maverick74··on Is Firefox a Search Engine?
@zerojames

Something like

"TV station contest mistakes Firefox for a search engine"

Would make a better title...

maverick74··on Is Firefox a Search Engine?
Yeah.

I know people that say exactly that.

As if Chrome and Google (the search engine) were the same thing...

In fact, if you put Google on another browser and change the browser icon into Chrome's they won't be able to tell the difference!!!

(but yeah, one would expect the TV station should have done their homework...)

maverick74··on Ask HN: Company I just started working for has security policy NO Firefox
That's actually funny because mine has a security policy of NO Chrome (or anything based on it!)
maverick74··on Steve Teixeira, Mozilla’s New Chief Product Officer
Ah ah. Another one eating Mozilla's revenue big time!!!

They all talk experience but never the numbers being paid.

The solution is not a well paid employee! It's an employee that likes what it does, no mater the money

maverick74··on Ask HN: What's the next big thing that few people are talking about?
Yeah, Europe also bets on it.

I have hopes it builds up to the hype.

But it's not a guarantee, naturally.

Let's cross fingers. Lol

maverick74··on Ask HN: What's the next big thing that few people are talking about?
Well, yes. You're right about that! But that's also true for every other source.

H2, from what I know is nowhere near ready as batteries are.

But I believe with more investment it can get there!

maverick74··on Ask HN: What's the next big thing that few people are talking about?
Yes. The sad part is that - I think - we could (and should) already be there... But as always, money leads :(
maverick74··on Ask HN: What's the next big thing that few people are talking about?
Now, this is a nice reply!

Enlighten me in a lot of subjects and with H2 downsides I can accept.

I confess I know a bit more about batteries that the H2...

maverick74··on Ask HN: What's the next big thing that few people are talking about?
I own a car with +315.000km from 1995 (not my main car, however) that works as good as the day it was bought.

I would like to see battery degradation beat that. (yeah, the tech is new. We'll probably get there... In 10 years)...

About the materials... There is a few reports on their problems... Mining and other problems of getting it

About the battery cost: that's not what I've been reading! It seems batteries are the most expansive part...

maverick74··on Ask HN: What's the next big thing that few people are talking about?
WT...?!?!

How the h... did my simple comment, based on my PERSONAL opinion on the subject got into this witch-hunt?!

Enough with the torches and forks!

This is not propaganda! It's MY PERSONAL conclusion on everything I've read! - the word -PERSONAL- is the key here.

If any of you think I don't like electric vehicles you are wrong! Anything that does not pollute is welcome(to try to undo the shirt we all did)!

But I have to say it: ATM - personal view, again - to me, electric vehicles based on batteries S-U-C-K!!! And they SUCK big time!!! I don't see them as decent alternative!!!

Sure! Environment-friendly it's the best we have! But they suck! And hydrogen has much more promise! Not developed enough? Yeah! It's not. But then again... Let me say it again: electric vehicles based on batteries suck.

And unless they get at least the first 3 points fixed you won't be changing my mind! 50.000 for a car that takes 25 min to charge and that if, for some reason, the battery goes the way of the Dodo I can expand ALMOST another 50.000?

Sorry, I'm not payed enough for that.

You guys must all have big pay checks every month... But I don't!

maverick74··on Ask HN: What's the next big thing that few people are talking about?
What amazes me is how little we talk about hydrogen (H2) fuel cell vehicles.

Because, unless we get a tremendous breakthrough in the next 5 years, electric battery vehicles will be a very big pain.

-Batteries are terribly expensive (and prices are not going down as fast as expected)

-Batteries degrade too fast

-Batteries take too long to charge

-Electricity prices are already going up terribly fast to take advantage of the boom (and blaming the war, and everything else to justify it's rise)

-Batteries pollute a lot more than previously though

-recycling Batteries is hard

-Batteries component materials are rare

-if you get into a crash your Battery will most likely be affected - which means you will probably have to spend almost the price of a new vehicle

Can we bet a little more on the most abundante substance on the universe?

I know it also has it's problems... But they do seen less...

maverick74··on Bill Watterson’s refusal to license Calvin and Hobbes (2016)
I love the strip. I love the artist decision and resistance to "the money".

It's the artist I have more respect in the whole world because of this!

It's still teaching us something!!!

maverick74··on Netguard- no root Internet blocker per app
I used netguard for years but i had one complain about it: it would either completely block an app from accessing internet or it would allow it total access.

In some apps I wanted to keep the the internet access for them to function correctly, but i wanted to block everything else (from ads to telemetry) as a result of a lack of trust on it.

With netguard the solution was to buy an addon that would allow that. But since i'm not scrooge mcduck... i had to keep the basic version.

UNTIL...

I found TrackerControl ( trackercontrol.org ) it's based on netguard but with no restriction on the features. I can now have all the features minus ads and telemetry on the apps i don't trust. :)

give it a try

maverick74··on Lenovo shipping new laptops that only boot Windows by default
The thing is just that most users don't have a clue about what bios is.

They're just locking people and making it difficult for them to grow and explore other OS such as Linux.

That's a bad attitude!

maverick74··on Lenovo shipping new laptops that only boot Windows by default
Doesn't mean a thing to me. I was never interested in their machines and even if i would ever be, this puts things very simple: Lenovo is a no-go!

If they don't care about user's freedom of choice and wants to lock them into that M$ thing, then i'll simply won't care about them either!

Tuxedo!!! I had completely forgotten about Tuxedo!!!

Thanks for the tip :)

I wish there were more initiatives like this!
maverick74··on Hate paywalls? 12ft.io is the answer
well... wonderful news. There is also a chrome addon:

https://gitlab.com/magnolia1234/bypass-paywalls-chrome-clean

maverick74··on Hate paywalls? 12ft.io is the answer
Meh... this is A LOT BETTER:

https://gitlab.com/magnolia1234/bypass-paywalls-firefox-clea...

as soon as you access the page (in Firefox, naturally!) it automatically removes the paywall. It's like it's never been there! You can't even imagine you are crossing a paywall! :)

maverick74··on Ask HN: Favourite open source game?
I liked Hedgewars a lot!!!

https://www.hedgewars.org/

But something SimCity like is also great!

maverick74··on A Kernel Hacker Meets Fuchsia OS
And yet it works on Genode/Sculpt! :)

(yes... it's also a very limited OS... maybe someday it gets a decent GUI and starts to get more attention)

maverick74··on A Kernel Hacker Meets Fuchsia OS
Would be nice to see something like this on seL4 (in some OS like Sculpt, for example)
maverick74··on Bing contract prohibits DuckDuckGo from completely blocking Microsoft tracking
Brave indeed brings high hopes in this field!!!

I was just hopping that, since it was based upon tailcat, it would create a bigger disruption by being opensource like Gigablast.

(However, i understand that, from a financial point of view, that's a risky move. But like DDG... i hope that maybe someday it will be)

maverick74··on Bing contract prohibits DuckDuckGo from completely blocking Microsoft tracking
WT...?!?!? I was not aware of this!!!

Is Gigablast, really, the only "alternative"?!?!?! (in the meanwhile, since there is no advantage, i'll be back to DDG....... for the time being...)

Still, my point remains: we could, at least, have a version of DDG that would only use it's own index!!!

Isn't that possible? (I would be using it!!!)

maverick74··on Bing contract prohibits DuckDuckGo from completely blocking Microsoft tracking
Yes, i've read most of the comments...

But what i would REALLY like to see on DDG (beside it becoming fully OpenSource - someday) was having it taking the step of not relying on Bing.

That is a terrible shadow over you.

You should embrace the momentum you're having and step up and do your own thing. Your own index. Yes, you have to build/rely on others such as wikipedia... naturally

But please... NOT on big tech!!!

Or one day, someone else will get there and eat your lunch (Honestly, Qwant is a great alternative that apparently does not rely on big tech)

I maybe wrong, but i think this is what everyone one wishes from DDG!!! I believe everyone wants DDG free from Big Tech

(but everyone is free to correct me).

maverick74··on Bing contract prohibits DuckDuckGo from completely blocking Microsoft tracking
@yegg

Well... how about stopping all this "Bing on the background" thing and do like Brave search and Qwant (which i'm testing as to switch away from ddg for a few months now - because of you relying in Bing) and start believing a bit more on your own index???

Why not start being a "real" search engine???

I would say it's about time!!!

(If brave and qwant can do it, so can you - man... even Gigablast does it!!!)

maverick74··on 10 years since Google said to “hang tight” about Linux support for Google Drive
Well... There's a lot of good alternatives so I - personally - don't miss it!!!

But I understand the frustration and that some people do miss it...
