mattmar96··on Show HN: I made an alarm clock
I like this idea
mattmar96··on MF DOOM Has Died
Huh, I always thought that sample was from the BART in the Bay Area. The two sound really familiar. Thanks for sharing, that’s my favorite track of his.
mattmar96··on Ableton Live 11
I know how that goes, best of luck!
mattmar96··on Ableton Live 11
Just had a lot of fun playing this! Thanks for sharing. I've been working on a wavetable synth VST, but also have been looking at web APIs to do something similar to this. Thanks for the write up.
mattmar96··on 5000mAh graphene powerbank can be fully recharged in under 20 minutes
I was amazed to see that it is already for sale. I expecting to see a prototype.
mattmar96··on Scientists rename human genes to stop MS Excel from misreading them as dates
If this kind of thing amuses you, check out the book Humble Pi by Matt Parker. Its a collection of stories about maths errors. Lo and behold, most of them happen in Excel.
mattmar96··on Ink 3 – Build CLI apps with React
Fantastic
mattmar96··on Spotify CEO: musicians can no longer release music only “once every 3-4 years”
I disagree. Name your price is the selling point. Effectively a donation option for your favorite small artists.
mattmar96··on Study finds learning music won’t make children smart
Good point. Glad to see they mentioned the prosocial bit. Didn't catch that.

Another benefit besides those you listed is teamwork. Playing together in a band, there is no way to "game the system". Everyone needs to learn their part to make the overall piece enjoyable. It proved to me at an early age that people can come together to create something greater than themselves.

From the original study: "-evidence indicates that engagement in music has no impact on people’s non-music cognitive skills".

My intuition says the evidence must not be comprehensive enough then.

mattmar96··on Appearances vs. Experiences: What Makes Us Happy
Same here. Not a huge fan of reading while standing packed like sardines.
mattmar96··on Apple Security Research Device Program
Enjoyed this
mattmar96··on Apple Music on Android requires its own payment details to avoid Google 30% cut
I think the initial analogy of discounts is flawed. Its more like

Let X be "It is okay for me (Costco owner) to require customers use CostCo credit cards only"

Let not X be "It is okay for me to use my non-Safeway credit card at Safeway"

mattmar96··on Apple, ARM, and Intel
I do some light VST development with JUCE and have tested out my synth on my iPad Pro, worked a charm.
mattmar96··on VS Code Development Using Docker Containers on Remote Host
https://tilt.dev/

We recently got this setup running company wide. It is a headache to iron out all the kinks, but the reproducibility is great.

Essentially each developer has their own Kubernetes cluster in the cloud. As you develop your code is r-sync'd across to the pod running the relevant compiler/server/etc.

Again, a bit of a pain to get running but really powerful once its setup. We now have near carbon-copy deployments across prod, dev, local development, and (soon) even the CI.

(I don't work for Tilt, just a fan of their product and vision)

mattmar96··on IBM Releases Fully Homomorphic Encryption Toolkit for macOS and iOS
I attended the event celebrating the solving of LCS35. LCS35 was a cryptographic challenge set by Ron Rivest (the R in RSA) in 1999. It was intended to be so difficult that only computers made 35 years in the future would be able to solve it.

The challenge was solved by Bernard Fabrot. It was fairly simple code on I believe an intel 4770K. The math libraries and CPU had been optimized so much in the ~20 years since the challenge was set that a consumer CPU could calculate the answer. The only catch is that it took months on end of calculation.

Reminds me of when people say 'you don't need fancy equipment to make music'. Sure, you don't _need_ it, but a new fancy synthesizer or guitar is investing in your own ability to make art. More than the instrument itself, knowing I made an investment in myself helps motivate me I think.
mattmar96··on Tech workers consider escaping Silicon Valley’s sky-high rents
Personally, I've been way _more_ productive during all of this. And before the pandemic, I was somewhat of an in-office advocate myself.
mattmar96··on We at $Famous_company switched to $Hyped_technology
Are you referring to typescript? If so, that’s hilarious
mattmar96··on Show HN: Canvas engines performance comparison – PixiJS, Two.js, and Paper.js
Yeah, I have basic culling implemented. Objects that are larger than, say, 3x their normal scale are not rendered. Likewise with those 1/100th their normal scale.
mattmar96··on Show HN: Canvas engines performance comparison – PixiJS, Two.js, and Paper.js
You can try it on a phone but its not designed for it. Theres a separate app version of it for mobile.

Phew, glad I picked Pixi.js for this then. I’m building the next version of Scale of the Universe

(For windows/mac/linux only btw)

mattmar96··on Show HN: Spatially aware group video calls from the browser
Great idea. I say that as a pat on my own back, given Ive been hacking on basically this exact same thing for the past few days.
mattmar96··on Companies fret as costs soar for software subscriptions (2019)
MatLab
mattmar96··on MSPaint in JavaScript
Im sure he does great work. Just pains me to picture this though, compared to what can be done with Figma or Adobe’s own XD.
mattmar96··on Time.gov was upgraded today
Interesting stuff. Surprised to see such tech literacy on the White House’s website.
mattmar96··on First Atari Hotel to Begin Construction in Phoenix in Mid-2020
Isn't the point of visiting a place to experience it? What's the point of flying/driving somewhere only to put on a VR headset when you arrive?
mattmar96··on Vine Relaunches as Byte
Well, we wouldn't be talking about Vine today at all if it weren't for that 7 second limit. Without it, why would anyone use it over Instagram, Twitter, etc?
mattmar96··on Drinking 1% rather than 2% milk accounts for 4.5 years of less aging in adults
My immediate thought is, those who grab the 1% milk at the grocery store are more likely to make other healthy decisions as well. Can anyone comment on whether the study adjusted for this?
mattmar96··on Older IT Workers Left Out Despite Tech Talent Shortage
This is the real answer, lol. Just wanted to vent. People in this thread are treating me like I'm a shithead listing a position with impossible requirements and terrible pay.

I'm not. I'm an engineer on the team and I wrote my comment (passive-aggressively) because my workload is ridiculous. As I understand it, we're having a very difficult time finding people.
