matt_the_bass··on Ray Ozzie's latest venture is a cheap IoT board with flat rate connectivity
Particle seems to offer more options and products other than just cellular. But if just looking at the cellular options, my understanding is that both offer an inexpensive, one time fee dev board/module solution for IoT with data.

Looks cool! How does this differ from http://particle.io ?
matt_the_bass··on Ask HN: Any Experience with Online Master's in Electrical/Computer Engineering?
I’m curious how the hardware labs would be done. Do you purchase all the gear for your own home electronics lab?
matt_the_bass··on Ask HN: How do you make money on the side?
I like to monetize my hobby. I make fancy work clocks and sell some occasionally. I don’t feel pressured to sell since I like the hobby. But I also like to sell one now and again. Plus it’s a big ego booster.
matt_the_bass··on Twike
I agree with many of your points. One not though, in the state where I live, we have awful drivers (I think) and covid deaths in 2020 were ~100x average yearly motor vehicle deaths.
matt_the_bass··on Health insurers are threatening not to cover some patients’ ER bills
Yeah I had a similar experience with a secondary infection 11 days after a lion fish sting. I went to my primary care DR as a “sick visit”. After evaluation he said to go to the ER. Since I needed treatment sooner than a schedule procedure could be scheduled, the only option was ER even though I could have waited a day or two. It seems like something between the two would be valuable.

At least I had an uncommon condition so nearly every dr and resident on duty came by to check it out. I didn’t get forgotten in the crowd and had some nice chats while waiting for a slot in the imaging schedule.

matt_the_bass··on Shortage of air conditioner parts expected this summer
This works great for me in NE USA. We have two large filters. Usually keep one upstairs and one downstairs. They make a noticeable difference. But they were about $250 each.
matt_the_bass··on Ask HN: How much electricity can be harvested from water coming to a house?
Thanks for doing the math
matt_the_bass··on Ask HN: What activities help you recharge?
Scuba diving. When you’re underwater, you have to leave all thoughts about the surface at the surface.

Logging off is important any way you do it.

matt_the_bass··on Ask HN: What have been the hardest work-related aspects of async/remote work?
> - Oh! and last but not least, the fact that the last year+ has not been what Remote / Remote-Hybrid work should look like. It's WFH during a pandemic, yah?

This! I wish I had a more constructive comment. But people forget that remote / hybrid should not mean working and childcare simultaneously or massive society stress while working.

matt_the_bass··on Ask HN: Laptop Stand with Space for Keyboard?
Will do!
matt_the_bass··on Ask HN: Would you pay for Hacker News?
I used to pay for it back when it was printed and came in the mail.
matt_the_bass··on Ask HN: Laptop Stand with Space for Keyboard?
How high do you want? I’ve been sketching out an idea for a monitor stand that could be adapted for this. Would be made from plywood, press fit together and flat packable.
matt_the_bass··on Can you become a firmware engineer(embedded software engineer) through bootcamp?
If I could only afford one, I would recommend the o-scope. Most firmware runs on bespoke hardware and the programmer can’t assume the hardware is abstracted away from the software. MANY bugs I’ve tracked down required electronics probing.
matt_the_bass··on Curt Schilling’s $150M Fail Shows What’s Broken in Video Games
I live in RI. State funding of this was (in my and many people’s opinions) an awful decision. RI has a long history of making bad economic decisions that are or at least appear to be corrupt.

I can’t speak to the quality/promise of the game. But who would think that a baseball start would be effective running a tech company?

Useless fun fact: after the auction of their assets, there was a lot of left overs in their office space that was all going to be trashed. I had a connection to the contractor and they let us take whatever we wanted. It saved them labor and disposal costs. We took a bunch of fantastic whiteboards. And the cabinets in my office’s kitchen came from there too.

matt_the_bass··on Ask HN: What have you recently been wrong about?
I picked my first asparagus of the season today. 1 spear split 4 ways at breakfast. :)
matt_the_bass··on Show HN: I built a tool to generate triangulated art from images
Nice idea! I’ve been making low poly images manually for vinyl cutter projects with the kids. I might try the same!
matt_the_bass··on Boris Johnson cancels India trip amid rising cases
Compared to what? That’s shorter than many voting lines in last US election. Shorter than waiting for an unscheduled bus in many countries. I agree it’s longer than I’d like but it’s all perspective.
matt_the_bass··on Suez canal blocked by a massive ship
Very rough water around the cape of good hope. Comparatively calm water through the Suez and Med.
matt_the_bass··on Cricut Wants Users to Pay for Unlimited Use of Cutting Machines They Already Own
Though depending upon your tolerance requirements, you could manually align your cuts to a registration mark assuming your material was inserted squarely.
matt_the_bass··on Cricut Wants Users to Pay for Unlimited Use of Cutting Machines They Already Own
Mine does not. I think you would need to step up a level from the MH series with US Cutter. I seem to recollect that was about $100-$150 more for that capability. But check their website.
matt_the_bass··on Cricut Wants Users to Pay for Unlimited Use of Cutting Machines They Already Own
Yup. Good catch!
matt_the_bass··on Cricut Wants Users to Pay for Unlimited Use of Cutting Machines They Already Own
Sorry. Should have been fab lab
matt_the_bass··on Ask HN: What do you think people will do with their stimulus checks?
I love my waterproof (brand) dry suit. I recently bought a waterproof wet suit too that’s awesome.
matt_the_bass··on Cricut Wants Users to Pay for Unlimited Use of Cutting Machines They Already Own
I have extensive experience with a nice Roland at a local Fabian. And I recently bought an MH series for home projects with the kids. I’m pleasantly surprised how good the MH is for the money! Assuming $20/birthday present, the machine will easily pay for itself in a year of gift making. Plus I get the kids to help make their friends gifts unique rather than buying something from a store. That is priceless to me!
matt_the_bass··on Ask HN: What is the worst product you still use?
Quickbooks!
matt_the_bass··on Ask HN: Favorite Music to Program To?
My go to is Club D’Elf. 1/2 morrocan trance 1/2 jam band with an impressive lineup of guests. Hundreds of live shows with professional level recordings on archive.org.
matt_the_bass··on Ask HN: How many of you have “repost” on HN?
I believe Dang sent me an email notifying me that he manually put it in that queue.
matt_the_bass··on Ask HN: How many of you have “repost” on HN?
I posted once with little traction and Dang put my post in some sort of 2nd chance queue since I thought it deserved more traction.

dang does a lot of work to curate this site. Thanks Dang!

matt_the_bass··on Ask HN: What's a side project you built to make money that hasn't?
I think your 1U rack unit would still be something a lot of gigging musicians would want. You could probably add in a few other things to that space too.
