I'm with you brother , don't give into obsessive insecurity. Retrospect for the win , have faith . an hourly pulse does not help you predict a heart attack any better than a weekly sampling
This is true, investor and for that matter 'executive' lock-in is significantly more substantial than an individual contributor, and so (rightly so) is the investment to return. It's an interesting paradox. Reputation matters.
I couldn't agree more. Rent control originally proposed for these on fixed salary growth (teachers, firemen, etc.) is turned upside down when the inhabitants are not constrained by these caps. That being said the rules of the game are clear and defined on signing of the lease ( by both parties), and property owners are constrained (and game) these rules as much as the tenants. Having an updated provision that allows both parties to win from a conversion makes for amicable relations. I love my rent controlled apartment, but let's face the facts the contract and governance is clear and I could end up with the same situation. I would be more inclined to be bought out of my position giving up my under market rent giving the landlord the option to try for greater revenue. Win win
Absolutely , we shipped our first enterprise swift app at Elementum ( Manufacture

+1 on breaking out of a single “views” directory via a View Resolver. Coming from mobile dev app architecture I always found it awkward. Maybe this is more standard in web dev, but for iOS Android Mobile dev there is a much more module convention expectation on View/Controller organization
If my kid asked me what I thought about this article I would say. If you want to contribute to the world as it is today then sure join a great corp that's making an impact and go for it! If you want to change tomorrow then go find a few people that feel the same as you do and go for it! The idea that an individual can not make a corp the same way that others did is not true. 'kid if that's what you want to do then go for it! I did' is the only response. Don't let the critics and the propaganda define you and tell you what to do, the future is yours. go for it !
Now you have my attention - "Or Node embedded in a phone or network switch where it is performing routing logic for multiple connections, but in a single process and you’re not far off". I would be interested in seeing what the performance impact is on ARM architectures since the above are strong use cases.
A humble approach is always nice, its always challenging to give an earnest opinion ( after all that's why I read your content, for your opinions) and be openly modest. your (authors) terminology in differentiating programmers form coders is different from my own 'naming'. My wording are often around application development vs systems programming. a sys programmer writes software for humans to control machines ( databases, OS's,tools) where as an app developer is focused on software (computers) that controls humans ( apps that constructively shape human actions) . I liked the article , good post.
i love this quote ' can program our own contracts without any need for lawyers.' because contracts are very much like programs... but I still Don't think this article is correct. VC's bring so much more than just capitalization. Most people can't even decide which mutual fund to invest their 401k in much less which early start up to invest in.
i think reactive task (JavaScript style promise) paradigm's are great for the mobile interaction use case. small segmented operations that async update the ui. block style coding mechanism are also nice because you can see the callback code next to the invoke. very interesting . seems like combining this with an JavaScript runtime would be even more powerful
I like the Primary Constructor shorthand update. C# (and the CLR) is a great language. It has always been more verbose that I preferred. Its nice to see that updates that reduce the LOC count.
#protip if your going to leave your job, always do it the week before you go to SXSW. You will have fun, renew and make new friendships, get a wide perspective, likely walk away with a bunch of full-time or contract leads and have fun (its worth saying that twice).
AWS re:Invent was a really good one. I attended the 2012 and even got to speak, I missed the 2013. 2012 had good content and was well organized. I didn't make 2013 so not sure about this year.
True on proprietary. I don's know of any impactful use cases for ObjC. However there are some good things about this. The spec can move fast, focus on success in use cases, and also make it easy to conform to 'nice' HIG. In many cases it's nice to not have to worry about these things and just focus on the end app use case. In the end when it comes to iOS and OSX its still Steve Jobs word were just playing in it.
I would replace fear with pride and vanity. the behavior seems to be more about the anxiety of looking bad in front of your peers than evolving a business model or product. its unfortunate because smart people from past successes seem to be more afflicted than those with 'less to lose'
