matthias··on Dallas data center raided by the FBI based on false claims by former employee
At FOWA Edinburgh, Stefan Magdalinski mentioned that MOO had moved their hosting to the US (from the UK) in order to improve google rankings. I guess you can't have your cake and eat it.
matthias··on [dead]
At a guess this would be largely explained by usage of facebook "networks" not mapping to population. For example, 1. choosing a nearby big city as your network when you live rurally or 2. setting your network as where you go to school.
matthias··on Hacker News Startups: Listing/Wiki of startups founded by HNers (not just YC)
Very useful. Could you add a field for input of HN threads pertaining to each startup?
matthias··on IE6 Upgrade Warning
From the title/domain, I thought that the upg warning was from google. Is there a solution to this problem? Would adding cases such as code.google.com be worthwhile?
matthias··on Ask HN: Does the UK need a YC clone?
sorry didn't realise the email field was hidden from other users. cheers i'll send you a message :)
matthias··on Ask HN: Does the UK need a YC clone?
hi jlees, glasgow hn-er here. would love to chat - email is in profile.
matthias··on The Word "Hacker" (2004)
"Hacker" may very well be (helpfully) keeping the size of HN down. The last time I sent someone a link to an HN discussion they took one look at the url and phoned to tell me that my email had a virus.
matthias··on Ask HN: feedback on The Great Movie Experiment - an alternative to IMDB star ratings.
The (wonderful) traffic helped us identify a bottleneck in the code. It's working again now but it's a home server so wish us luck!
matthias··on Ask HN: feedback on The Great Movie Experiment - an alternative to IMDB star ratings.
It's running from the server in the attic just now so it won't be as snappy as possible! Our intention would be to put the images on a CDN at some point. In the meantime, would a loading spinner on the graphics avoid confusion with the title text?
matthias··on Ask HN: feedback on The Great Movie Experiment - an alternative to IMDB star ratings.
Hi everyone, I would very much appreciate your feedback on a new site. The gist is that we're compiling a list of movies based on head to head votes, as an alternative to imdb star ratings.

The format is 1000 movies facing off in a round-robin tournament (~500k votes per round). We needed a non-arbitrary sample of movies to vote on, so we've started with a list of the Top 1000 US box-office takings. Each round, the bottom 50 will be culled to make room for the top 50 in the Up & Coming.

We're working on... 1. an 'add movie' page, allowing you to add any movie to the up&coming 2. member pages showing your own votes & reccomendations, 3. actor pages, ranking the movies people have been in by popularity.

Monetising... 1. netflix add-to-queue buttons, 2. amazon links (the site is great at reminding you of things you want to see), and feasibly 3. targetted advertising (ie. only show this ad to people who have voted for romcoms).

matthias··on Facebook founder finds a way to profit from its members' private data
Overall, I can't help but think that their time would be better spent working on a premium consumer offering.
matthias··on People count money differently in different parts of the world [video]
I tried to remember how I count them, then realised that I've never had a wad of bills.
matthias··on 'Immortal' jellyfish swarming across the world
I'm hoping that it is one of his aquariums in the film Seven Pounds, and that he tells people "I do all Will Smith's jellyfish work".
matthias··on Ask HN: Has anyone ever gotten funding from this website?
The live activity monitor is pretty nifty.
matthias··on Pipl.com: people search so good it will scare your pants off

matthias··on Adobe Air surpasses 100 Million installations
Firefox is at 800 million, but I'd say at least 40 of those were me!
matthias··on Ask HN: What do these startups need so much money for?
That outlay is fine if you're a year into trading and are showing signs of being top 1% successful. However, many of these huge sums that are raised pre-launch or pre-build just seem like madness and I can't see it continuing.

The yc vision seems more sustainable: $5k+$5kpf = you build something. If it's good you get to raise a couple hundred k to turn it into a company. If at that point it looks like you might be google, then raise the millions that you need.

matthias··on Ask HN: What do these startups need so much money for?
The barrier to entry has toppled by an order of magnitude and the market is slow to adapt to such changes.
matthias··on Poll: Startups, why do them?
For that niggling little feeling that you just might be onto something. Where apprehension clashes with excitement and the rush of it buries the worry that is sinking to the pit of your stomach. And you know the odds, and you know the stake: you place a bet on yourself.
matthias··on Ask HN: Is there room for another photo sharing service?
flickr etc = images + community... so go create images + technology.

that photo stuff we hear about from time to time, like face recognition or stitching together photos or turning them into videos or building 3d models of landmarks from tons of user photos... are any of those on photo sharing site yet?

matthias··on Ask HN: Why do Amazon gift cards sell for more than face value?
It's due to a Microsoft cashback programme that rewards users for locating ebay items using Live search.

matthias··on Ask HN: iPhones are mundane. What's the new grail?
the floppy dot. it just floats: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=JILWKaQgUC0
matthias··on Ask HN: How do you handle/manage/record requirements?
1. Open up requirements from the last project. 2. Rejig them a bit. 3. Send them off and get back to building things.

...we also use backpack

matthias··on Wikipedia considers limiting user edits
I think Wikipedia is facing a myth vs. reality problem: the idea of an freely editable encyclopaedia is wonderful, but in the end a closed & moderated system might prove more useful.
matthias··on What is startup.tv worth?
Why don't you package all three as an investment vehicle and sell bonds right here on hn? Since it was my idea, I choose to rate them AAA.
matthias··on Review my app: Head Hunting lets you post jobs to your facebook profile
I've been job-spammed a few times by recruiters on Facebook, ie:

"I am also in the Scottish Developers group, I work for 9-20 recruitment, an IT specialist recruitment consultancy based in Glasgow. One of my clients in Edinburgh is looking for a .NET developer for an urgent start - just wondering if you are available or know anybody who is?"

I've sent them a link to your app and a polite request not to message me again.

And on the other hand, when I pay £5 for half an hour on your wi-fi, can you please grant me an aura that protects me from the dirty looks only a laptop and an empty coffee cup can bring?
matthias··on Facebook screws iFart author
Possible fix: institute a "real" friend limit that is reasonably low. If a user has reached the limit, subsequent requestees are automatically added to a fan page. Allow the user to swap people between the two. Facebook's fan pages, updates etc keep a good balance between marketing & spam... this would enforce the use of them.
matthias··on Facebook screws iFart author
Perhaps there would be mileage in an app (or browser plugin or Evernote mashup etc) that created backups of your Facebook data in some way.

Impetus / further example: A friend of mine took the decision to remove himself from social networks for privacy reasons. While I respect his decision and motivation, the loss of comments on our holiday photos from his albums was a real shame.

Further application: 1. Access to historical data/ versioning of your own and others pages (ahem, all sorts privacy issues there). 2. Those popular map-the-people-i-know graphics could be created as videos showing growth over time. 3. Generating a Lulu book from the collected data (I think we all know at least one Facebook addict who would love this).

Of course the irony is that Facebook would likely have ban you for using anything that mined your account at any sort of interval. To avoid suspicion it would need to be "watching" (or mimicking) your regular access and saving the juicy bits rather than logging in for you and crawling.
