matthews2··on Speed Up C++ Compilation
Try avoiding the standard library. Some headers like type_traits are so large and complex it can add a few hundred milliseconds onto each CU that ends up including it.
matthews2··on Systemd 254 released, deprecating sysvinit scripts
Many of the systemd components are separate and optional. You can easily eschew from systemd-timesyncd and systemd-resolved, for example.
matthews2··on Systemd 254 released, deprecating sysvinit scripts
It has a very good manual. Lennart's blog also has a series named systemd for Administrators: https://0pointer.de/blog/projects/systemd-for-admins-1.html
matthews2··on How I run my servers (2022)
> In order to provide isolation, I run each service as its own unix user account.

systemd's DynamicUser feature could save some time here. It can allocate a uid, then create directories for logs/state with the correct permissions.

You're not at work though, this is someone's personal project that they built for their own enjoyment.
matthews2··on Red Hat cutting back RHEL source availability
The GPL says I must give you access to the source along with the binaries, but it doesn't say I need to give you updates indefinitely.

Given the partial IP address and request time, the ISP could identify the customer.
matthews2··on UK airport scraps 100ml liquid rule with new scanners
You can keep a few rolls in a clear plastic bag and ask for them to be hand checked separately.
matthews2··on Namecheap is buying and holding onto domains you're interested in?
After buying dozens of domains via Namecheap, I've never lost a domain to front-running. Maybe they know that all of my ideas are worthless...
matthews2··on Iceland long term visa for remote workers
> You can stay 90 days on a visitor visa and just leave for a weekend every 90 days and start the clock over.

In what country is this the case? For countries in the Schengen area, the rule is 90 days out of any 180 day period.

matthews2··on PayPal has restricted our account after we invoiced a key containing “ALEP”
The real bank that I use in the UK cares about what you put in the reference field. Putting something like "AK47" as the reference quickly results in a phone call from them telling you to not do that.
matthews2··on ChatGPT Users Data Leaked
> a bug in an open source library

A bug in some code that we took for free and didn't review.

matthews2··on Made a Flappy Bird clone with GPT4 and Midjourney in under an hour
I don't think that this is ChatGPT or the user's error, the Unity docs consistently refer to them as scripts:

https://docs.unity3d.com/Manual/Glossary.html#Scripts

matthews2··on Who is still inside the metaverse?
We need a cops and robbers game where the robbers serve their prison sentence in real time, and the cops have to fill in mountains of paperwork for every shot fired :)
matthews2··on Verilog Ethernet: Work-in-Progress 100BASE-TX PHY
The PHY (physical layer) turns the boring digital signals from our microcontroller into exciting analogue/RF signals.
matthews2··on Ask HN: How do you start over with 2FA after losing your phone?
> if I select only one entry the QR code gets smaller in itself

Does it block you from taking a screenshot? Maybe you could screenshot it and then zoom in the gallery app.

matthews2··on Hi again @elonmusk
Probably the Tweet the OP is replying to.

matthews2··on KDE and GNOME seeks $100k to turn Flathub into a Store for the Linux desktop
Testing isn't rolling release. Every 2 years, testing becomes stable, and stable becomes oldstable.
matthews2··on Rust – What made it “click” for me (Ownership and memory internals)
If you are writing C or C++ and aren't thinking about ownership and lifetimes, you have either statically allocated everything or you are doing it wrong.
matthews2··on Setting up an electronics workshop
> extract fumes from your workspace

If you're just doing a little bit of rework or tacking on bodge wires, I think the small fans are enough just to get the fumes out of your face.
