matth··on Ask YC: Hacker moms & dads, what do you read?
I was spanked something like 4 or 5 times by my father, and I agree with your action->consequence statements. I made sure to pass on lessons learned to my little brother and sister as well.

My dad and I have been laughing about it for a long time now. I think my sister was only spanked 2 or 3 times. The last time any us of were spanked happened when my she wet her pants in Dad's lap. We laugh a lot about it, actually.

matth··on Ask YC: What software makes you happy?
I agree with you!

However, I'll add the caveat that things tend to get a little crazy around YC application deadlines. My feeling is that some people seem to feel the need to 'fall in line' around that time.

matth··on Ask YC: What software makes you happy?
> If someone gets riposted for their comments they ought to ask themselves, what am I doing wrong? Not, what's wrong with the community.

Have you ever seen THX 1138? It's a good movie.

In all seriousness... lets try to admit there are problems here. I lurk more than I post for simple fear of bothering someone's sensibilities. In fact, when I do post, I tend to generalize so I don't lose half my karma.

matth··on We launched: massify.com
Just a heads up: Ghosts in the Machine is used in the header, but the end of the video reads Ghost in the Machine. No 's'. Not sure which version you were going for, but you might want to read through and double check all that.
matth··on David Lynch on iPhone
Off-topic, but a little humor for us all.
matth··on Mac owners 3x more likely than PC owners to have recently paid for a music download
Anecdotal evidence suggests a high correlation between the number of suckers born every minute and Mac users.

That said; I want a MacBook Pro. ;-)

matth··on Ask news.yc: Name your startups of the year
I had never heard of Songza. I just tried it out and it's pretty amazing. I agree with the red being a poor choice for a background, but everything else I think is pretty spot on.

Searching while listening to music is great, I like it.

matth··on Anti-intellectualism in American Culture
I don't see how you can be hostile toward an institution that exists to advance education

More accurately: exists with the intent to advance education. And this is where your argument falls apart.

matth··on Anti-intellectualism in American Culture
aswanson said it very well. Criticism of college does not equate to anti-intellectualism.

The "real world" isn't exactly known for a lack of bullshit; dealing with it (i.e. having discipline and tenacity) is as marketable a skill as knowing how to code.

A number of us here are young, ambitious, and have grand visions for "changing the world." Our only reasons for obedience to the university system is to achieve our goals. I call bullshit on the world. I want to change the world, not adapt to it. But cheers to you mate.

matth··on When are YC Summer 2008 Applications open?
I think they should replace their blood with caffeine. That's just me.

Honestly, I have to imagine two sessions a year are already pretty rough.

matth··on Silly code comments you've left to yourself
My computer also doesn't care if I put a space between each concatenation operator, but I do. :)
matth··on Ask YC: Suggestions for Loved One's Dementia/Alzheimer's
I used to write a daily Alzheimer's newsletter for a small home-business based in Cummings, GA. Part of my job was to cover upcoming research studies, recent findings, and that sort of thing.

Music therapy seems to be developing as a respected treatment method. Anything that promotes a patient's creativity is highly recommended.

I can remember covering at least one positive story every week about Omega-3 and/or antioxidants.

Other than that keep your ear to the ground for upcoming research studies looking for participants.

I've been up for a couple days or something, so I'm losing my coherence here. E-mail me and I can put you in touch with some really good people who are more up-to-date on current progresses in the field than I am. They keep normal sleep hours, too.

matth··on Clinton E. Curtis, programmer, testifies to Congress about fradulent voting machine source code
Realistically, there isn't going to be a paper trail in November, or in the foreseeable future for that matter.

At the risk of getting "too" political, I believe there's a contingent of Paul supporters who don't seem so... umm... ethically inclined. A goofy thing to say about the world of politics, no doubt. But combine that lack of ethics with technological ability...

matth··on Clinton E. Curtis, programmer, testifies to Congress about fradulent voting machine source code
I would assume this is partly because many of us have been upset with electronic voting machines since day one. Machines without paper trails are scary, and there's not much more for the hackers here to say.

What's odd is that, seemingly, so few non-hackers are scared of the implications of these machines.

Here's a scary combo: Ron Paul's tech savvy followers + no paper trails.

matth··on Saul Griffith on winning a MacArthur, entrepreneurship, and dumpster diving
I wouldn't necessarily say that. I think the process for awarding them is bogus.

But I do hope the the origami idea is just part of his plans.

matth··on Ask YC: Should Fridays and Saturday nights matter to a young hacker?
All pretty good advice. However, if you find yourself out with friends and almost all you do is think about your project, work on your project. My girlfriend was dragging me out to parties, weddings, her family's house, etc. All I did was think about my project.

We've since separated. Things are working out far better now for my programming schedule. Unfortunately, no more sex.

Socialize, but not for the sake of it. Also, some people are for the late nights, some aren't. Just remember to keep tabs on your health. And I mean that more in the mental sense.

matth··on Ask news.YC: what are you listening to right now?
The Kinks - This Time Tomorrow
matth··on Ask news.YC: what are you listening to right now?
The entire soundtrack to The Fountain is pure excellence. The Last Man is my favorite track off that album, after Death is the Road to Awe. Very haunting and beautiful.
matth··on What's the holdup on your startup?
Haha, Internet Explorer quirks. Almost done actually, doing some touch-ups here and there, and then launching an invite only beta early January.
matth··on Mean-spirited Valleywag gossip on iminlikewithyou (interesting tidbit about YC interview)
Not true.
matth··on Google announces Open Handset Alliance - Techcrunch
The idea may have been to buy Dodgeball to prevent competition, and/or to get in on any collaborations or partnerships DB had.
matth··on Ask YC: For the hackers, what's your favorite part of development?
Not at all vain. Perhaps this is a more accurate refinement of what I enjoy about refactoring: progress. There really is an undeniability to constant and measured progress of programming as a whole. ie - Two minutes ago this wasn't possible, now it is. Constant gratification.
matth··on [dead]
If reddit hears about this, it's over. Not really, but I'd rather HN itself not hit any social news site. We'll have to build a new community. In general, I think it's fair to say many of us jumped from /. to digg, to reddit, and then here. Of course, each community has it's own flavor - and not to be a pretentious jerk - but it's hard to beat the flavor during the outset.
matth··on [dead]
Whether it's true or not, this is going to get interesting very quickly.
matth··on Ask YC news: are you supposed to get a karma point for submitting a link?
If you simply received a karma point for making a submission or a comment, then I imagine we'd receive quite a bit more spam. Instead, we're all put on the spot to make valid contributions. This is great, however, there isn't really a forum for users to dispute the lack of merit when downmodding occurs. As far as I'm aware, no web community has that sort of democratic judicial arena for disputes, and it would be nice. Something to think about...
matth··on Our YC Interview Demo - we just launched it
Cool. I didn't expect you to be able to say much at this point. I wish you luck, and keep us updated.
matth··on Our YC Interview Demo - we just launched it
Note: This is going to come across crappy, but please don't take it that way. I'm actually curious.

Care to share anymore of your ultimate goal? From the outset, I don't see anything too compelling, and I didn't really expect YC to jump on the Facebook App train. Is there more to it that you're holding back on for now?

matth··on Our YC Interview Demo - we just launched it
You applied to YC, or got the interview?
matth··on Ask YC: How did you come up with your startup idea?
A. I really wanted something and built it. I found out other people liked it and wanted it. I've been developing based on feedback and my larger plan.
matth··on Amazing chat bot developed by a startup claiming to have made a significant AI breakthrough (vid)
That was altogether pretty lame. Having done some NLP and chatterbot development in the past, I don't see anything here out of the ordinary. In fact, it seems as though they're just trying to impress folks who don't know any better.

People like them (Cognitive Code) give AI research a bad name. As always, put up or shutup.
