matthias509··on Don’t format a drive of M1 Macs from recovery mode
Your statement regarding the lack of deterrence does not match reality. See https://transition.fcc.gov/bureaus/oet/tac/tacdocs/meeting12...

"Similar to New York City, San Francisco also provides evidence that mobile device theft prevention technologies work. In 2009, Apple smartphones constituted the vast majority (69%) of smartphones stolen in San Francisco robberies; in the six months after Apple made Activation Lock available, iPhone robberies in San Francisco declined 38%."

I used to work on public safety radio systems. Things which seem like minor issues like clipping the beginning of a transmission every now and then are showstopper defects in that space.

It’s because it can be the difference between “Shoot” and “Don’t shoot.”

matthias509··on Zuckerberg wants to 'inflict pain' on Apple for privacy changes
We should always remember what is being sold and who the customers are. Apple sells iPhones to consumers. Facebook sells our attention to businesses.

Both companies are trying to sell more of their product.

Of these two I am much more concerned about Facebook because I have much less control over the transaction.

matthias509··on When Amazon Switched from Sun to Linux
By default yes, though I worked on a codebase which was ported from M68k to SPARC which had a lot of misaligned memory access. You could opt into having "packed" structs with #pragma pack and avoid the runtime error by compiling all the code with --misalign.

As I recall, this had a performance penalty since memory reads/writes are now byte-by-byte. Also it could make code which assumed atomic reads/writes of 32 bit quantities go awry.

matthias509··on What I’ve Learned in 45 Years in the Software Industry
> For many people, doing something unique is far more satisfying than dealing with people problems.

These are not mutually exclusive. If you want to accomplish big unique things, you can't do it yourself. You are going to have to convince others that your big new idea is worth doing so that they will help you achieve it.

matthias509··on When free software isn't practically superior (2015)
Exactly, I use my free will to exchange money for an experience with less hassle and thus get back time which I can spend on other pursuits.
matthias509··on Death by 1000 layers: the perils of over-abstraction in Java (2017)
I’ve seen this over and over. The engineer building the mock is the same that wrote the code, so the same incorrect assumptions get baked into both.

This is what makes mocks of limited utility. In the end, they don’t prove the code works and they are expensive to create and maintain.

matthias509··on AT&T Fiber in the SF Bay Area is flipping bits
I cope with level 1 support by remembering we have a common goal: to stop talking to each other as quickly as possible. The tech just wants to close the case and I want to talk to someone else who can actually help me.
matthias509··on Why did renewables become so cheap so fast?
Maybe use excess electricity to produce hydrogen using electrolysis and then burn it in a turbine later?
