mattwritescode··on Is Sublime still alive?
I was asking myself the same question last week.

This link here will explain all that is going on with the development of sublime text as of july (2014).

http://www.sublimetext.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=16517

For those who are lazy and will not read the link here is some text taken from the page.

> Sublime Text is still in development. We haven't sold out to atom.io, Jon hasn't died, there has been no hostile takeover by TextWrangler. We dropped back down to one developer earlier this year, and because that developer is also the director of the company, speed of updates was sacrificed in exchange for business planning, applying for a new payment platform and a vacation. Being a bit of a perfectionist probably contributes to the dearth of feature adds.

> However, development is still active: when I spoke to Jon today he advised me that not only does he expect an update to the beta in August, he has also started mapping out some frameworks for version 4 which will help guide future development.

Just to give me options what other frameworks would you recommend? Are there any you would say to keep clear of.
mattwritescode··on Heroku REALLY screwed up today
If they schedule work out of hours they will need to pay staff over time which costs money. Much cheaper to inconvenience customers.
mattwritescode··on Ask HN: Which companies (or gov agencies) have the worst customer service?
why do that to yourself.

Use namecheap, or name at a minimum. There service is so much better.

mattwritescode··on Ask HN: Which tech conference would you attend?
Looks amazing, I want to go.

Shame I cannot afford it at the moment. *sigh

Djangocon is always on my hit list of tech events to go to.

mattwritescode··on Ask HN: is Nginx trusted?
I think you probably have to worry more about the general security of your servers. Its really quite easy to do something stupid which can leave you exposed.

Im sure the russians have better things to be doing rather than looking at you (no offence).

mattwritescode··on ASK PG: What is the next million dollar idea?
I know we have some of the ideas below but still. I want more of it.

Wireless! I dont want my computer, tv, games console having a load of cables trailing everywhere, How about a smartphone which pulls its power from the same antenna where it gets its signal.

Wireless power, wireless graphics, Wireless charging.

Whilst we are at it how about a phone which you could use wirelessly without it having to be plugged into the national infrastructure (we could call it a mobile phone).

mattwritescode··on Ask HN: I'm looking for new ways to serve museum visitors with content
In the past I have worked on a similar type of project but for a large trade show. After research we found these problems:

The problem with a straight QR code are that non technical people just have no idea what they are or how to use them (just ask your parents or friends).

NFC etc again have the same kind of issue. Non-technical people just dont know how it works (also the fact that only the higher end devices support it).

Personally I would go for one of the two following options after working on something similar.

You could look into an app for the museum. The app will have a QR code reader built in, but you can also offer geolocation. The important thing in this case is to advertise the app everywhere. Also give the museum free wifi so people can download the app.

Or look at an internal WiFi network which only servers your website. If you wanted to get a little more technical you could get the website to allow location (really only works on single floor buildings) to server items close to where you are.

Thats really interesting. Thanks for sharing! What proven options have you looked into?

The title of this post seems to be rather out of date.
mattwritescode··on Ask HN: Most productive OS for web developers?
Linux is my choice (more specifically ubuntu). I dont need the eye candy and prefer minimalism when working.

Ubuntu also gives me a powerful set of commands. Easy installations and I dont need to keep reaching for my mouse. Meaning I can keep over the keyboard to complete all the tasks I need to.

mattwritescode··on Do you use PaaS to run your web application?
And how does cost compare?
mattwritescode··on Ask HN: How did you pick your lawyer or law firm?
I have worked in two law firms so I will try to give you some insight.

When you first arrange to meet firm X or Y they will send you a couple of their partners. Trust me when I say you will probably never see these people again unless you try to leave the company you are going for.

At the initial meeting listen to all the information they have to say. Ask them about rates, any similar companies to you, what extras they have to offer (sometimes they will offer you massively reduced rates on other legal matters (moving home, wills, etc)).

After this meeting go away think about what they have said. If you liked the partner arrange meeting two. Arrange this in a local coffee shop. Say you are really interested in going with them but you would like to meet the persons handling your case load. Most firms will be more than happy to do this, (some will cringe).

At meeting two if the person there is not a junior case handler then know they have not sent the person handling your case load. Lawfirms (especially big ones) will not hand a small account to a partner or senior case handler. Again ask questions and see if you get a long with them.

After working in a law firm for a couple of years I can tell you there are two types of case handlers. People you will get along with (these people dont generally have there head up there arse) and people you wont (these people generally think they have the biggest go-nads in the room).

mattwritescode··on Ask HN: what do you listen to when you want to be productive?
If I am in the office at work and I need to get things done I have some over ear headphones which are really good at noise cancelling.

I will just sit there with them on listing to nothing. Its nice as it means people will not come over and bother me; also I do not hear others working.

mattwritescode··on Ask HN: Which desk lamp do you use?
A £3 one, seriously it a *%!#ing lamp whats there to discus just go out find one you like and buy it!
mattwritescode··on Keyboard DAS keyboard 4 vs CODE keyboard
Only from the sharp edges of my current keyboard, and the fact the keys are a little squished.
mattwritescode··on Ask HN: London based contractors, what's your day rate?
I haven't done much work recently but when I did Python / Django:

For digital agencies :£360 Bank: £600

mattwritescode··on Would you use java for your startup?
As it has been mentioned here. If you are efficient in one programming language or technology then use it. Your initial gains and knowledge will allow you to work faster and smarter at a time when time is at a premium.

I know of two people who started web based startups one java and the other PHP and asked the same question. Both ended up choosing a new technology and regretted the decision.

Learning a new technology isnt just about writing the code to get a working prototype or finished product as quickly and easily as possible. Its about the learning about the things that a particular programming language cannot do and its short comings.

mattwritescode··on Exec($_GET
Thats a little more than concerning!
mattwritescode··on Ask HN: Is Sublime Text abandonware?
I think if he no longer wants to support the project it should be open sourced. It would be a shame if the time comes and he doesnt want to do it any longer that the project is just lost.
mattwritescode··on Ask HN: What is the most difficult tech/dev challenge you ever solved?
I solved the travelling salesman problem in constant time but this margin is to small for me to write my answer.
mattwritescode··on Semi amusing development stories
Just remember it when you have some British clients.
mattwritescode··on Ask HN: Is Sublime Text dead?
Shame its not opensource then people could contribute more than just plugins!
