Be gentle, it's a project that's just starting.

Please note that they are not a MetaSearchEngine. They have their own crawler (in beta phase ATM).

They value privacy and are commit to opensource.

(And look better than GigaBlast)

maverick74··on Ask HN: Matrix or Tox?
You also have Jami (jami.net)

I, personally, would consider only Jami, qTox (tox), Signal or Riot (matrix), if you're seeking privacy.

however all have their problems.

Signal - (uses signal proctocol - opensource)is great on mobile, and it's growing in users very fast. However the desktop client is a bit awkward (IMHO) as it's not a native software (i think it used to use electron...). It's regarded (and awarded) as the best alternative for privacy to whatsup-like apps. It's centralized, but very few metadata is recorded (i think only the day of the first connection is recorded...)

qTox - (uses tox proctocol - opensource)is very nice as well, but not much used and the development seems stagnated and not much is heard about it either. Mobile version is also not very active. The tech behind it is great, however. It's a Distribuited System - so it does not need servers to work

Jami - (unsure what its protocol is called - opensource)is a great software no one knows about and few use it (yes, the good old chicken and egg problem). That apart, it is a distributed system (like tox, but i have the feeling jami is superior in it's implementation - but i could be very wrong about this feeling!!!!) so it also does not need servers.

Riot - (uses Matrix proctocol - opensource) very promissing as they are running toward making it use P2P communications - and so, making matrix a distributed service (no need for servers) like jami and qtox - but... it's only on beta stage and... well it may take a while... ( https://matrix.org/blog/2020/06/02/introducing-p-2-p-matrix ) but, on the bright side, unlike jami and qtox, matrix is much used by many projects (KDE guys, for example, decided to adopt it across their entire project).

So, for something that works cross-platform, i would bet on matrix on the long term, if you need a service that many people use, or Jami, if you don't need it to be used by outsiders.

qTox seems too much stagnated for me. Signal - while it's a great service it's centralized AND i - PERSONALLY - don't like their desktop approach (i maybe outdated and not knowing if they already have a decent, native, software for Linux/windows/macos desktops)....... IT'S THE BEST ON MOBILE, HOWEVER - VERY VERY GOOD!!!

Yes, you're right!

It was a bit "à-lá-ubuntu" but it was intentional as i thought it would bring the topic more attention. :)

maverick74··on Coming to Chrome: a new way to use tabs
Conex ( https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/conex/ ) works with horizontal tabs strip but has the advantage that it can hide all tabs that don't belong to the current container.

Now, if only Firefox would improve the speed of hiding and showing tabs used for container switch.................

(btw, does anyone know of a bug report related to this improvement???)

maverick74··on Coming to Chrome: a new way to use tabs
Amazing. Chrome discovered the wheel!!!

Oh wait... no it hasn't! Firefox already had something similar, only more advanced!!!

maverick74··on Ask HN: What mobile browser do you use?
Firefox

Currently evaluating the new Firefox Preview as the default browser.

maverick74··on The Firefox Browser is a privacy nightmare on desktop and mobile
You can check everything that is being sent to mozilla at:

about:telemetry

and as you can see there is nothing that identifies you. And even if i'm missing something, you can always disable telemetry and be sure that (unlike others) firefox will respect your config and won't be sending any data

maverick74··on The Firefox Browser is a privacy nightmare on desktop and mobile

maverick74··on Ask HN: What can Firefox do to get you to make the switch?
I've always used Firefox (at least since i switched from IE6 LOL)

but my most important features can be summarized (mostly) here: https://wiki.mozilla.org/Security/Tor_Uplift/Tracking

86 little bugs... but this as a personal user.

As a business user there are others that need to be fixed (pwa features, i'm looking at you!!!).

but then again... I've already made the switch, so...

maverick74··on Ask HN: With paywalls everywhere now where do you get your news?
It depends!

For IT, for example, my main sources are HN, phoronix, planetKDE and another webpage in my own language. I also read a lot of news from the POCKET articles that show up in my new tab page in Firefox.

HN (and Pocket service) provides news from all other web that I don't visit regularly but that, occasionally, do have interesting news (and not just in IT).

All the rest is trash (so, no paywalls - oh... And there's also a Firefox addon to bypass paywalls)

maverick74··on Firefox Preview/GeckoView Add-Ons Support
Well, this means that I won't be able to use it until next year...

Lack of add-ons and lack of user specified search engines is a must have to me...

maverick74··on Xubuntu 19.10 vs. Lubuntu 19.10 RAM Comparison
Well not everyone is a techie.

Most people don't mind having a lite DE as long as it's not too ugly (or feeling like win98), has a familiar GUI and is not hard to configure.

OpenBox (beside being feature complete - no new features allowed and locked with x11) does not have that "familiar" GUI.

But for more techie people, openbox is a solution, or the new sway or even the terminal!

maverick74··on Xubuntu 19.10 vs. Lubuntu 19.10 RAM Comparison
Let me suggest you to, when you do try Lubuntu with LXQt, use kwin as the WM.

It's very lite (you won't notice the difference when compared to openbox) and it's feature full/very powerful.

LXQt devs have mentioned they will probably migrate to kwin when Wayland arrives for good.

(and forget lxde. LXQt is the future ;)

maverick74··on Xubuntu 19.10 vs. Lubuntu 19.10 RAM Comparison
LOL!!!

Fair enough!!!

Have you tried PCmanFM and LXQt? I think you'll be pleased

maverick74··on Xubuntu 19.10 vs. Lubuntu 19.10 RAM Comparison
If you care about 1.5s and other measures in the same sizes, then this post is for sure of interest to you, because you can save 100MB+ of RAM and have a perfectly functional and beauty DE with LXQt!

By the way, I use Plasma on my everyday job and I can't complain of it.

It's fast, feature full and works very well. (I never seem to understand how people complain of it being slow, bloated, whatever... Mine isn't!!) The thing I love the most in it is being able to set it in whatever way I want. I never get tired of it and so far it hasn't let me down. I'm always amazed that, whatever crazy idea I think of that can speed up my work, or make me more comfortable about my DE, they have an option for it!!!

It's a kind of freedom I can't find anywhere else.

For older computers where every MB counts (plasma uses around 350-500mb), or for people who don't care about extreme customizations (that are happy with an XP/7 like DE), then LXQt is used

maverick74··on Xubuntu 19.10 vs. Lubuntu 19.10 RAM Comparison
So... Do you mean xubuntu could have a better score or lxqt?
maverick74··on Xubuntu 19.10 vs. Lubuntu 19.10 RAM Comparison
Yes, despite all the bad advertising and all the persistent ghost (that just won't go away) KDE's Plasma as evolved a lot over the years and is now very lite while doing a lot of things (and if you have a sluggish Plasma DE, then your computer or distro DOES HAVE A PROBLEM that is not KDE's fault)

maverick74··on Xubuntu 19.10 vs. Lubuntu 19.10 RAM Comparison
Apparently Mate uses more RAM that Xfce or LXQt so, usually, the competition is between this two.

But i agree that a Mate comparison would be nice as well!
