a Tensor can be written in "matrix" form (i.e. a 2D array of numbers), but the Tensor is not that matrix. Ultimately, "a Tensor is what transforms like a Tensor".
max_likelihood··on Myths in Machine Learning Research
I have often seen Tensors introduced in the context of Einstein's General Relativity. I read this article on HN: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=19055994 a few weeks back and found it really helpful.
max_likelihood··on Myths in Machine Learning Research
Even though I don't know what a Tensor is, I had a suspicion that TensorFlow was really just "MatrixFlow". I felt validated after reading myth 1, but I'm still trying to wrap my head around the difference between Tensors & Matrices. I have a feeling that I missing out on something beautiful, like Fourier Transforms, and when I finally get it a deep smile will spread across my face.
max_likelihood··on New Proof Shows Infinite Curves Come in Two Types
I agree it's confusing. If you consider a random variable X whose value is the rank of a randomly chosen elliptic curve. Then I believe this article is saying X converges in probability [1] to 50%/50%.

Similarly related is the concept of "Almost Surely" [2]. Wikipedia includes a great example with throwing a dart.

Perhaps BACON would have discovered Kepler's 4th law if the AI was programmed by mystics? :)
max_likelihood··on My Journey into Fractals
Beautiful work. I set this: https://cdn-images-1.medium.com/max/2000/1*y8eAZdMBfXkIB2S8X... as my new desktop background ;)
max_likelihood··on Code Rush – The Beginnings of Netscape and Mozilla (2000) [video]
I really enjoyed this documentary. It's where I learned the term "Zarro Boogs". At one point jwz (Jamie Zawinski) makes a comment which essentially foreshadows net neutrality. I was also blown away by Stuart Parmenter contributing to the code base at age 16!
max_likelihood··on DeveloperHub.io: Create beautiful product documentation, hassle-free
I wonder how this compares to docs written in VuePress? (https://vuepress.vuejs.org/guide/)
max_likelihood··on Quaternions: the Strange Numbers That Birthed Modern Algebra
Seems like the top and bottom ribbons would work. But the ribbons on the side get a kink every 2 rotations that the animation sort of sweeps under the rug?
max_likelihood··on Why I Pull Out My Hair
I went through some very traumatic experiences during my sophomore year of high school. I can't say 100% that it "started" my trich, but within that same year, I began pulling coarse/kinky black hairs from my head because I felt like they were out of place. I was fascinated by their presence among all my blonde hair. Moving into college I started targeting other more subtle areas like sideburns and my beard. I found that I could pull on these areas in the middle of class without drawing much attention to myself. Back in the privacy of my dorm room, I would pull pubic hairs to relieve the stress I felt while racking my brain over challenging math problems (I was a math major). During this same time, I also developed an addiction to pornography.

Fast forward, I just had my 33rd birthday. I haven't looked at pornography in over 5 years. But I'm still struggling with pulling out my hair. And that's how I know how much of a stronghold this has on my life. I do it mainly when I'm self-soothing or just under a lot of stress. I know my triggers and I still can't defeat this thing. I have tried N-acetylcysteine, shaving my hair short, prayer. My wife will even swat my hand down (bless her heart) if she sees me reaching for a hair. But then I end up getting mad at her for not letting me have my fix.

My theory is that I don't truly value and love myself and that's why I'm willing to inflict damage upon myself. Sometimes I even use pulling to "punish" myself for not understanding technical things. It's self-mutilating and there is a lot of shame and guilt associated with it.

I'm still hopeful that one day I can overcome this habit (disorder?). I sure as hell don't want to have kids and have them grow up watching daddy pull hairs.

max_likelihood··on TerminalView – A terminal inside Sublime Text 3
On Linux Mint, I had to use `{ "keys": ["ctrl+alt+o"], "command": "terminal_view_open" }` in Preferences > Key Bindings because "ctrl_alt+t" was opening up my system Terminal.
max_likelihood··on Random Points on a Sphere
Wow, mind blown. Unfortunately, even with an undergraduate degree in mathematics, I was lost after this paragraph:

`This made me eager to find a proof that all the even moments of the probability distribution of distances between points on the unit sphere in \mathbb{R}^d are integers when \mathbb{R}^d is an associatve normed division algebra.`

Nonetheless, very interesting!

max_likelihood··on Show HN: Browsh – A modern, text-based browser
Very cool! I find the pixelated images to be quite charming. One thing I noticed, when I go to https://text.brow.sh it reads: `Welcome to the Browsh plain text client. You can use it by appending URLs like this; https://html.brow.sh/https://www.brow.sh`. Should it be `https://text.brow.sh/https://www.brow.sh` instead?
